Bought this rifle as a bolt rifle with plans on modding it to a tack driver in the future, long road I know.

My concern is, when I was testing to see how it fed both single and through the magazine, I found that when pushing the bolt forward quickly it scrapes up part of the bullet as well as the brass. Pushing it in slowly doesn't have this effect. Is this abnormal/ a problem? Will small scrapes in my bullets' jackets affect accuracy? Right now my plan of action is just to load slowly lol

Re: New Rem 700 SPS Tac

Have you shot the rifle yet? If not, shoot it first to make sure there actually is a problem before trying to find a solution.

Although you are apparently cycling rounds through the rifle, it sounds like you haven't fired it yet, since you haven't made any comments regarding observed inaccuracy.

On another note, I've never had problems with feeding rounds out of the magazine on either of the SPS Tac rifles I've had; although my .223 had a hard time feeding rounds unless they were being fed from the mag.

Re: New Rem 700 SPS Tac

Are you asking if the bolt sliding over the rounds in the mag and scratching them is a problem? Unless the bolt has a nasty burr its most likely for all intents cosmetic.
If you mean the round being fed is being scratched it is again probably just cosmetic.
If something is gouging visible slivers of brass or copper from your rounds something is wrong.

Re: New Rem 700 SPS Tac

My Varmint does that. Leaves a nice little gold streak on the bottom of my bolt (EDIT: after a day of shooting). I haven't noticed any marks on the brass though and no accuracy difference between mag fed and single fed rounds. My new Stiller DBM just arrived today so I'll report on it as soon as I get it in. The design is such that the user can inlet fairly easily so hopefully I'll have it in the stock tonight.

Re: New Rem 700 SPS Tac

I had the same problem with mine. The problem is that the spring in the DBM is weak and it doesnt have enough pressure to push the rounds up to load properly thus causing the bolt to scrape the cartridge. Once I changed to an AICS I don't have the problem anymore. Get rid of the factory stock and you won't have this happen anymore. Doesnt have to be an AICS either. Anything is better than the factory stock and DBM it came with.

Re: New Rem 700 SPS Tac

SPS Tac doesn't come with DBM.

Its probably just sharp corners on the magbox and feed ramp. Just run a bunch of rounds through it and itll work itself out.

Re: New Rem 700 SPS Tac

Thanks for the replies all, it's not the bolt scratching the bullet/brass, it's something between the mag and the point at which the bullet enters the barrel. It seems like it goes down from the tip of the bullet to 3/4 of the brass itself so it's probably something on the feed ramp catching the metal, it may well work itself out as rrflyer suggested. I'll shoot it for a while as soon as I get my optic mounted and hopefully that'll help.

You're right, my bad, I couldn't for the life of me think of what its called other than a POS, lol. Anyway, the spring is weak and it wasn't pushing the rounds high enough for the bolt to engage the rounds so the bolt would constantly scrape along the top almost midway up the bullet.

Re: New Rem 700 SPS Tac

I'm sure it's of little concern to anyone, but follow up post:

After doing a lot of practice with snap caps and cycling something like 60 rounds with the bolt, the scraping that was affecting my shells and bullets as they were chambered has been reduced if not wholly eliminated. It seems logical that there was a little bit of a sharp edge on something that the bullet and the casing were caught on on their way to the chamber that has since worn down. If you've having this issue, snap caps are probably best and I'd bet you they're what really fixed it for me as they are made of harder metal and have ridges that would sort of file down the overly sharp edge in question.

Again, thanks for the responses and hopefully this can help someone else with this issue in the future.
