Anybody Golf on here?

If so what's your handicap and where do you usually play? Play on any top 100 courses?

I don't really keep track of my handicap, but I suppose it's around a 5. I'm usually in the mid to upper 70's. Never played on a top 100 course, but I've been playing Maryland National and Musket Ridge for the past year, and they're really nice. Thinking about possibly playing Whiskey Creek this year, but it's about an hour drive. That is apparently a crazy nice course.

On a side note, anybody know anyone who can get me on Pine Valley, Merion, Congressional, Oakmont or Shinnecock Hills?
cool.gif
They're all within a reasonable driving distance from me. Although, frankly, if anyone knows someone who is willing to let me play something like Cypress Point I'd fly out in a heartbeat.

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

Golf is my life these days. I work at a golf course for the time being while I'm waiting on my OCS packet to finish up. Id be lucky to break 100 these days as the past four years of college didn't lend me much time or money for the game. Unfortunately I'm no where near you and have no experience with those courses.

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

I'm with you Johnny. I'd travel any where for a great round of golf. In good weather, I golf 1-3 times a week. My handicap hovers around 11-12. I've played most of the courses in Utah and some in California. Most notable recently is Haggin Oaks in Sacramento. It's by no means a Congressional but it used to be a regular stop for the PGA. Ben Hogan won his first professional check there. Not long, but tight with postage stamp greens. We're lucky in Utah. There is a lot of great golf at low prices. Average round walking is $30.

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

I live in the South East. I used to play on mini tours that traveled up north to south and central U.S. It was fun but man if you are not in the top 4 on Sunday you are sucking hind tit.

Had to stop playing once i got married.

Yea, you know that there's a 10 year waiting list to be a member at congressional. On top of that, once you wait the ten years, and pay the crazy membership fee of probably 100+ grand, you still have to wait another 2 years to use the golf course.

Insane.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Average round walking is $30</div></div>

That's heaven. I've been playing in maryland recently, and even though the places I've been playing are really nice, they're still like 90 bucks to play in the morning. Luckily I like to play later in the day, and most of the clubs have a twilight rate after 2pm of around 60 to ride.

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

When I stopped playing regularly I was around an 8 handicap, but I'm guessing I'm probably around a 16 or more since college has stopped me from playing...ever. And to think I just bought an almost brand new pair of Mizuno MP-14's to play with. My old pair got worn completely out. I used to play at the Lion Golf Club in Bremen, Georgia, and now I play at the Robert Trent Jones Grand National club here in Opelika when I get the chance. The nicest course I've played on though was Ka'anapali Golf Course in Maui.

Dude, for a second there I thought you meant the real RTJ club.

http://www.rtjgc.com/Club/Scripts/Home/home.asp

I was about to be like "DUDE, GET ME ON!", lol. I found the one you were talking about and it still looks like a really nice course though.

On a side note, yea, the Mizunos are awesome. I've got a set of mp-62's right now with the KBS 6.0's. Thinking about scooping up a set of the mp69's beings my 7 iron is bent to shit. (swinging forged irons in house near really hard things = bad idea)

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

yup I golf but just got into it about 4 years ago or so. When I am playing on a weekly basis I'm typically in the 80s...lately have not been playing so probably 90s, maybe low 100s lol

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

I play but I am not very good. No great course either. Played at Branson Creek once it's 100 green fees but no congressional.

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

Played from age 2 to about 20, but really stopped after high school. Did junior tournaments, the works. I have no idea how Congressional is now, but we played it as kids (12 yr olds). My favorite course is still Stanford (didn't go to school there, only played there once). The tee shot on the first hole is awesome. Torrey Pines was always pretty nice, too - played a few rounds there during time out West.

Since about age 14, I've used a set of Ping Karsten IIIs - dad's hand-me-downs that I still won't give back. I think I hit around a 7 or 8 handicap before I hung up the sticks but didn't often put scores in near the end. A good day was 75. A bad day was 85. I ended up getting bored and had too many rounds of frustration after having not practiced enough and remembering what I used to be able to do.

Now I play once a year at the company tourney. Last year I brought only a seven iron and had about 30 putts. Don't ask about the rest of the round...

The year before I broke my 3 iron with the best swing I'd had in about 4 years. Tee shot on a short dogleg left, hit it perfectly - knew it would be 210 right down the left half of the fairway, except that the club got really light right after impact, and the club head was what ended up heading straight down the fairway, about 30 yards, and the ball right with it. Brittle fractured the shaft right at the joint.

One point - rain grips (gloves...I'm pretty sure they are called rain grips - come in a set for both hands, usually black and felt looking) are amazing. Get them if you don't have them. Also, find some old guy who is a regular golfers - they are usually the most fun to share a round with. A guy who flew combat sorties in the Pacific that still gets anxious over a $2 Nassau is great company. Also, if you ever want real pressure, carry only a $5 in your wallet and bet $10 on the round. That same old man will make you feel every bit of humiliation when you lose.

