The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

It is,
We did, we started with the VRPIC / HRPIC and worked it from there. I couldn't be happier with the finished product. I'll be chambering my ASC rifle hopefully Thurs. Can't wait to get it to the range and some trigger time.

Is there a possible timeline for us lefties?

Oh, you meant a timeline for the actions, not for lefties. Nevermind.

The Salt bath nitride / Melonite is so hard in fact that all machining should be done before the process. What this does is help the hardened surfaces, like the bolt and action, run smoother together with less friction and chance of gulling if ran dry. The black is a bi-product of the process and even if worn off - the harder surface underneath still carries the properties you are looking for.

It is a very expensive process exspecially when we did everything, including the firing pin, cocking piece, shroud ect. But the field benifits outway the cost.

Jamie,

How well does melonite reduce the need for lubrication? Ionbond, although not as tough as melonite, appears to eliminate need for oil as the coating absorbs oil during an initial overnight oil soak. Oil is no longer needed, so eliminating it reduces cleaning needs as oil is not soaking up dirt. Is melonite similar, or do you still need oil?

Could you put ionbond over melonite?

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

Just got the barrel in, Kreiger .338 1-9 and the trigger. Waiting on the chassis and the action.

I'm wondering how the melonite would look next to a bead blasted SS barrel?

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

Thanks All,
Mac619 - Short Actions are $1485 and Longs $1535.00

c1steve - The Melonite I think will run great for a long time. Although it does not absorb some oil like Ionbond. It hardens the steel making them really smooth and allowing you to wipe clean and run dry without gulling if you had to. If you use an grease lube like http://www.mil-comm.com that you can apply, allow to absorb and then wipe dry - even better.

I just finished up ASC and ran the rifle with no issues for three days with no cleaning. Ran smooth and fast even after getting three days of dust and dirt (provided by the muzzle brakes). : ) Last drill of the day was single loaded shots / 200 yards and 20 seconds - go 8 rounds off and 7 hits. Could lift the bolt and run it with two fingers.

Here's a couple pics of the build in .260 - she was 5 days old when we left and just a couple range trips to work out a load. She has 380 rounds through her now.

ASC Match Paster and stesser drill. Target 36 - Drilled the paster and put 4 of the 5 rounds right in there on the index card. Dropped the second round low getting in a hurry but slowed back down and she hammered the rest home.

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

Beautiful gun. Is that the natural finish on the action, or has it been coated? Can the bolt be ceracoated, or are the tolerances too tight in the action?

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

The action and bolt were left in the melonite finish. The barrel was Cerakoted graphite black. I would leave the bolt alone - if you must coat it I would probably do IonBond in Black or Dark Earth.

The action can be coated. I would go real thin in the action and probably protect the lock up areas with a jig or mask them off to keep them from being coated.

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

It matches really well. I thought it was all cerakoted. The finish on the actions almost looks glossy in the first few pics but it is obviously not when looking at the complete build.

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

I got to handle this action at ASC this past weekend, it is a great looking action and is smooth as butter. I hope to get my hands on one in the future for a build.

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

So with the extractor in the lug like that can you mount a scope low on a wsm action and get the brass to clear without hitting the scope or windage turret? I've had problems with a custom action with the m16 style extractor and a low scope mount.

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

I saw one at ASC: The quality is excellent and the bolt is smooth. I like the low -20 base, too.

It would be an advantage if they offered it with either a shorter bolt handle or a swept-back bolt handle as well.

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

Thanks guys,
The extractor is not angled up like an Mini-M16. It is dirictly towards the port throwing the brass staight out the side - the .260 wasn't hitting the windage knob at all.

The handles are threaded and we have medium and small knobs that you can put on instead. For a hunting rifle I would probably go with the medium knobs or even the small. I'll get some pics up later if I can.

Jamie

I want mine in .308 and all cerakoted tan with tan AICS

now back to working OT to pay for it.

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

Thanks for the reply. I like a low mounted scope but don't like brass hitting the windage knob.

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

my action works fine just as it came from bat, no fancy coatings needed. here is a pic

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

Looks good and I would expect anything coming from Bat to work fine. The coating really isn't a coating even though it does turn the parts black. It surface hardens the parts so there is less chance of gulling and helps them run really, really smooth. It is also done through Bat before it is shipped.

