Sako TRG / KRG Whiskey 3 custom comb

While I’m busy waiting for my barrel to come back with a Badger brake installed, I figured it was time to mess with perfection. The KRG folding stock actually is perfection, but I wanted a better fitting comb, and, can't leave well enough alone.

The original TRG comb fits me just right, so I glued then shaped some 1/4” ABS into a fair replica. I then hand tapped a series of holes in some 5/8” SQ 6061 aluminum bar stock and threaded some 5/16” rod to make posts and anchors.

After cutting a 3/4” wide x 5/8” deep mortise in the bottom of the comb, I set and anchored the bar stock with JB Weld. Three coats of Krylon later, you can still see the lines from the crappy glue job I did on the ABS. I may cover the whole thing with a 1/8” Cheek Eez pad from No-Kick, mostly to make it less slippery. Last on the list is figuring out how to black out the posts. Maybe some heat shrink mat'l.

Approx cost for materials: $20
Estimated value of time: $600 (hand-tapping aluminum sucks!)
Estimated (and exaggerated) value of new comb: $35
Value of lessons learned: $585

Re: Sako TRG / KRG Custom comb

Will your bolt release with it in place?

A+ Mod Project, bro. I'm not so talented...

Re: Sako TRG / KRG Custom comb

In this position, the comb prevents complete removal of the bolt. Even so, the KRG folder is great in that you can remove the bolt either by lowering/removing the comb, or, by folding the butt stock out of the way. In either scenario, it's easier and faster than the steps you go through with the OEM Sako stock.

Now that is awesome!

By the way we do have a new cheekpiece in testing that we hope to have as an option later this year. It should be more comfy, but non-ambi, and will have lateral adjustment, as it stands now.

If you put on that pad, let us all know how you like it.

You are much too kind. What's awesome is the KRG folder. The engineering is phenomenal: simple, sturdy, and spot on functional. It's a lot harder to get to simple than most people think. The mechanisms that lock it in place are robust and solid. I am in awe at how you were able to get the tolerances that close, to allow ease of rotation, yet still lock up so solidly. Bravo to you sir!

Re: Sako TRG / KRG Custom comb

I just finished putting together my new stick. I have about 150 rounds through it so far and plan on hitting the range again today. My scope is dialed in and I've been playing with the KRG stock to get it just right. This stock is great but there are a couple things I would change. A comfy cheek rest would be really cool. I weld my cheek pretty solid and if you hit the range several days in a row I start to feel it. The hole for front action screw could be a little bigger so I don't need to take the forend off to get the screw out. Also the Allen wrench on my torque driver is not long enough to reach it. I had to modify a wrench that will work with my torque driver. Not a big deal but I see no down side to opening the hole up a bit. The trigger well could also be a little wider to fit a Jewell trigger. The Jewell is the best trigger on the market and it should drop in, IMO. I also replaced the set screw, that takes the wobble out of the adjustable LOP, with a M5x.8x11mm thumb screw. This should come with the stock. I had to buy 5 and only need one. If you want one PM me. There also needs to be a way to run a flush cup swivel on the sides of the forend but I believe KRG is working on something.

This is a great stock and as with anything fairly new little changes here and there will make it even better. I'm getting sub .5moa 10 rnd groups so far and think its capable of even better when I get the stock set up just right for me.

A lot of the guys at the range are coming by to check this thing out. A few of them have fired it. Everyone is interested in it.

OP: Just rub some Aluma-Black on those posts. If you want to send it my way I can spray it with KG flat black for free and get it back in the mail the same day. I'll also send you a thumbscrew if you want.

Here's some crap cell phone pics of my new stick.

Re: Sako TRG / KRG Custom comb

Thanks for the offer on the KG flat black, and thumbscrew. I ended up using some black heat shrink tubing which works for now. Your rifle is looking good! I initially had my bipod set up like yours, but now use the Accu-Shot Atlas TRG bracket that mounts in front of the forend. The extra length from bag to bipod, and getting the barrel closer to the pivot point help with overall stability. The TRG bracket can also be used to put a flush cup mount on the side.

Re: Sako TRG / KRG Custom comb

Hey D, that is some very nice work... I have been putting of doing something similar to a Savage 12 Palma stock to improve the ergo's. Nice idea and thanks for the pics.

I'd be in for a thumb screw, I have a stock inbound and I would like as solid a setup as possible. PM Sent.

Re: Sako TRG / KRG Whiskey 3 custom comb

I really like the cheek piece you did... that sir would be something I'd want when I get a KRG stock on my TRG-22! It looks like it would preserve my current cheek weld from the Stock stock....

Does the TRG bracket fit the Rem 700 model? Got any pics of it with the sling mount?

My first range day with the rifle required quite a bit of time getting the butt-stock just right. I only keep a very light grip on it with my right hand with my thumb up. I keep my left hand on my bag to squeeze it. The damn rifle was doing wheelies until I got it just right. I just tore it all down for some paint. Hopefully I'll get it back together by the weekend and I'll post some glamour shots.

Re: Sako TRG / KRG Custom comb

I have heard that the TRG bracket fits the Whiskey 3 chassis. You can check it out more closely through this thread.. TRG Bracket Thread

I don't have the flush cup mount on my rig yet, and have not seen a pic, but the TRG bracket attaches securely to the chassis, and you can mount a pic rail at 3 or 9 on the TRG bracket. On a pic rail, of course, you can mount a flush cup bracket. There may be a simpler way to do this, but I haven't finished researching it yet.

Anyone else done a flush cup on the side of an Accu-Shot Atlas TRG bracket? Pics?

Re: Sako TRG / KRG Custom comb

D.Draig, we put a lot of effort into the chassis, so we're glad to hear you like it. We feel that it is good but not perfect, and we're working all the time to improve it.

The Atlas mount does in fact fit the W3C, depending on your barrel diameter.

We have a some great mounting options and accessories coming but I don't want to give away too much now. Some we've mentioned like the flush mount QD plate but there's other stuff as well.

Re: Sako TRG / KRG Custom comb

Sounds good. I am really interested to see what you come out with on the comb with lateral adjustment. I considered it as I cobbled together the comb shown above, but realized it was just too far beyond my shop skills. I might have been able to make one that worked, but it would have weighed at least 7lbs and required a hand crank.

Re: Sako TRG / KRG Custom comb

I would like to see a laterally adjustable comb for the w3 too. I recently received my chassis and am impressed by the look and feel of it, but wonder if a thinner or adjustable might not fit me better. If anyone has a thinner gen I cheekpiece they don't want please pm me. Can't wait to shoot this thing.
