OK, now I know there will be some biased answers. But I will state the specifics of what i am looking for in said ammo type and hopefully we can all agree on an answer lol..

(1) Practicality and cost ( I have never purchased either round .223 or 308

(2) Bullet projection or ammount of drop at range.

(3) Availability

The next rifle I am planning on getting is a Remington 700 SPS model. The local range I have near me only has a max of 200 YRDs to shoot and all the other places are in doors and pistol only ranges. What I am looking for is the answer to which round suites my situation the best. I am looking to be shooting 400 YRDS and closer. Highly doubt there will be a place around here that offers any more than that any time soon.. Looking for a round that is easy to get and wont cost me a lot of money every time I go shooting (100 rds or so 2 times a week) Now as far as ballistics go I have no idea, will the .223 perform as well as the 308 at 400 yrds or better or worse? How much worse? Stopping Power is not important to me. No one I know hunts big game or atleast anything bigger than a deer... If I go with them I would like to be able to bring it.. Hopefully this is enough info to allow you guys with all the experience to help me in the right direction and I greatly appreciate you guys and all your help..

Re: Remy 700 .223 VS 308

do you reload?
both is fine for targets.

.223 is cheaper all around.

ammo for both are easy to get.

.223 is fine for hunting, pending you have the right bullets.

i prefer .308 for an all around rifle.
i own both.

This may be a stupid question. But what do you mean reload? I assume this means making my own ammo at home? If so the answer is no.. Sorry for the daftness lol

Thanks for your input BTW. What about the 308 is it that you prefer?

Re: Remy 700 .223 VS 308

Most states dont allow 223 for hunting deer, so that leaves you with the 308. If you were only shooting paper I would say the 223 would be the best bet, I have a sps in 223 and I put it in a HS stock and shoot handloads into cute little dime sized groups.

Re: Remy 700 .223 VS 308

Buying store bought match grade ammo means that your going to spend about 50% more for 308 than 223.

If you're really looking for a range only gun with a 400 yard shot I'd go .223.

Especially if your gonna be sending 100 rounds down range twice a week. The wear on your shoulder and pocket book will add up.

Re: Remy 700 .223 VS 308

Thanks guys I appreciate it a lot. I would say 98% of all my shooting will be on the range. My friend and his dad go hunting.I have never been hunting. However i frequent the range a lot.. Looking like the .223 is the better choice for my needs so far..

Great! What distance are you doing this at?

Re: Remy 700 .223 VS 308

223 would be fun for target and ammo is plentiful and cheap. You can also hunt coyote and prairie dogs with your buddies. A fully glassed, and geared up sps-varmint can weight up and around 13 lbs. So for small game from prone or seated position you will be good to go. You can get the other rifle later, most folks do.

Re: Remy 700 .223 VS 308

In my option, for what you want.223. I own a rem700 SPS TACTICAL .223. For what you are describing the .223 will be just fine. I own a .300 win mag for long range hunting but for punching holes in paper at the ranges you describe .223 is the way to go. I love mine. I had minor gunsmith work done to mine and changed out to a HS Presision stock and I couldn't be happier.

Re: Remy 700 .223 VS 308

Hands down the .223 for what you describe, unless as others mentioned you plan to hunt deer with it.(though I dont recall you mentioning it) cost and accuracy will exceed your expectations.

Of course all this has been covered in painstaking detail.

This is at a 100, I brought it out to 300 with 40gn VMax under 26.5 gns varget and I am grouping about 1.25" with it, it really loves the 40gn Vmax and 52 MK

Re: Remy 700 .223 VS 308

The Remington 700 SPS in 223 is a good way to shoot a lot and not break the bank. The other thing to consider is if you plan on reloading. And reloading is much more then cost savings, its working up a load that both you and your gun can agree on.

If you have plans on hunting watch your twist rate, with the correct rate you will be able to shoot heavier bullets for stopping animals.

Re: Remy 700 .223 VS 308

get a .308 if you have any plans of hunting. .223 will reach to 400 just fine

Re: Remy 700 .223 VS 308

Damn I thought sure I had to have both.

Re: Remy 700 .223 VS 308

.223 all the way, it will give up nothing at 400yds and is still very accurate on out past that.

Re: Remy 700 .223 VS 308

Thanks guys..Looks like I will be getting the .223 when i am able to do so.. I appreciate the info and this will be my first bolt action. What would the main differences be between shooting an AR type rifle and a bolt action shooting wise?

Re: Remy 700 .223 VS 308

Trigger willbe different, recoil will be different and obviously the grip will be different on traditional stocks, all easy to manage though.
