Game hunting where Im at has crapped out over the years and coyote's and lions are taking over. Never officially went out for coyotes so I need a call. My dad wants to chip in on a good call we can use and add onto as well so I figured we will skip the hand/mouth calls and grab something electronic with a remote. My budget for the call and hopefully a decoy is about $450.... Been leaning towards a foxpro system but theres so many damn options Im not sure where my money would be best spent.

I suggest you send a pm to skinney and chat him up about foxpros.. You cant go wrong with that system and he can help you get exaclty what your looking for..

He's the guy i turn to for all my coyote hunting questions. Great guy to work with.

Re: Need coyote equipment help

thanks for the reference Semmens!!!
this forum is great, but there is alot of like minded (in the sense of predator hunting) over @ predatormasterforums.com
we need to know where your from, what type of scenarios and landscapes you hunt, ie. wide open places will require more distance for the sound to travel, if your gonna be calling woods and thick cover, no need to spend the xtra $$$ on an expensive piece such as the prairie blaster or krakatoa, when you could be running something smaller like the firestorm or spitfire.

Re: Need coyote equipment help

Look at the Foxpro Spitfire...$199.99.

Great remote, electronic game call.

Either way, Foxpros are fantastic!!

Re: Need coyote equipment help

Whatever you get, make sure its the most expensive system on the market.

Hand calls wont work.

Youll need at least a $400 electronic, and the bigger the better. Even if you miss, you can at least make their ears bleed.

Might as well just get the foxpro ghetto blaster....errr....prairie blaster.

Re: Need coyote equipment help

Laffin'^......My advice is get a couple mouth calls and learn some success with them first. A guy would probably be amazed at how many callers out there don't have a clue how to call in a coyote with a hand call....

A few "hand called" coyotes and a peek at my live decoy......

Re: Need coyote equipment help

Have had excellent success with the Foxpro Prairie Blaster but if you are going to be doing a bunch of hiking, I'd go for one of their smaller models. I used to think "who in the hell pays $500 for a coyote caller?" I did and am more than pleased. Someone was selling a Prairie Blaster in the for sale section a couple of days ago. Seemed like a good deal to me. Good luck and have fun!

Re: Need coyote equipment help

Its hard to go wrong with hand calls. I personally havent gotten into the electronic calling world but am going to order a prairie blaster because of the recommendations for it.

You can go to your local outdoor store and pick up a few different coyote calls for about 10 bucks a piece and they will work just fine for most situations.

Re: Need coyote equipment help

Thanks for the advice guys.. Well except kill goose. I dont need to be talked down to so if thats your thing please move on from my thread.

PGS nice kills man, and I grabbed a couple hand calls, but I dont think Ill be able to talk my pops into learning the calls, and it will be nice to switch things up and find out what works best for my area.

Yes I am very aware I do not NEED a electronic call, and in many cases would be better off with a hand call. However the call is not just for myself, and given the situation I would like to get a electronic call IN ADDITION to the couple mouth calls I already picked up.

Im located in Northern California and the terrain is pretty thick where Ill be hunting. Theres a couple spots I might have access to that is pretty open, so Im thinking Im going to pick up the firestorm and jack decoy for now, and then if I need more volume Ill grab an additional speaker for it down the road. I just wanted to make sure I wasnt buying something that was junk before I pull the trigger on it. I also get a great deal on the firestorm through a buddy who sells outdoor gear. Should be about $330 and the jack about $35, so even if I end up spending another $50-80 on a external speaker Ill be under my budget and have a small portable unit to pack.

Re: Need coyote equipment help

PGS, Are those binos range finders also? What brand? Thanks Nice pics. Those dogs look like they've got good fur. How were fur prices up there this year?

Re: Need coyote equipment help

+1 on foxpro Cs-24b. Best bang for your buck. Excellent remote.

They are a set of Viper II's i believe.. Do not know exactly who makes them though. We have a couple pairs of them over here in afghanistan. Can range out past 2500 yards and is very accurate.

PGS used to run the VECTOR IV's now he's got the Vector 21's, amazing pieces of equipment these LRF's are.

Re: Need coyote equipment help

If you want to spend the money then settle for no less than the Foxpro CS24 or the Longer range capable krakatoa.

Re: Need coyote equipment help

I was going to pm skinney but looks like he is over his pm limit so I throw it out there for others.. Anyone use any cover up/distraction sents?

Re: Need coyote equipment help

Not for coyotes. I distract them with a 55 grain Nosler.

Re: Need coyote equipment help

Do you hunt snows in the spring??

Re: Need coyote equipment help

The nice thing about an an ecaller is you can hunt anything with it (within the law). Here in So. Cal I use one for crows and it is EXTREMELY effective. Wouldn't hunt crows without it...

Re: Need coyote equipment help

I hate using hand calls, I have used the cs 24 and is a great caller, remote is awesome, nice thing is that the caller doesn't have to be sitting next to you and you can set it to the side and keep the dogs from pin pointing you when your calling worth the money.

Re: Need coyote equipment help

I run mouth calls on at least the first three dogs of the season. Then I find myself pulling them out for fun later on just because:

Re: Need coyote equipment help

A friend of mine has a Prairie Blaster and it works awesome. It's called in yotes in places I didn't think they were. If he ever moves away, I'll get my own, I like it htat much.

Re: Need coyote equipment help

Picked up the fury gx7 and Skyote call. I'm going to throw a turkey feather decoy together and I think I'm good to go on gear for a bit. Maybe try a mouth call once I get things sorted and start taking some dogs.

Re: Need coyote equipment help

There will be at least three sets of Vectors at the shoot this weekend...

Re: Need coyote equipment help

Nice kitty you got there...never tried the feather trick but called lots of coyotes and fox with a hand call. I suppose the e-callers work as well, just never used one of them.

Buddy of mine has a Fox-pro but he still uses the hand calls from time to time just to change up the sound.

No, but Jake is....he has a Vector.

Re: Need coyote equipment help

I have a primos alpha dogg.
My friend has a fox pro firestorm and mine is louder hands down and cheaper then over priced foxpros.
The remote works farther then fox pros too.

That's funny. My buddy just bought an Alpha Dogg and both of us thought it sounded like a old record player. The sound quality was not very good with lots of distortion and what sounded like "scratches" in the playback. It was loud though.

Re: Need coyote equipment help

I use a foxpro spitfire and the black jack decoy. Works with coyotes and bobcat.
I use camouflage and blinds and hunt with the wind. Do not use cover scents. Use good glass because they will scout it out and if you spot them 1st it makes a good day. Always helpful to have a buddy glassing too.

Re: Need coyote equipment help

I believe the fury's tx-500 remote has a lot longer range then tx9 that comes with the firestorm, in addition to that I plan to run an additional speaker with it. I couldnt see packing around the primos alpha setup, as well as I have heard of several sound quality issue like stated above. The fury should be here on monday or tue next week and Ill find out what kind of sound Ill get, but based off several threads on the predator forums Im almost positive Ill be happy with it.