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

I played with golf balls once, it was a blast. They really come apart when hit with a 338/408.

The head of my driver fell off at the start of last years season. I got a new shaft in it the year before and I guess the cold weather made the glue brittle or something. Thing flew like 100 yards at least. Good thing there was only me on the range, lol.

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

I used to play 5 times a week when I was a teenager. Got my handicap down to 2 once. Now I still love to play but never get to. I played about 5 times in 2011.

If yall are ever in the Santa Fe area you gotta play Paa-Ko Ridge. It's one of my all-time favorites.

Also, if you ever get to play the course at the ski resort in Telluride, Colorado you should just for the scenery and elevation. You cannot image how far a golf ball will go at nearly 10,000 feet. One par 4 had a pond crossing the fairway. It was about 380 carry (I use a rangefinder), and I teed up with my driver and two guys I was playing with looked at me like I was crazy. They said you can't carry that and I said sure I can... and I did.

Also, if anyone goes to Destin, FL... I always play at Windswept Dunes to the northeast of Sandestin. It is a fantastic course and half the price of Kelly Plantation and Regatta Bay. It's also not NEARLY as crowded. Very very good value for your dollar. It's also the longest course in the state of Florida so be prepared to hit driver, then 3 wood into par 4's if you play the tips.

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

I just played Paa-Ko Ridge about 2 years ago. I agree it is a must play if you like golf, but bring plenty of extra balls with you. If you are having an off day it is pretty easy to burn through 3 or 4 balls.

That reminds me. I think it was either the last or second to last time I played last year, it was at Musket Ridge in Maryland (if you happen to know the course) and I shit you not I shot a double bogey on the first hole, and took 3 penalty strokes on the round (3 lost balls) and still somehow managed to scrape out a 75 (par 72). Even par through last 15 holes. Course is in the mountains so it's not exactly easy.

I'll be honest, I was surprised myself. Weird how I was playing so well and still managing to lose so many balls. I even duffed a few shots around an easy birdie (maybe even eagle) par 5 to get par. I'm on the very back fringe in 2 and I duff the chip,....then duff the next chip. I was pissed, lol. Crazy back and forth round.

Edit: Damn. I just saw that course you were talking about and it really does look nice. I checked the rates and was shocked. Crazy cheap for what looks to be a VERY nice course.

http://www.paakoridge.com/rates.htm

In comparison, this is the course I'm gonna try and play at least once this year.

http://www.whiskeycreekgolf.com/whiskey.asp

Off season rates are still 60-70's.

And these are the courses I have been playing recently:

One I was talking about above:
http://www.musketridge.com/Club/Scripts/Home/home.asp

And this course you'll be lucky to break 90 on:
http://www.marylandnational.com/

They're both literally right next to eachother, but I have yet to break 80 on Maryland National. Little better shape, and the greens are perfect and role true, but it's just so hard tee to green. You can only hit driver on like half the holes because the landing areas are so jacked up. Luckily they have gps in the carts.

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

There are lots of decent course in central Florida one can play for under $45.00 and some far less. My home course has been The Claw at USF in north Tampa.

I'm happy to get into the low 90's on that narrow jungle bastard! At the moment, I'm working through a new swing and finally starting to re-acclimate myself to a swing with no over-the-top gorilla flail!

It's amazing what happens when one comes in on plane with a reasonable, non stranglehold grip!

Did you ever play Innisbrook? I've been there. It's right in the Tampa area.

Also, Siesta Key has some of the nicest beaches I've ever seen (in person at least). Sand is like flour.

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

I have but it's been many moons! It was a scramble hosted by one of my clients, or one of their's!

Tampa Palms is a real high end course I've played a couple times. It is to the northwest of the Claw! If you scroll over on the map I linked to, you can compare and contrast as it is just on the other side of the jungle from the USF course!

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

Just got back from the range for the first time this year and I gotta say I'm not hitting it all that bad for not playing all winter and just getting out of major surgery two months ago. Pretty much right where I left off last year it seems. Could still use a couple extra yards though. Couple years ago I could hit my 6 iron about 195, now I'm lucky if I get 175 out of it. I'm trying to get more forward shaft lean and rotate my hips more, but if I try too hard I just hosel shank it, lol.

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

Shanks only happen for me with the wedges....usually I am too close to the ball...and standing too upright. If I get by back angle correct, the shanks go away. They are a pain for sure.

