I shot my new 260 for the first time today. Stiller Tac-30 action, Kreiger 24" 1-8.5 Remington varmint taper modified, Manners MCS-T stock, and had PTG grind a reamer to my spec. Had the rifle set up to shoot the 123gr SMK at mag length and leave approx 0.020" jump to the lands. .298" neck to use the Lapua brass. 42.0gr H4350 yielded fantastic accuracy. 5-shot group that measured 0.340". The velocity was 2785fps. At 42.5gr the group opened up and showed high pressure. Switched to H4831SC, shot a .220" 5 shot group with 45gr charge but it also showed high pressure sign so I don't want to shoot it. The velocity was 2700fps. I had this rifle built with expectations of shooting 2900fps +. Accuracy is phenominal but velocity sucks. Is this the kind of velocity ya'll are getting with 24" bbls?

Re: Shot 260 for first time today

Lapua brass, 42 grains of H4350 gives me 2,730 fps.

With RP brass and 43.5 grains I get 2,840.

Both loads shoot in dots with 139 Scenars and CCIBR2's, 26" Bartlein 5r.

Re: Shot 260 for first time today

tag this, cause i doing a build and would likr to know also.

Re: Shot 260 for first time today

A brand new rifle often takes 75 to 150 rounds before you will see the actual velocity. When my Bartelin was brand new, it was running 120 fps slower than all loads posted with the same charge. 100 rounds later, I was running what I expected. Give it some time and shooting, it will come in. The accuracy remained with the same charge, only it got faster.

My experince exactly except I use win primers same barrel same length.

Re: Shot 260 for first time today

The velocity your getting with a 24" barrel is about right. Even with a 30" tube you can't get 2900 fps. My AR-10 has a 26" barrel on it was made by Scott Medesha and the chamber is set up to be able to load 142's at mag length. I can run them with 45gr of H4831SC in .243 win brass necked up and get around 2720fps. I also run the same load in LC 07 LR brass necked down and velocity is slightly higher around 2760fps. My barrel was a Kreiger and it took about 300 rounds till it really started shooting was during a course match at 300 rapids. First group was good, second string I looked and was like HELLO.....

The name of the game is accuracy, no matter how fast you shoot a bullet you still have to read the wind. Your load of 123's will take the wind better than .308 with 175's.

Re: Shot 260 for first time today

You might have some luck with IMR 4064 with the 123 SMK when your rifle is broke in.

Re: Shot 260 for first time today

The OP is trying to get 2900fps with 123gr bullets, which should be easily doable in a 24" barrel.

I'm very surprised 42.5gr H4350 caused pressure signs; I shot up to 45.4gr H4350 with a 123gr A-Max this past weekend and didn't experience any pressure signs in 1x fired, FL sized Lapua brass with CCI-200 primers.

Did you size your virgin Lapua brass (either neck or FL) before loading and shooting? First outing I did with new Lapua brass showed all kinds of pressure due to neck tension of out-of-box brass being way too high, but after running the rest of my new brass through a FL die never saw anything like that again.

Try 39.3gr Varget; it should get you 2900fps in that 24" barrel.

Re: Shot 260 for first time today

This is not true. I got 2900+ with 142gr SMKs and H4350 in a 26in barrel.<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: Heman</div><div class="ubbcode-body">The velocity your getting with a 24" barrel is about right. Re: Shot 260 for first time today

Will give Varget a try. I just didn't have a 260 built to shoot the 123's at basically the 142 velocity. Speed aint everthing, but I don't think asking for 2900 is too much. We will see.

Re: Shot 260 for first time today

My 260 is a Defiance Machine Defender action, Obermeyer 27 inch 1-8.87 twist 5R barrel with a comp on the end, Manners stock.

140 gn Nosler custom competition
43.5 of H4350
CCI BR2 primer
Winchester 7mm-08 cases necked to 6.5 and match prepped
(uniform primer pockets, de-burr and uniform flash holes, trim etc)

this load gives me 2834 FPS with no pressure signs at all..primer still has rounded edge

123 Scenar
44 grains of H4350
CCI BR2
same brass as above
2952 FPS and again no pressure signs at all.
even loads with a little more powder still didn't show any pressure signs, but accuracy fell off a bit. So I felt this was plenty of velocity, and I prefer not straining my rifle or cases for a small gain in velocity...especially when accuracy falls off.
