Good News, they punished another one! I guess we need more Assistant U.S. Attorneys with military service.

A man who falsely claimed a chestful of military medals was sentenced to a year in prison and was ordered to repay $11,098 in veterans benefits he shouldn't have received.

Thomas Barnhart, 59, had 21 years of legitimate Navy and Coast Guard service, including offshore duty in Vietnam. But starting in 1979, he began inflating his experience in claims for promotions and benefits, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jake Jacobsen told U.S. District Judge James Turk today in Roanoke.

Among Barnhart's lies, according to the prosecutor: he was a Navy Seal, he received elite low-altitude parachute training, he received five Purple Hearts, three Bronze Stars, two Silver Stars and a Vietnamese medal of honor. He also falsely claimed that a downed U.S. helicopter pilot died in his arms and that he saw other U.S. soldiers die around him.

Jacobsen, a veteran of the current Iraq war, called Barnhart's conduct "repugnant."

Barnhart wept in court and said he lied because neither the Navy nor the U.S. public appreciated his real service.

"I just can't punish myself enough," he sobbed. "Every day I ask forgiveness."

I wish he could have been proud of his own service to this great nation of ours. It's a shame to see this happen. Also (separate thought), I really hate it when somebody who has never served starts to make claims they did.

What a freek.To live that lie is awefull especially making up stories about a solider died in his arms.The guy served he should of been proud of that service.I remember this guy at a bar once claming to be a seal and was eating glass to prove how crazy he was.I wasn't impressed by his parlor tricks or loud mouth I had to leave and drink elsewhere.

I met a guy that lived back in the swamp behind my house who claimed to be a Vietnam vet. I would listen to him talk abt his adventures, through time and seeing him at many parties the truth came out. At one party he was a spec 5 at another he was a Lt. through the years he promoted him self to a Major. One night i was playing pool with some guys from the Vietnam Vets motorcycle club and in walks this guy he starts his shit and pointed at me and said he was there look at his eyes he has that 500 yard stare. That did it i no i was never over there i was in the USMM. i got into his face and confronted him abt all his lies and told him just how i felt abt him. He turned around only to see the vets right behind him and they were asking him question's that he could not answer. All of us knew what was abt to go down and we all left except for this fellow and the vet's. The word got to me the next day that he fell down some stairs and that's how he was injured. At least that's what he wrote down on some paper. He spent 3 weeks in the hospital maybe 4. After that we never saw or herd from him again. I once herd a man on tv tell another man that if you are going to tell a lie you have to tell it the same way every time. this guy didn't.

They exist. They can get the BP up, but in the end, it's not worth dirtying your hands on one.

I've done some time in various elected offices in a few Veterans organizations, and this is a common refrain. There was a time when it got my motor running, but I've moved on past that stuff. Younger guys pick up the slack now.

Fake army ranger, member iraq Veterans Against the War. Macbeth never made it out of training at Fort Benning, Georgia. The Army kicked him out after six weeks due to his "entry level performance and conduct." Currently facing charges of falsifying his records to bolster Anti-War cliams.

Bugs the hell outta me.
We had a guy come to town, with his wife, who had gotten a transfer with the Forest Service.
He interviewed for and was offered a job with our county and the neighboring county for community development. He was interviewed by the local paper and mentioned that he was a SEAL.
Just for the hell of it, I obtained his full name, and sent it in to that group that outs wannabe Navy Seals, and Rangers and PJ's.
He wasn't in the service let a lone a Navy SEAL. I referred the guys who did the research to the County commissioner.
The guy tried to obfuscate a bit, but eventually he resigned without starting the job.
I hate these assholes.

This guy did 6 weeks In basic and still doesn't know how to wear a uniform or salute. Black shirt, the beret is on wrong, and that's how the Marines roll their sleeves, not the Army. The blouse top is to large too and the rank is to high on the collar, 1" not 1 1/2". BP to high must move on.