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

I play suck and still like it but I used to love it. Hard for me to want to set that much time aside to play as much these days. I do know just hearing the word shank increases you chances of hitting one soon by 100%. Curse word IMO. Playing Shady Oaks this weekend my favorite course in town by a long shot. Have fun. PG

Sometimes it's just in addressing the ball...if it feels weird, 9 times out of 10 you'll hit a bad shot. If it's happening every shot, then just think about what a nice day it is outside and enjoy the walk. If I felt something weird on the backswing and kept on going, it was going to be a bad shot. Just like shooting, don't force a bad position.

The thing that always killed me was rushing the downswing. Interestingly enough, if I could see my shadow out in front of the ball (towards the direction of travel...usually), I always hit a great shot, because it made me conscious of that pause at the top in a way the forebrain couldn't.

Yea, I know, but the problem was, I couldn't get comfortable. It's like I forgot how, lol. It felt like I was gonna hit a foot behind the ball every time I set up to it(and I would have too if I didn't adjust), so I felt like I had to put it farther back in my stance and even exaggerate the forward press to not hit behind it, but then that caused the shank. On a side note, even though I was hitting everything shorter than usual, I was hitting the long irons great, lol.

All I gotta say is, at least I'm consistant. If I'm doing something wrong, at least I do it wrong exactly the same way on every shot. I remember I was hitting it off the toe a couple years ago, so I went to get a lesson. The guy put that tape on my club that shows you where the ball is hitting, and sure enough it was on the toe. Took a couple more shots and I shit you not I must have lined up the dimples perfectly. The spot just kept getting darker, lol.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">If it's happening every shot, then just think about what a nice day it is outside and enjoy the walk.</div></div>

Funny you should say that. That particular day it was about 45 degrees with literally 30-40mph sustained winds. So much so that it was actually effecting the break of puts, and balls were blowing off tees. I remember I had to crush a 6 iron (which I usually hit about 175) to a flag that was 120yds away, and it actually ended up pin high. I usually hit a pitching wedge 120, lol. Crazy. It was the most wind I've personally witnessed. The only fun part was beings I knew I wasn't going to shoot well, I was just trying to hit stingers all day.

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

As the name implies, I have played my fair share of golf. I started playing a little when I was 11 and played golf in high school back when it wasn't cool.

4 years ago I got down to a .6 hcp index and was playing the best golf of my life. Then my neck blew up and I had to have a cervical fusion - last year I ended up at 6.5. I've played a some courses around Ohio and a few in FL. I have played in the Ohio Sr. Am. twice and the USGA Sr. Am. Sectional once and the USGA Sr. Open Sectional once.

This year I am essentually taking the year off, so I'll probably only play 3-4 times.

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

I've played golf most of my life. I'd suggest working on your pre shot routine in a consistent way and practice it enough so that you can't set up to the ball wrong. Things like your stance, distance from ball, ball position, posture, head position, being relaxed, etc.; everything should look and feel the same for every shot. If you put your body into position exactly the same way for each and every shot it's easier to tell when things don't look or feel right, and easier to fix it. (Very similar to shooting!) Having a trained observer (golf insturctor) can be very helpful too.

Same advice applies to the swing itself. Same start, same balance, same finish, every time. Like shooting, the results will vary a bit, but consistency will come.

And never, ever mention the word sh_nk again.

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

I'm a big fan of Pia Nillson and Lynn Marriot. Their 'Golf54' approach is, to me, the essence of what golf is all about.

It helped Annika Sorenstam become one of the greatest golfers of all time, and many of the things they teach turn out to be things I've stumbled on in my years of playing golf.

It's very difficult to play the game at the highest levels, but there is no reason the average player has to struggle with improving themselves - both on and off the course.

Formulating a plan, visualizing and even vocalizing the result before the shot is taken, and most of all, learning to trust the mind's ability to execute - these are what they teach instead of 'angle this', 'hold that', 'rotate this', etc.

I'm reading their book 'Every Shot Must Have a Purpose' for the second time, and it's really helped me understand the power of golf.

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

I used to play all the time when I lived in south fla and worked at the polo club. I never paid to play. Anyway, 9 holes was fine for me when I played 18 I felt like i've wasted my entire day. When, i moved to nj I sold my clubs and haven't looked back since.

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

I'm a golf instructor... played two years at community college. peaked at a +2 for awhile. tried to get out to practice for the US open qualifier this year, but it's hard to get time to play! maybe next year!

Overwhelming majority of my clients shank the ball because of excessive lateral movement into the ball (hip slide) vs. turning the hips through the shot.

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

Yep. I play to about a 5... I get about 6 rds a month in at my CC and down in Monterrey. I'm the lucky bastard with business partners who are members at Spyglass, Monterey Penninsula, an cypress.

In college I played to a .5-1.0. Right now I am struggling with my driver. Six months ago, I began changing my drivers downswing to become a bit more steep in order to hit a low cut rather than a high draw. Difficult change. I've gone from a 3 hcp to a 5 in that time due to bad driver play. I still fightthe old swing. I changedbc It gets windy here and the high draw was too susceptible to wind.

