I am thinking about trying to build a rig similar to the Ruger gunsite setup. I like the ruger set up, but have been wondering about the accuracy and I am looking for some input as to whether There could be a better setup built on the Ruger Pre 64 action still with the 16-18" barrel. I have read that the best people are getting out of these rifles is 1.5moa. This is going to be a field/range toy and would like to shoot better than 1.5

thought process is as follows:
ruger pre 64 action
16-18" rock 5r barrel
timney trigger
badger or CDI bottom metal
manner stock ( not sure being that this would be a field gun) open to other options. I am also going to try to get hands on a few different ones to check feel.

I am new to this and I am looking to use the knowledge that is around on here for Input. Or if there is someone that builds something similar to this please let me know. Thanks in advance and I look forward to everyones input.

Re: Ruger Gunsite Project

Finding smiths to work at that level on a Ruger may prove more difficult that you think. Neither CDI nor Badger make any bottom metal for the Ruger so you would need to go a different route than that. I don't see a Ruger stock that Manner's lists either.

I would look into a Savage as listed above. Or maybe even look at a Remington or Howa. You'll probably end up saving mone in the long run.

Here is an older link on working on Ruger's:

Re: Ruger Gunsite Project

Really wanted a ruger, ended up with a steyr elite and a savage scout.

Theres some nice takeoff's of what your looking for. The best deal would be scrap the ruger action you have to put into a Rem or savage action for compatibility issues... Savage is the best bet, I have next to nothing in the savage scout compared to what I paid for the Steyr. I purchased it for the action to use on a DIY 243 build.

Re: Ruger Gunsite Project

Would a Mauser action serve the purpose better? I appreciate the input. I guess I forgot to portray that I have an objective in mind. Just trying to figure out the best way to get to a similar rifle to the ruger gunsite with better accuracy and something short of 18" barrel.

Re: Ruger Gunsite Project

not a lot of ruger or mauser support... there is enough for the Win/FN to get your project done... but Rem or Sav are your best choices

Re: Ruger Gunsite Project

After the education above and batting this around. I am now thinking about going with the savage 10 action. Manners MCS-TA with CDI bottom metal. Rock 5r cut to 16 threaded with a break to be determined. Should make for an over length of close to 18"

The black ops site was awesome. Would love a Kukri but that is a lot of cash. This may end up as my poor boys version

Re: Ruger Gunsite Project

start w/ the 10 hog hunter... cut that bbl... it'll shoot... might as well run it until it's shot out... add the Manners and a CDI....rock that whore

Re: Ruger Gunsite Project

You can do this with a 700 if wanting that platform. Adding a DBM would be easy on it.

I may do one on a 70 platform one day. I had a local smith do this for me after I went over my idea's

Re: Ruger Gunsite Project

I had an early production GSR. All I did to it was free float and glass bead the barrel and action. Then fitted it with an XS Sights rail and Trijicon 1.25-4x Accupoint. It shot sub moa with Federal 168gr GMMM, Federal Premium 165gr Trophy Bonded and 165 Gamekings and also Winchester Supreme 168gr Bal-tips. My hand loads with 168gr Sierria's over Varget were slightly better.

You will have to spend a lot of money to really top that performance by a significant amount.

The biggest problem with the forward mounted scopes is glare early and late in the day. Great idea on the range, not so good in the field.

Re: Ruger Gunsite Project

The Winchester M70 or FN actions are much better than the Ruger for this application. I have had a couple of the Rugers, no longer. I now own 2 winchesters and an FN. No comparison.

Re: Ruger Gunsite Project

Thanks all for the input. Lot of pictures of great looking rigs. Mad a noob feel welcome. Will post later when I sort out my thoughts and start a build.
