I have an old ruger 270 with the tang safety that used to group halfway decent (1 1/2" or so)with hornady custom 140 gr. In an effort to make it a little better I ran some hoppes copper solvent through it (followed directions to the letter)and now the same hornadys are grouping at nearly 4". So i worked up some hand loads (hornady sst 140gr h4831 powder i covered the entire load range) and the best group was about 3". Then I tried some winchester supreme 130gr and that shrank it to about 2". So what I need from you guys is a good load to try or modifications that have worked for yall.I have already free floated the barrel and had the trigger worked. Btw the trashcan option is not on the table.

Re: Troublesome Ruger M77 need advice

Barrel might be a little rough and need to copper back up to shoot in. Also make sure everything is torqued correctly.

Re: Troublesome Ruger M77 need advice

Ruger M-77's shoot better dirty.
Have a Ruger M-77V in .308. If I get the barrel sparkley bright, it doesn't group from crap. Let it get dirty, it'll shoot under 1/2" all day and all night long.

Re: Troublesome Ruger M77 need advice

I haven't cleaned my M77 barrel in a year. Shoots great.

Re: Troublesome Ruger M77 need advice

I have heard the older tang safety M77's had barrels that were contracted out and the quality/internal finish was uneven.

Re: Troublesome Ruger M77 need advice

There is a chance you could have damaged the bore or throat or crown by improper cleaning. I see more rifles that have been damaged that way than any other. Throw away sectioned rods. Use coated rods like Dewey. GOOD bore guide is necessary. High quality solvents and brushes, jags etc. Clean from breech end only. Always clean chamber, and lug seat area. Torque action screws evenly.

Re: Troublesome Ruger M77 need advice

I gave up using Hoppe's along time ago because there is better stuff out there that is not so harsh on the barrel or your health. I have a M77R that is the first generation also. The barrels have always been good quality. I bought one for my son and my best friend has one. As old as it is maybe just time for a new barrel. I would have it inspected first to see if there is any issues and if there is none take it out and shoot it to see what kind of groups you get after it being fouled. Call Ruger and get the torque specs for the action screws because there are three and the main one is a very high torque setting compared to the other two. Damn good rifles!

Re: Troublesome Ruger M77 need advice

Thanks for all the good advice but i believe the devil was in the load development. After cleaning the copper out of the barrel i must have changed the characteristics just enough for it to no longer like the 140 grainers. I worked up some new loads using 130 gr. nosler ballistic tips. and here are the results [img:center]http://mail-attachment.googleusercontent...DE&sadssc=1[/img]
for a 20 year old rifle that aint to shabby. thanks again for all the advice.

Just found out the link isnt working, the group measured .477"
