Gunsmithing Surgeon Rifles Bottom Metal/DBM - Installation

Hey yall,

Newer member here. I have only made a few posts so far as I just got mt Remington SPS Tact .308 the other day. I ordered some stuff for it from Brownells. Well like a dunce, I realized after I ordered it that the Surgeon Rifles DBM conversion kit may require gunsmithing. I was told on my main forum (M14forum.com) to swing by here and ask yall. I had originally planned to do it myself, then as I got to reading online it seemed like most gave up and went to a gunsmith. If it does require any gunsmithing, does anyone know of a competant smith here new Jax, Fl? I live in Palm Coast, so the closer the better. If I decide to do it myself, how hard is it to do really? I will be using the Hogue overmolded stock it comes with. Thanks and sorry if this question has already been asked.

Here is a link to what I ordered:

Re: Surgeon Rifles Bottom Metal/DBM - Installation

you can try it because if you fuck it up you can buy an replacement stock on here for 40-50 bucks. its not easy and you'd be best served getting a smith to do it and check function because there is nothing worse than feeding problems...........

suarez tactical here is in FL, Bugholes is in FL, i think

but honestly I would waste gunsmith money on a stock you will eventually ditch for a better stock.

Re: Surgeon Rifles Bottom Metal/DBM - Installation

I have never looked into this, but I believe the HS precision bottom metal is a drop in for a R700:

I have yet to ever come across them in stock, and I would call someone at brownells to make sure they are true "drop-in." Perhaps someone here on the forum knows ...

Surgeon bottom metal is nice, but expensive. If it is new and unused you might want to consider returning it and going with CDI Precision (Jeff Allen) in Sarasota, FL. He does good work and can install the DBM for you. If you upgrade to a Manners or a McMillan stock afterwards they can inlet the stock for CDI bottom metal. The cost of the CDI bottom metal with installation is roughly the cost of the surgeon bottom metal.

Re: Surgeon Rifles Bottom Metal/DBM - Installation

It can be done by hand with a dremel and the right bits but, W/O a mill it's a huge PITA. Once the inletting has been completed I've found it best to bed the DBM 100%. Makes for a much better job.

Re: Surgeon Rifles Bottom Metal/DBM - Installation

I had an h-s dbm unit and it was truly drop in. But mags were expensive and really hard to come by. If you don't need a bunch of mags and can find one reasonably priced, go for it
