In the early stages of a 300 win mag build. My smith recommends Rock barrels. I do not know much about them. Looking for first hand knowledge on them. Thanks for the replys.

Re: Rock Creek barrels

Top shelf barrels, have no hesitations.

If you trust the smith, don't argue with his barrel choice, that way if the rifle doesn't shoot he can't blame you for not using the parts he recommended.

If you don't trust the smith, then find a new one.

Re: Rock Creek barrels

While Rock has never been my barrel of choice all rifles I've built using them were drills. I had some pictures of groups a client in AZ sent me a few years back. Three different bullets, two different powder types, the agg for 15 shots (5-3 shot groups) was in the .080"s

Rock Creek barrels do shoot.

.080"?

Re: Rock Creek barrels

Rocks are very nice. Faster then most barrels it seems. All the rock barrels I've seen shoot lights out, worry not if you get one.

Yea, .080"

Re: Rock Creek barrels

What caliber if I may inquire?

No doubt Rock barrels will shoot, They built my 338 Federal barrel and its excellent.

I also am a huge fan of Bartlein and Brux.

Re: Rock Creek barrels

I have a Rock Creek in .30-06 and have been very impressed so far. Accuracy is better than me and it seems to get a little more speed with my standard loads.

I would have another without any hesitation.

Re: Rock Creek barrels

308 with 155 Scenars, 155 Bergers & 175 SMK's with Varget & H4895 in Lapua Brass.

Remington receiver, A5 McMillan

Now, as good as it shot, this isnt the norm. I'm sure the rifle/shooter doesnt do this everytime they go to the range.

Re: Rock Creek barrels

I have 3 Rock Creek barrels. One in .260Rem, and two in .308Win. They all shoot lights out. As good or better than my Bartlein and Krieger barrels, they also clean up easy.

Re: Rock Creek barrels

You might want to try Benchmark,Brux, or Bartlein. The 3 B`s, can`t go wrong with either.

Re: Rock Creek barrels

Did mike rock work for obermeyer? I think I remember my gunsmith telling me that. I just got a rock barrel m40 contour 1:9twist for my next build, debating on 300 wm or 300 norma still.

Re: Rock Creek barrels

I believe he did for a time, I seem to remeber reading that here or somewhere else.

Re: Rock Creek barrels

Having shot 5 National records using Rock Creek bbl's, don't believe I will be using anything else anytime soon. I am very pleased with them.

Re: Rock Creek barrels

Thank you for the replys gentlemen. I have a very good smith, 'I' just had not heard much about Rock barrels. I personally only have experience with Douglas, Shilen & Kreiger. Sounds like I'll be pleased.

Re: Rock Creek barrels

I have a 300WSM with a Rock barrel and its a hammer. No worries with a Rock barrel.

Re: Rock Creek barrels

You have more to be concerned about with your smith than with ROck Creek as they have a long term positive track record.

I just received 2 more of their barrels this week; that should give you a hint of my thoughts on them.

Re: Rock Creek barrels

Another vote for Rock. I've got one in 6.5x284. You will not be disappointed. Great product and good people.

Re: Rock Creek barrels

I order all my oddball stuff thru them. I asked them for a gain twist 223 barrel and they said no problem! Most of the other barrel makers said they couldn't do gain twist and would not even offer it in the future.

Re: Rock Creek barrels

Rock barrels are outstanding. We've built many rifles with Rock Creek barrels and we've had nothing but excellent performance from all of them. Use with confidence.

Rock Creek cut rifled barrels just plain shoot.

Re: Rock Creek barrels

I have one on order myself and just called RC today with a couple of questions. Mike Rock answered the phone himself and we hung up only 40 minutes later. He shared thoughts on metals, metalurgy, machining techniques, nitriding, barrel history, politics, and more. Nice guy with a wealth of knowledge. He started in metalurgy and actually got started with barrels many, many years ago when Boots Obermeyer had a problem with some bad metal that he wanted metalurgical analysis on. Mike said Boots wouldn't let him touch a machine but shared with him a wealth of information.
