So I'm looking to get some tools. The basics mostly, screwdrivers, torx/hex bits, punches, brass hammer etc.... I'm looking for a good brand, so far it seems like I'm leaning towards Grace, Pachmayr, Magna Tip, and Chapman . I have tools from on the farm here, but would like to build up something for the firearms that aren't all heavily used. I'm all ears on suggestions here.

Re: Screwdrivers/Punches etc.....

The sets from Brownells have worked really well for me.

Expensive, but worth it. Recently I built two African guns that used slotted screws. Anything short of purpose built tools would have surely ruined the slots during fitting/assembly.

Punches: Starrret. Nothing I've found even comes close. MSC/Enco/McMaster carr all carry them. Too expensive from Brownells.

Hammers: a 4oz Snap On has lasted me for 15 years along with the delrin/brass combination from brownells.

Leather mallets are handy too.

Buy them and cry once. It's worth it.

Good luck.

C.

Re: Screwdrivers/Punches etc.....

to the OP, et al....

I suggest that staying away (far away) from the Chapman 'gunsmith screwdrivers' is a good thing. When I was young and first getting into 'smithing, I was given a set as a gift.

Through simple and specific use, as intended and not abused, more than one tip broke RIGHT WHEN IT REALLY SHOULDN'T HAVE. The aftermath caused further finish/appearance issues that were not intended not convenient. Don't learn the hard way, learn from others mistakes.

Save up for the Brownell's set, and you'll be miles ahead. They are expensive, but you are definitely getting the quality you're paying for. Remember, the right tool for the job is the way to start. That, and the items that you're working on are generally worth more than you can replace easily. Not just in cost, but in customers 'sentiment' as well.

Re: Screwdrivers/Punches etc.....

Brownells sounds like the ticket. Quality is worth price. Rather spend more for a set that will fit screws right. No marred up screws or finishes is worth it. Thanks fellas!

Re: Screwdrivers/Punches etc.....

I have the brownells set of screwdrivers, It was VERY expensive when it comes to screwdrivers but worth every penny to have the proper slot, phillips, and allen. My FIL has the set from brownells that is a handle with a bunch of bits, its ok and a great set I just prefer dedicated drivers.

Re: Screwdrivers/Punches etc.....

+1 on the Brownells screwdrivers, both the individual screwdrivers and the bit sets, as well as the Starret pin punches.

If you use a small punch a lot, such as a 1/16", try the Brownells punch with the replaceable punch pin. I got tired of bending the Starret 1/16 punch and bought one of the starter punches and one with a longer pin. Now WHEN (not IF) I bend one, I've got a bag or replacement pins ready to go and my projects don't get held up waiting for a new punch to arrive.

Re: Screwdrivers/Punches etc.....

While we are on hand tools are there any brand recommendations for taps?

Re: Screwdrivers/Punches etc.....

The magna tip set from Brownells is good stuff. I have that an the cheap Chapman set for my range bag. I bit the bullet long ago and got the master set one Xmas. It was a good purchase.

I have Starrett punches but also have Craftsman (Sears) that I use most of the time. Lifetime warranty when you break them and for general work they are fine.

For taps if you can find your size OSG / Greenfield are top shelf.
I have used them for many years and they are my #1 pick.

What is the best suggestion for a lr308 barrel nut wrench? Any other AR308 type tool recommendations?
