OK
Im building me a 300 win mag long range rifle and i was wondering what would be the best twist rate. ill be shooting anywhere from 50 yards to 1000 yards.

Re: 300 win mag twist rate

From 175-220. Pick a combo you like that works for you in your rig and that does what you want.
How much BC do you want, how much speed, how hard do you want it to bang steel and how much recoil do you want? Oh and barrel life gets in the mix too.

Re: 300 win mag twist rate

all I know is i want to shoot berger match grade vld in 168 or 175 because i hunt. would those be a good bullet.

Re: 300 win mag twist rate

Out of a 300wm I would prefer a much heavier bullet. I know people are having awesome luck with the 208 amax but also up to 220-230 and sometimes heavier.

Re: 300 win mag twist rate

what about a 1-11or 1-12. what would be the best weights for those twist

Re: 300 win mag twist rate

The 300win is better with heavy pills.
If it were me and I set a 168ish weight "for hunting" I would go with a 7mm.

Material sciences are exploding with development. Heavier pills are flying faster with less pressure than ever and more so everyday.

When I was a kid everyone knew that the 190 was only for the 300win. Now I drive 175SMKs to 208 Amax in a 1-10 308.

Re: 300 win mag twist rate

1-10 is the recommended twist for the 230 Bergers as well. I wouldn't run anything less than a 200 grain bullet in a 300 WM for any reason. The benefits from heavy high BC bullets outweigh the velocity benefits of the lighter bullets, especially when you plan to deliver maximum energy and momentum to drive through your target downrange. Another important aspect is wind resistance. The high BC heavies deflect far less than lighter bullets.

Re: 300 win mag twist rate

I've used 190 SMK in my 300WM with a 30" 1-10 Kreiger for years and it was extremely accurate. However in an identical rifle my buddy has the same round sucked compared to my barrel. We ran 210 Berger's in his and those worked better. I definitely agree with trying a few types out. It is time consuming if you have to work up a load in several types of bullets though, but it's an excuse to shoot more.

Disagreed. It depends on the application. For target/competition your are correct, but for hunting applications you are wrong. I've used a 300 WM for hunting and found 165 to 180 gr. to work best. I don't shoot at game beyond maybe 400 to 450 yards maximum, and even then the conditions must be perfect before I consider breaking the shot. At normal maximum range you cannot prove to me that a relatively faster and lighter bullet will not shoot flatter than your heavy's, assuming equivalent load accuracy. I used 150's with great success too.

Re: 300 win mag twist rate

I shoot anything between 180-220 out of my 1-10". I agree with Brent about taking advantage of the better BC's of heavier projectiles

Re: 300 win mag twist rate

For 1-10" twist rate at long range Sierra recommends a 210g SMK as thier "specialty bullet"

Re: 300 win mag twist rate

I Understand that the heavier bullets will be better for long range but im wanting to shoot 150 to 168 grain bullets cuz i don't want too big of a bullet because im going to be shooting whitetail deer. so how accurate will a 150 to 168 bullet be as in moa.

Re: 300 win mag twist rate

I use a 1-10 twist with a 200 grain accubond for hunting, and a 210 grain SMK for match shooting in all my 30 cal. rifles.

good luck,

Re: 300 win mag twist rate

If you want to be set on the lighter rounds why not stick with a .308? Save the money on the brass and powder. That weight bullet is perfect for the. 308 and are doing quite well for long distance accuracy nowadays. IMO I can't see shooting light in a 300WM especially if you're only worried about a 1000 yard gun. Just my 2¢…
