AR15 for Hunting?

I have been shooting bolt action long range for some time now, but I am looking at getting an AR15 for hunting purposes. I will mainly be hunting jackrabbit, coyote, and small game. I want accuracy but I also want it to be light to carry around for some time. I was considering the stag arms model 3 because of the light weight and it seems like a good gun from what I read. Also, possibly a bushmaster although they are heavier than what I am looking for.
I am planning on 300 yrds and in and using a small scope or possibly a acog. Would like it to be no heavier than 7.5 lbs or so. Any suggestions? Companies I should look at? Thanks.

Re: AR15 for Hunting?

If u r buying new I suggest an Ambush rifle from Daniel Defense----ck em out! The brands I have that have had no issues are Colt, Rock River, Daniel Defense, Sabre Defense, and Raineer built---of course Larue and Noveske are on my short list---if u buy the Stag (sorry, no experience with Stag--read good stuff) u can have ARP here paint it for ya or buy a rrig from Scott at Specialized Dynamics and have ARP paint it---Nosler has some 60gr bullets that xpand on larger game as deer and hogs and Barnes bulleets also---Black Hills loads the Nosler 60gr if u don't reload---tons of varmint loads out there---enjoy

Re: AR15 for Hunting?

Id suggest building one. Use a pencil barrel with a light free float, such as a TROY, and toss a light carbine stock on it and your set.

If you must purchase, DD makes THIS which is pretty much what im suggesting you build, only considerably more expensive. With a small scope or Acog you should be just under your 7.5lb mark, and with Varmint Grenade ammo or similar, quite happy.

Also Smith makes THIS a little heavier, but a bit cheaper, plus its free floated.

If your really concerned about weight, take a look at the Carbon Fiber models from Bushmaster.

Re: AR15 for Hunting?

In Wisconsin, if hunting varmints or deer, you are required to have no more than a five shot magazine in the rifle to make it legal. It can not be a larger magazine with just five rounds in it either. Just something you might want to check into before you take the rifle into the field in your state of residence.

Re: AR15 for Hunting?

I am actually considering stag arms 3g. Seems like a good overall weapon for hunting, and match shooting which I do participate in. Larue also make a 3 gun which I am looking at. If anyone has any experience with these please let me know. Thanks for the DD reference they make some good stuff.

JFK - thanks for the heads up I will have to look into it. I live in CA so no doubt there is some insane rule about this. I probably have to single feed or just beat the animal with the buttstock so it won't be illegal.

Re: AR15 for Hunting?

I don't know what price range you have in mind, but I've been very happy with my Noveske Rogue Hunter. One of those uppers on a polymer lower would be a very light package although I have zero experience with polymer lowers to comment on how they hold up. If you're just using it for hunting might be just fine.

Re: AR15 for Hunting?

My goto AR15 is 18" Stealth from Larue. Reliability and accuracy totally satisfies me beyond my expectations. Next in line would be the Grendel for a wide variety of hunting applications.

Re: AR15 for Hunting?

Stag makes a great product. Lifetime warranty also. Customer Service is great also. Bad customer service is one of the reason`s I didn`t go with Rock River.

Re: AR15 for Hunting?

I've been hunting with my colt 6920 since I bought it several years ago. Generally, it's my hog/coyote/varmint rifle so I'm shooting at basically the same stuff you are. I've got an acog on it now, and that is perfect for me. Fast, accurate and deadly.

I expected it to function flawlessly from day one, which it has, but the thing that keeps surprising me is how accurately it shoots. When I started working up handloads, I was hoping for moa with varmint/target bullets. With the loads it likes, it easily does better than that and In not giving the rifle any help since I've got an acog and the stock trigger on it.
