I've got a 16" OBR that should be arriving soon, and I'm struggling to choose between a Nightforce NXS 2.5-10 Mil-Dot and a USO 1.8-10 Mil-GAP. Both are fairly similar scopes on paper, but I don't have any first hand experience with either to really make a judgement. Actually, I have shot the nightforce before, but only briefly and I wasn't able to spend time making an assessment.

I haven't had experience with the EREK knob or any USO scope to be honest. I'm not sure that the USO is worth the extra coin. The difference is about $500 and that buys a lot of ammo.

Which company has better CS? Who has a better warranty? What do you have to say about either of these scopes if you have experience with them? I've heard rave reviews about both so it will be tough to choose.

Both companies have good customer service, however you'll be less likely to have to use the Nightforce customer service. The glass on them is a wash. Everything else on the Nightforce is better to me. The NF is about a half pound lighter. They are constructed better in my opinion and will be more likely to track and hold up to use. Also, I've never had Nightforce tell me to beat my scope on a phonebook to knock shit out of the reticle....

You are going to get fanboy exaggerated responses if this goes like most comparison threads. They are both excellent scopes but you are comparing apples to oranges. The NF is not FFP and has no parallax adjustment. Those are deal breakers for me regardless of who makes it. NF no doubt makes good durable scopes but IMO the USO 1.8-10 is the best 10x scope available but we all have differing expectations and uses.

Re: Experience with both NF 2.5-10 and USO SN3 1.8-10?

Your issue should be less about warranty and cs (equal there) and more on performance and/or preferences.
Both are fairly equal in most all respects.
It boils down to how you like each one.
Tough decision but nice to have those options.
I have the NF 2.5x10x32 and a USO 3.2x17x44 (not an equal comparison).
In the low power I would tend to lean NF (less weight) ~ move up in magnification the USO is more my choice although the F1 would be tough to turn down.
Good Luck.

Re: Experience with both NF 2.5-10 and USO SN3 1.8-10?

I have about a dozen NF 2.5-10x24, but not the x32. I also have the USO SSDS 3.?-17 which is not the same either, but have used both a great deal.
You do not state what your use is. For my use, which is day/night varmint hunting and shooting to 800 yards this is what I think.
I much prefer the USO mil scale and FFP. Glass is a wash. NF is more compact, but some of that is lost in the x32 mod. I like the internal level of the USO. I prefer the adj of the USO. I also think which ever you choose, you will think you have made a good choice. My NF's have thousands more rds through them than the USO, and none have failed.

Re: Experience with both NF 2.5-10 and USO SN3 1.8-10?

I swear I remember mentioning how I plan on using the rifle - mostly target shooting at closer distances, but I will also have the opportunity to shoot at 700-800 yds a few times each year.

I like that the NF is more compact, but I don't like the lack of parallax adjustment. I don't mind that the NF is 2nd focal. I also have a trijicon accupoint tr24 that I'll put on the rifle for more practical shooting and hunting if I ever chose to, so this optic would be primarily used at its higher magnification range. I've had people suggest something with higher magnification since I have multiple optics, but it's still a 16" carbine and part of what excites me about the gun is not being too bulky/hefty.

Re: Experience with both NF 2.5-10 and USO SN3 1.8-10?

NF 2.5-10x eye relief is easy & forgiving, and the compact size & weight make it a cinch to mount on anything in any way. Heck, the NF was way easier to get behind than a USO 1-4x. As folks mention above, no parallax kills it right around 500 yards. The NF would be an ideal bush/hunting rifle scope. The thicker mildot reticle is a must.

I had one & sold it in favor of the USO 1.8-10x. USO is bigger, bulkier, and heavier. Eye relief is a little shorter but sight picture is a heck of a lot bigger. For practical application, it's got parallax, FFP (which is debatable if needed for the zoom range). USO is also considerable more expensive. It's got more of what I need, but I'm not exactly convinced it's a better choice.

If you set up for faster <500 yard work with very seldom 700-800, I would go with the NF mil/mil ZS (HS not available). If you think >500 will be regular, I'd go with the USO -- get ERGO, skip TPAL. Every TPAL I've owned & looked thru has horrible DOV.

Re: Experience with both NF 2.5-10 and USO SN3 1.8-10?

I tried a NF 2.5-10x32 and bought a USO 1.8-10x37. It's a little heavier and bigger. With rings my scope is 1.9 pounds (rings are .25 pound). However for this I get FFP, adjustable parallax, reticle of my choice, knobs of my choice, left hand setup, colour of my choice, illumination colour of my choice, and knowing my money is going to a US company.

Decide what features are important to you and how you want to use it; then go from there.

Re: Experience with both NF 2.5-10 and USO SN3 1.8-10?

i actually had an OBR(an 18") with the 2.5-10x24 for awhile. i didnt do much shooting past 500yrds and the scope worked perfect for that role. its a good little scope with decent mag, and nice features. i ended up selling the OBR in favor of the bolt, and put the NF on an MK12 clone, which also works out really nice.

no experience with the USO, so cant help ya there, but i can tell you when i had the 2.5-10x24 on the OBR, i really liked it. had a bud who also had an 18" OBR and he put a 3.5-15x50 NF on there, and that was nice too...not to throw a wrench your options, just food for thought

Re: Experience with both NF 2.5-10 and USO SN3 1.8-10?

I have owned both. I like the compactness of the NF, and I still have it on an HCS RECCE.

The USO, I think, was the better overall scope. But it cost more.

The NF has those mushy clicks. Really feels like NF cut a corner here to me, but it is still usable. Overall a great scope and I likely will leave it on the carbine, just not a fan of the turret clicks.

If cost is a issue, contact me and I'll hook you up on a 1.8-10 USO

i will agree that the NF dose have mushy clicks, really dont like that, but as hydro mentioned, its still very usuable

Re: Experience with both NF 2.5-10 and USO SN3 1.8-10?

Lots of food for thought. The good news is that I am not in a rush to make up my mind. I can use the TR24 to enjoy the gun until I come to a decision.

The USO would really be stretching my budget, so I might have to buy used. That minimizes the advantage of USO's customization.

Ideally I could spend a bit more time saving up to buy a USO decked out with all the options I want, but that's a slippery slope. I don't want to have more than $2000 invested in this scope and it would be nice if I could get under that with the cost of a mount included.

Re: Experience with both NF 2.5-10 and USO SN3 1.8-10?

Have been using a couple of the USO 1.8-10X44 on 6mm RAT and 308 AR's. Both are used for hunting and DMR type matches. They have preformed very well in both applications and excel in the DMR role. The FFP reticle allows leads on movers at any power with no thought as well as wind holds. They are heavier and some what more bulky, hasn't been an issue.

Don't own a NF 2.5-10 but have shot them a lot (one of my favorite shooting buddies swears by them). The glass is a touch better than the USO to my eyes, turrets a bit less user friendly.

If you are going to use the rifle / scope combo a lot get the USO, for more of a hunting / casual target combo the NF would be nice.
