How many cases do you have?

As the title says how many cases do you keep around per caliber, and for what reason.

I understand if you shoot comps or do training you would need more than 100 rounds to shoot an outing but what would other reasons be, to keep the loading cycle down on cases and switch between batches? I personally have 200 cases for my 284 win but only shoot about 100 and outing but no more.

Re: How many cases do you have?

30-06 – 100 Cases
5.56/.223 – 200 cases
.40 S&W – 400+ cases
.45ACP – 500+ cases

I have not been reloading very long but I don’t really see any reason to limit the number of cases I have on hand and those numbers grow after most range visits. I figure if I ever get out of shooting and reloading (not likely) I can sell the brass to others reloaders or for scrap so why limit the amount I have. Hell I even have about 400 pieces of 9MM and 80 of 38 special just sitting around waiting to see if I ever buy a pistol in those calibers, I doubt I will ever get rid of them unless I come across someone that wants to trade for some brass that is more useful to me.

Re: How many cases do you have?

I've got 200 for my 6.5 Creedmoor

Had about the same for my .308 when I had it.

I also have about 3-400 .223 that I cycle through.

Then I have several thousand 9mm if I ever start reloading for it and almost 1k .40 thats just sitting around.

Re: How many cases do you have?

100 .308
300 .223
5000 9mm

and over 5000 of various range pickups in random calibers some that I would never own.

Re: How many cases do you have?

4500 5.56
4000 9mm
500 .308

2000 large rifle primers
6000 small rifle primers
4000 small pistol primers

12 lbs. H335
5 lbs. Varget
4 lbs. PowerPistol

6000 55 gr. Hornady SP .223 bullets
400 60 gr. Hornady V-max .223 bullets
3000 124 Gr. JHP Zero 9 mm bullets
400 150 & 165 gr. Hornady .308 bullets

It's cheaper to buy in bulk and I don't plan on ever running short or out.

Re: How many cases do you have?

too many to count but I keep my brass in 5 gallon buckets, so
308 is 2 buckets
223 is 8 buckets
9mm is 3 buckets
40 sw is 4 buckets
45 acp is 3 buckets
38 spl is 2 buckets
for the bolt action match stuff I try to keep at least 500 of each caliber.
gotta keep both Dillon 1050s fed somehow.

Re: How many cases do you have?

300 6.5 lapua
250 308 lapua
1000 .45

I shouldn't need any more lapua as it is good for 10+ reloads and I keep plenty of 45 for IDPA and USPSA. Can't always pick up what I shoot.

Re: How many cases do you have?

If you know how many cases you have you do not have enough.

Laffin', this...^^

Except I know I have 500, give or take, lapua .243's blown out, and of course loaded with 85 grain TSX's, for my .243AI......it's my favorite do-it-all rifle.

The rest, dunno....shit loads I guess.

Re: How many cases do you have?

I've always hated the thought of running out of ammo. If nothing else, call it a legacy for my heirs - something they may not be able to get in the future. I can't really justify it unless SHTF, but here's the stash of unloaded cases. I don't think I'll be needing much more.

Re: How many cases do you have?

I quit counting a long time ago for the ones I keep the most of. I have 223, 9mm, and 45's running out my ears. A couple friends of mine hang on to their empties for me and drop them off when they have a small bucket full.

I try to keep a few hundred for each caliber that I don't shoot much, but don't really count them until I start having to weed out cases for loose pockets, signs of case head issues, etc.

Re: How many cases do you have?

4 or 5 5-gal buckets unsorted, 2-3K common pistol and rifle calibers. Good deal on 3K of .40 inbound.

Re: How many cases do you have?

2-3 bucket's for every caliber I load for,and 2 garbage can's of 40 and 223 I don't need that go to the scrapper's yearly.

Re: How many cases do you have?

What about scatter guns? Got to have at least a commercial garbage bag full of 12Ga. hulls.

You keep as many around as you need. Simple common sense can be applied to your specific situation. If you need someone to tell you how many cases to keep in your possesion then that is what you should ask.

I can't believe so many were willing to tell a complete stranger the contents of their loading rooms, some even providing pictures, because someone simply asked them for an inventory, that was the question.

Re: How many cases do you have?

