175 SMK in 7-08 ?

Re: 175 SMK in 7-08 ?

Nope, I use the 150's now, 10 twist barrel (but gonna be changing it).

My guess is that you'd need a minimum 9- and perhaps an 8 twist- to stabilize it. Is your twist fast enough?

Re: 175 SMK in 7-08 ?

I am running a 9 twist. I can stabilize the 168 Berger VLD, so with any luck the 175 should be fine.
Starting load development tomorrow. I will update here after the range trip.

Re: 175 SMK in 7-08 ?

They work very well. I ran this combo with R 17, out of a 22" barrel I was able to get to 2750, it was a warm load for my rifle, I later backed it down to 2685, it shot very well there and didn't have pressure problems after a string of 10 or so.

Varget would yield around 2620 and was very accurate as well.

If I were you I would start with H4350, you should get good velocity, without having the temp stability issues of R17.

Use Litz's G7 data of 0.327 as it matches much better than Sierra's reported bc.

Re: 175 SMK in 7-08 ?

I tried the 175 SMK today, and they did great. Much easier to load for than the 162 in my rifle.

I am running 2700 fps with no pressure using H4350.

That's a lot of performance.

Anyone reading this should take some time and run the numbers on this compared to a 308 or a 260/6.5creed/6.5x47. Use 0.327 for a G7 on the 7mm 175smk's. Then look at your component cost/barrel life. It'll make you want to build a 7-08.

No joke...wonder how long the barrel is?

Re: 175 SMK in 7-08 ?

A quick follow up.
I shot out to 1020 yds today, and my chart for 2700 Fps was spot on. I was very happy with how the bullets did in the 10+ mph cross wind as well.
I wont tell you the 7mm 08 is better that a 6mm or 6.5mm, but I have shot a lot of all three and I like the 7mm 08 the most.

My rifle is an aiae MK2 with a 26" Benchmark TSI contour barrel and Muscle Brake.

What makes them easier to load than the 162's?

No kidding. I just put together a 7-08 for a friend. I'm seeing 2775 with 162amax and 46.5 H4350... I built a 284 over the winter, and am kinda kicking myself in the ass for not simply goibg with a 7-08, or going balls-deep with a 7 short mag.