Diddo. Ive been using BAT actions on my rifles for years, right from BAT. The HR and VR Repeaters. Ive had them in both stainless, and Cerakote. They work flawless as is.

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

I again agree, all of Bat's stuff works great, but have you tried one that has been Melonited yet? Bat will even tell you that with melonite they will work smooother - and Bats run smooth already, so as hard as it is to believe, it will make them even smoother.

So unless you have tried and ran both - you honestly do not know what you are missing. And you are missing something. Has nothing to do with them working flawless! Also, it is a process they can do to any of their actions. You just have to pay a little extra for it.

Lastly, The actions are SS and the bolts CM. This and the melonite is a one two punch that will help prevent gulling if the acions are wiped clean and ran dry. Try cleaning all the oil completely off your SS Bolt/Action combo and run it dry and see how long is lasts before they start to gull. Some things do have a purpose although it might not be obvious at first.

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

How compatible is the Melonite process with the overall heat treatment and stress relief of the action?

As I understand it, the melonite process is hotter than standard heat treat so something would have to be done to treat the action?

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

As far as I know, there is no heat treating after the process, they are cleaned/polished and assembled. Same goes for chambered barrels that are sent in. No heat treat afterwards. If you are really concerned call Daryle at BAT Machine and talk with him about it and I am sure he would go over the details with you.

JamieD

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

I'm not worried, just always wondered how the original heat treat of the metal would hold up during and after the Melonite process.

My understanding of heat treatment is limited...so maybe I'm missing it but it seems like with the higher temp of the nitride, it would nullify the original heat treatment and possibly leave the action in a modified state or hardness throughout vs the original surface/interior strength design.

Probably a topic for another thread.

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

I'm sure that if there was a hint of issue or doubt that BAT would certainly address. They are that meticulous. You could always call Daryle and ask, I am sure he would take the time to go into detail with you.

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

That rifle looks awesome Jamie. Are these actions going to be a regularly stocked item?

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

Thanks,
I have a constant supply coming in and hope to have them being a regular in stock item readily available.

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

Dangit, I just ordered a Stiller TAC-338. I even did some searching here on actions, but missed this thread. I know its too late at this point, but you must have considered features, strengths and weaknesses of competitors actions before deciding to go this route. I know you outlined some of the features you wanted, but I would love to hear some of your thinking in comparing the Stiller tactical line, the badger M2008 and why you ended up building your own instead of going with one of those. I am hoping this will help edumacate me for the next build (like lays potatoe chips I hear, so I know there is going to be another in my future).

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

The BAT action has always been my favorite. There is nothing wrong with any of the actions you listed. I just felt this was a better suited product for what I was looking for personally. Please feel free to call if you have any questions I would be more than glad to take some time talking with you on the phone.

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

I recently finished a .308 build on a BAT Tactical action for a customer. The first 5 shots on paper were .25" with Black Hills 175gr match ammo. I have never felt an action as smooth, slick, and well put together. The T-slot extractor makes it nice to not have to worry about windeage knobs getting in the way. So far it seems to be a shooter and a solid platform. I'm hoping the owner will pop in and give his own thoughts on the action.

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

Jamie,

Do you actions have the same specs (recoil lug position, overall length, etc...) as the BAT HRPIC action??

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

No they do not accept AW Mags. They will fit Badger and PT&G M5's and ADD/BDL. Trying to keep them as universal as possible.

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

Jamie, been following this thread a bit, but not too sure if this has been asked. I have been intrigued about melonited barrels. Will there be any issues with running a melonited barrel on the melonited action?

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

Got a chance to play with one yesterday. Truly a work of art. You can run it as fast as a well worn 700...locks up like a bank vault...and opens back up with a swipe of your pinky. Impressive as hell.

Re: The new Bat Tactical Actions (BTA) just arrived!

Backspace,
I don't think there will be an issue at all. To be safe you could contact Bat Machine and ask for Darrel just to double check.

19scout77,
Thanks and I'm glad you like it. It never gets old playing with these actions in amazement on how smooth they are : )
