Alright, I have two options:
SPS Tactical for around $570, swap out the stock.
Police for around $850, and keep it bone-stock.

Which would you do? If I got a stock for the SPS Tac, it would most likely be a B&C.

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

Depends, if you are also looking to swap out the barrel I would tell you to just by an action and build it the way you want it.

If not, I would look for the cheapest SPS-V or T you can find and order a DBM and inletted stock for it. Bed it, Krylon it, and spend the rest on Ammo and Optics.

Don't rule out Savage either if you are doing this on a budget.

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

I would not like to swap the barrel.

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

i just went through this same decision process.

i bought the 700p. i like the hs stock it comes with and most say that hs stocks are a bit nicer than the b&c. if you've handleda b&c and it fits well, you may want to go that route. it's just me, but i also prefer the park'd finish of the police vs. the matte blue on the sps. it'll be a while before i cerakote it so the park'd was a plus in my book, but i think that's splitting hairs.

they both end up about the same money once you re-stock the sps, so it pretty much comes down to which stock you prefer, the hs or the b&c offerings.

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

If you plan on the 1:12 twist 308

option 3

Buy the SPS-V (currently on sale everywhere) for $499, then $50 rebate from remmy. Get it chopped to your desired length, buy a takeoff stock here on the hide.

The SPS-V and the 700P have the same barreled action

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

Do you like the fit of the police stock? I shoot well with them but some don't like them at all.

If you dig the stock on the 700p, go for it.

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

750 seems a little high for the SPS tactical. You should be able to find one for around 600 bucks.

Nope, it says $570 not $750. I can see how you got that mixed up though...the two numbers look very similar!

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

So the 700P and SPS-V have the same barreled action, but the SPS-V isn't free floating because of the stock they have on it? And if I put on a new stock, the barrel will be free floating?

Thanks again for the help guys

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

You are correct, the SPS-V stock is pressure bedded with a little pad at the end of the stock. The stock itself is a pretty much hollow stock. Just enough stock to be effective. IMHO it works better than the hogue stock. Just that you will get barrel stringing after a few shots.

The good thing is it leaves you enough money in your budget to get the stock you really want. The B&C, HS, stocks are formed to free float the barrel. Your receiver only makes contact with the aluminum bedding block.

On another note, if you search enough , you may be able to find the LTR varmint, or they may call it SPS light tactical. A fluted ltr barreled action in the varmint stock.

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

If you decide on the sps tact and down the road think you will want the barrel threaded to fit a break or can, the sps tact aac-sd might be an option. It could end saving you a little money.

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

Wow, so the extra $300 you pay for the 700P is basically just buying you a stock. With that in mind, I will probably just purchase a 700 SPS-V and put a B&C on it.

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

Where can you get a 700P at that price. I have been searching for my 1st bolt gun.

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

I got an SPS AAC version, .308 w/ 1:10 twist from Buds for $615. I then sold the the Hogue stock on Ebay for $120. You're not going to sell that thing here for $120 because these boys know better, but Ebay was no problem. So $495 is a very good price for your first bolt gun. I apologize if you mentioned you're only looking for a 1:12 twist but I'm sure the same can be done with either or.

Also, there has been some backlash against Buds recently for people waiting a while to get their gun so I'd recommend using a credit card, that way you can always do a charge back

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

must better choices out there in that price range....look into howa, stevens, savage, tikka......you'll end up with a much better action that's less susceptible to quality issues, like the 700 has been plagued with over the past few years.

not good choices if he plans to upgrade/customize in the future. rem 700's are like jeeps, parts everywhere by everyone. other actions not so much.

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

^^^^^^ Stick with a version of the 700 SPS for your first gun. All those of rifles are right around the same price. You get what you pay for. There are so many extras for the 700 action it will blow your mind. Plus there are a ton of quality take offs people on here are selling everyday.
I havent heard of anyone having major issues with a 700 SPS for sometime. If you do, send it back and make them fix it. I dont think you will have any complaints.
Keep your eye open on here. You might come across one thats already a shooter at a better price than it will cost you to build.

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

Would you guys say the 26" barreled actions is more accurate than the 20" barreled action that comes with the Tactical?

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

You're getting into velocity differences first off which at less than 800yds a 20" barrel is known to be plenty capable. I personally have a 700P with a 26" barrel because I like the extra little velocity plus I don't mind hauling around the extra weight. I'm getting ready to sell my rifle though because where I have moved to the farthest distance at any range in the area is 200yds which is pointless and boring.

the whole point of a BETTER action is to avoid a lot of the hassle of HAVING to have the action trued/upgraded.

tikka's come custom-action-smooth from the factory
savage has a floating bolt face so no truing is necessary
stevens is the same as savage
howa comes with better QC and a factory Sako extractor

stepping down to a rem700 just isn't as good of a choice as it was many years ago... for the price of a rem action, that's been trued, you're getting close to a custom action price...

adn beyond that, you can get the savage and how action as a BARE action from the factory...

the stevens is cheap enough that you can buy the whole gun and toss the extras

and as for other upgrades....stocks/bases/barrels...they're just as easy to get for other actions as they are for the rem700

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

From what I have read, the Savage bolt head will adjust for minor out of true problems but not large ones.

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

I'd get the SPS.

I got a SPS-Tac and dropped it in a manners T2A. Could not be happier.

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

My 700 SPS V shoots as well as my buddy's 700 tactical, but I also prefer the extra muzzle weight. You'll never go wrong with a 700.

also has a better metal finish, with the crappy finish on the SPS you will be getting rust spots

on either you will need to change the trigger, the X mark is not worth the grief

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

Unless you absolutely want the HS stock, I wouldn't go with the 700P.

The SPS-V would probably be the best value from the start and still give you the option of whatever stock fits you the best. SPS-Tactical would be next if you didn't want the extra barrel length. You could sell whichever stock they come with on Ebay for a pretty decent amount and use those funds plus what you saved over the 700P to fund the stock of your choice.

Wipe a bit of CLP on the finish of the SPS and will be fine. It's get's a little humid here in GA and I haven't ran into any rusting problems yet (knock on wood...)

Enjoy whatever you decide on.

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

Currently having my first bolt gun built off of a Remington 700 action by APA. We decided that this was the route to go for my first gun. Tons of available parts. Bought a 1980 model 30-06 with a "pre-lawyered" trigger and am having it converted to 280 AI. Either way, good luck with your new toy

Re: Remington 700 Opinions

I'm was considering those same options; but i'm going SPS...a lot of my buddies who frequent my local range who are hitting things beyond 500 yards are all recommending the stock 700 action and barrel and to just get a used stock/chassis and good optics. Reading all the replies here has definitely reaffirmed that recommendation. Time to shop for an SPS.