I play R11 TP driver with a 81 gram diamana red shaft X-flex, R11 TP 3 wood with the same shaft as driver, R9 TP irons w/kbs tour x-flex shafts, volley custom shop 48,52,56,60 wedges and a Scotty Cameron x-5 prototype putter.

I've played pine valley, whistling straights (all 4), all Bandon course, chambers bay, Olympic, merion, shinnecock, Chicago cc, pine hurst no 2, and 4, cypress, pebble, sf club, spy, la cc, Torrey, PGA west all 5 courses, Edgewood, congressional, national, Los Cabos, troon, tepc Scottsdale... To name a handful. I've been very fortunate to be in a business where most people i deal with are serious about golf.

Golf is a great sport, a true mental game. Hope that more ppl got into it.

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

Holy shit my day just sucked. I know I will get very little sympathy beings my day consisted of getting up late and going golfing, but I was hitting the ball fantastic today and scored like shit.

A couple of crazy shit went down that I can't even fathom today.

First I would like to say that the first hole, I hit a great drive(like I was doing all day. Must have hit 14-15 fairways), then hit a great second shot with a 9 iron from about 145 to I'd say 10 feet (we'll get to that later). The putt was a little tricky, and I missed it and got par. Not gonna get too upset about that. Second hole was a par 5, again hit a great drive about 280 right down the middle. Hit a great 5 wood off the deck too about 75 yards (long hole), then hit a wedge and lipped out for the eagle, and tapped in for the bird.

Okay, skip ahead a couple holes, because much of the same happens for the next few. I double bogey a par three because I messed up a tee shot that shouldn't have happened. Not too upset, because I'm playing so well, I figure I can get back some of those strokes. Very next hole, I hit a drive about 310 yards on a 344 yard hole, so I just have a wedge in, but it's a really hard shot because the front of the green is a steep drop off and not only is the flag way in the front, but these greens don't hold a ball worth a damn. So I somehow manage a fantastic shot to about 3 feet, and I even had people watching, lol. I get over the putt and I can just feel it in my bones that I'm gonna make it. Ever so slight right to lefter, and the hole just looks too big to miss. I stroke the putt and it didn't break a god damned millimeter. In disgust I look away and I can absolutely not believe I missed it, but not only that, I look back and it rolled by about 15 feet! These greens were crazy hard, so needless to say I missed the one coming back for bogey.

Now I know most of the game is mental, and I was trying not to get pissed, but there is no way in hell that ball should have missed, and I couldn't help but get upset.

The rest of the round was much of the same - hitting great shots only to miss ten putts on the green. Then on the back nine everything started going wrong. Remember that 9 iron from 145? That's what I usually hit it, but I step up to the 16th tee and at 143 yards (according to the gps I have) I hit one of the best 8 irons shots I've ever hit (par 3 island green). Now, you guys know when you hit a fabulous shot right? You can feel it at impact, you can hear the wip of the club and the perfect contact being made, you can feel how hard you swung, and you can see it in the ball flight. Well I hit this 8 iron just as good as anyone has ever hit one. I'm talking just everything went exactly right for this ball to be struck as good as it was, and I shit you not it came short. I've hit 8 iron 180 level, and this thing comes short? That pretty much sumed up my round. I felt like I was in la la land where everything doesn't make sense.

So after hitting so many great shots, I lose 6 balls from holy shit WTF just happened kinda shit. All of them pro v-1x's at about 5 dollars a ball. I know two of them I only hit one time, and that was the time they went OB. That coupled with my putting performace just makes me need a couple beers to try and forget it, lol.

Oh well, I just had to come on here and vent.

I've run 18 on that course a few times. Twin Warriors and a few other less notable courses in that area to add. I don't golf much however, much of my years worth of golfing is near Albuquerque in yearly vacation. Both those courses are a great view, expecially for a midwestern tourist.

I am a total hack. If I pocket tee-box showmanship and lay short with accuracy, I can be competative against better golfers, or atleast the ones in my group (me being the worst). Both of those courses spread out that normal last 150yrds of difficulty in score to the whole hole. From my hack perspective. It's a intimidating course but beautiful. Twin Warriors does'nt allow footprint off much of the fairway.

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

A golf course is a sad misuse of a perfectly good rifle range.

Although I flew over a golf course today.

Re: Anybody Golf on here?

This thread does need more pictures. How about we start posting pics of your bag, vids of your swing, or pics of some courses you've played.

I'll contribute some.

Here's my swing as of today. Still needs a lot of work. Watch in full screen to see ball flight.

And I was really bored the other day, but managed this. And no, there was no glue involved.
