not good choices if he plans to upgrade/customize in the future. rem 700's are like jeeps, parts everywhere by everyone. other actions not so much. </div></div>
the whole point of a BETTER action is to avoid a lot of the hassle of HAVING to have the action trued/upgraded.
tikka's come custom-action-smooth from the factory
savage has a floating bolt face so no truing is necessary
stevens is the same as savage
howa comes with better QC and a factory Sako extractor
stepping down to a rem700 just isn't as good of a choice as it was many years ago... for the price of a rem action, that's been trued, you're getting close to a custom action price...
adn beyond that, you can get the savage and how action as a BARE action from the factory...
the stevens is cheap enough that you can buy the whole gun and toss the extras
and as for other upgrades....stocks/bases/barrels...they're just as easy to get for other actions as they are for the rem700