Heres my count:

200+ 300 wsm cases
145 7mm-08 cases
94 30-06 cases
45 270 win cases (dont load much for this one)
300+ 9mm cases (unfortunately no longer have a 9mm pistol)
150+ 12ga. Shotgun hulls

Funny part is, i only started reloading a month ago, i think this is a good number of brass to have accumulated over a month, all of it is fron firing factory ammunition.

Re: How many cases do you have?

If I get to less than 500 pieces of unfired Lapua brass for any given rifle caliber I have to visit Betty Ford for the weekend. Like many others..several thousand for the handgun calibers...

What really matters is primers...The brass will out last my rifle barrels with reasonable reloads. Primers are on component you cant do without.

Re: How many cases do you have?

For 9mm or .223/5.56 I get queasy when I fall below 10,000 pieces of brass waiting to be loaded.

.308 I can get by with a few less. 2,000 is the point where I start staying awake at night trying to figure out how to remedy the situation.

As for Loaded Ammo in those calibers? Sorry, Classified! Let's just say "More than enough".

Re: How many cases do you have?

20 -300wm brass.... To buy much more asap. But since lapua doesn't manu it anymore, I'm stuck in the water wondering what's a good replacement.
3500 loaded .223
2000 loaded 7.62x39
500 loaded 40 s&w
More misc....

Re: How many cases do you have?

For my accuracy rifles, 200 cases are adequate. I think I have between 100 and 400 for the rest. Handgun, for revolvers, probably less than 400/500. For pistols, more like a couple thousand.

I don't know how many pounds of powder I have on hand, but agree, the weak link is primers and I try to have at least 3 thousand of each on hand and a lot more LR since I use a lot more of them. My loading room has limited shelf space or maybe I would be hoarding more? Or, if Obama wins.

Re: How many cases do you have?

Not near enough......

2000 308's
5000 223's
2500 9mms
1500 45s
lots of misc calibers like 3006, 30-30, 270, 380, 38spcl, 357mag, 38super and on and on....

2-3k mixed 357sig (don't load 357)
500 mixed 38spl

Re: How many cases do you have?

All are +/-

440 .338 Lapua
200 .45-70
300 .300 Win Mag
6000 5.56
4000 7.62
1100 7.62 LC Match
600 .300 AAC
11000 9mm (may be overkill, I only have one pistol for it)
8000 .45 acp
400 .45 Colt
250 30-30
700 30-06
1500 10mm
300 .44 special
1200 .38 special
probably another 2-3000 unsorted

Re: How many cases do you have?

thousands for every caliber except .338 lm. For a few reasons...1. brass rarely gets cheaper 2. when brass wears out I dont want to rely upon the whims of the supply chain. 3. It keeps more time in between full prep or more than a sboulder bump.

For .338lm i have 800 pieces of once fired lapua. I figure that will last me a few barrels and I pickup some here and there as I find it for muchbetter than new prices. .338 isnt exactly a high volume shooter like .308 or smaller calibers. For semi autos i keep the most because sometimes you just lose a few pjeces of brass.

Re: How many cases do you have?

The ammunition Gorilla on my back is screaming in my ear "MORE". Even if you are only using 50 you should have lots more in reserve. I have enough to allow me to go shooting a few to a lot of times before having to reload.

Re: How many cases do you have?

.308 - 1200+
.223 - 2500+
300 AAC - 500-750~
thats all I care to keep and reload for. Although rarely do i touch anything but the 308 brass anymore.

Re: How many cases do you have?

I actually gave away 2 30 gallon trash cans full of various brass before my last PCS move. It weighed about a metric shit ton and I was close to my limit.

I purposely didn't pick up brass after I shot at matches to keep from collecting more. This month I couldn't help myself and policed up brass for 90 minutes after today's match. I just couldn't help myself! It's like leaving little golden nuggets on the ground.

Re: How many cases do you have?

45ACP : 2000
556/223 : 1000+ and counting
308 : 600-700
30-06 : 300-400
35 REM, 44 REM MAG, 7mm : 100 or so of each

Been shooting for only 5-6years but been saving brass for the last 2 years? New reloader here, just started this past winter. Finally got the perfect recipe(for me) for 45ACP and now working on 223/556 load for the AR15 build. After that, will work on 308 load for the MA-TEN build.

I just save the brass from factory ammo that I've bought throughout the years. My buddies also give me their brass since they don't load. I still have some factory ammo that I haven't shot yet. Only ammo I buy now are home defense rounds, 7.62x39 for the AK and any XM193 thats dirt cheap.
