Postman dropped it off today! Its one fine piece of measuring device, Im hoping itll stand up better than the Chinese crap I got from Frankfurt Arsenal, though I did get that back together when I found the main ring that holds the crystal in place. The new electronic readout will please my eye better anyways, who cares that I paid 120 bucks, its so cool, LOL

Well for my purposes I wont be able to tell the difference, though this one does measure to the .0005".

Re: The NEW Mitutoyo is in!

I've got two (one's fitted with the comparator). Great calipers and are always dead on when they go in for calibration every year.

At best a dial caliper is still only a dial caliper.....

You can put a hundred different pressures on the thumb wheel and get a hundred different measurements.

Takes a skilled hand to be "accurate" with one.........

Re: The NEW Mitutoyo is in!

120 bucks for a caliper...

lol...

Re: The NEW Mitutoyo is in!

Very nice, annd the zero anywhere feature is convient.im still old school i like my starrett dial.

Re: The NEW Mitutoyo is in!

gonna pull the trigger on a mitutoyoy, have done all kinds of comparisons on brown &sharpe, starrett, probably top 3 brands, mitutoyo won out on a few different areas, although $120.00 can be on the low side of their stuff!

So very true. This is why we always called them either "Optical-Comparitor's" (because all the operator is doing is visually comparing one measurement with another) or "Very-neer's" because the number shown will be "very near" to what the actual measurement is.

And to find out what the actual measurement IS, a micrometer is used. And yes, they too need to be 'learned' how to operate properly.

As long as the same operator is doing the same measuring, using the same tools, they'll be quite close. But when others are thrown into the mix, or numbers given/written by others, then things can/do go astray.

Re: The NEW Mitutoyo is in!

I've found that even with a micrometer equipped with a friction-slip wheel (only allows a fixed amount of pressure to be applied) I still get differing measurements if I go far enough into the decimal places.

One thing about the battery-powered tools - the 'coin batteries' that power these tools are not all the same. There may be some industry uniformity in the overall dimensions, but the exact spot where the positive side ends and the negative side starts is different with some brands. I had to try three brands before I got one that would work in my ball micrometer. I was about to send it in for repair when the manufacturer clued me in on this.

Re: The NEW Mitutoyo is in!

OldTex, that so-called 'friction-wheel' is just a gimmick. No two are the same, due to spring tension and whatnot.

But your finger is always with you. Hold the caliper with your 'pinkie' or your 'pinkie and ring finger' (depending on the size of your caliper) and drag the side of your trigger finger alongside the barrel of the caliper.

With practice, you'll be VERY consistent with ANY caliper that you pick up. You'll feel the caliper and the tension through the side of your trigger finger.

Try it out. It makes so much more sense in real life, than it does trying to write it down.

Re: The NEW Mitutoyo is in!

Mitutoyo is good stuff. I was visiting my Aunt in Grand Rapids a couple years back and happened in on a surplus store; they had a box of used mechanical Mitutoyo Calipers in their original boxes for $10/each. I got three of the nicest ones and am still using them to this day! They have custom calibration logs on the back with dates and initials so I'm assuming they were from some factory out there.
