Hi all,

I have a 6,5-284 and recently noticed that after some firings cartridges suddenly do not enter the chamber so headspace is so long that the bolt can´t close.

Some bore cleaning inclusive of the chamber area minimize this but I am wondering if there could be some kind of carbon ring in the chamber/throat that I need to get rid of.

Rifle has around 1200 rds through it.

I dont have a borescope and cant see anything that could be causing this.

The cartridges dimensions have not changed.

I´d appreciate your comments and suggestions,

Thanks

Re: carbon ring in chamber/troat area?

There probably is some carbon fowling just in front of the thoat that's not letting the rounds seat all the way. You can try sticking a bore brush til it just starts into the throat then spinning it to see if that gets rid of it. But in any event, at 1200 rounds that barrel is done or pretty close to it

Thanks.

Rifle is still shooting very well, I fear it is the carbon you mention. Have tried some solvents, it gets better but not well. Will try spinning the brush.

Get some of the Shooter's Choice black powder gel. Put some of the gel up into the throat and let it soak overnight. Scrub it out with an oversize brush. If it's the big rock mountain carbon ring you may have to repeat.

Thanks for the replies.

Have been brushing with a brass brush and got much better.

General Motors Top Engine Cleaner works well. About $15 a pint. Put a soaked patch in the area and let it work overnight. JMHO

I keep reading that everywhere. Problem is, GM doesn't make it anymore and hasn't for a number of years. I've called my local dealer that I've dealt with for 6 years and they run a locator (nationwide) and can't find me any.

Re: carbon ring in chamber/troat area?

It seems that an engine/injector cleaner might do.

HAve tried using SLip 2000, and then Butches bore shine with a new brass brush specially in the chamber/throat area.- seems it has worked but I think I will get one of those engine cleaners. I guess they won´t damage the barrel.

Thanks for the recommendations,

Re: carbon ring in chamber/troat area?

I tried some carb/injector cleaner over the weekend. It did the trick! A new bronze brush and a keeping it all saturated/flowing did great. Seemed we knocked the carbon out on no time.
