Awaiting the arrival of a Sako m995 30-06 I've bought.

My plans are to enjoy the 30-06 for a little while as I save my pennies, then switch the barrel out to either a 243 or 260.

I curious if there are others out there who have done this and if you have any recommendations for me?

Thank you very much

Re: Sako M995

You'll love the action. About as smooth as you can possibly get. Don't plan on replacing the stock without shelling out some coin. You can get another McM but you have to also buy the bottom metal. I find the factory McM stocks to be very comfortable for me. I have 2 friends that have both rebarreled theirs to .257 STW. If you want a 7 Mag barrel, I'm pretty sure I have one. You definitely won't have to worry about seating depths if you rebarrel to a short action cartridge like you're planning.

Re: Sako M995

Great Choice! It's a pretty long action for a .243/.260 but don't let that stop you. You'll have plenty of room for long bullets.

Near makes a base for it I think and maybe USO. You can put a TRG trigger on it if you want and even drop it into a TRG stock. Our Whiskey-3 Chassis set up for the 995 will be available before too long as well. Good luck,
Justin

Re: Sako M995

+1 on everything above. I have 2. I just waiting on a Bartlein for a 338LM i'm converting to from a 7mmRM and the other for a 6.5x55 Swede again converting from a 7mmRM. That action gives you all sorts of options.

You know that the bolt face is a different size between the Lapua magnum and the belted magnum? And different again with the 6.5 Swede?

It can at times be easy enough to open up a bolt face for a larger cartridge but going from a belted magnum to the Swede will require a new bolt.

Re: Sako M995

Yep, I have all 3 bolt face sizes. 1 x 12s, 2 x 13.5s and 1x15s. Plan on acquiring a few more as they come available. Also the TRG42 mags works for the 338 and 300 so alls good there. Already have those as well as stock mags for the 270/06 and 308/6.5x55 and 7mmRM/300WM. Although I'm going to use the 270 mags for the 6.5 in order to be able to seat as long as I want. They block the 308/6.5 mags so can't seat long enough with em.

Layton - you are such a TRG-S whore!

Dantrom - I tend to agree with toddconley, the M995 action is as long as it is exceptional. Do it justice by choosing a caliber that makes use of the extra space. Most guys can't make efficient use of most longer-cased calibers as long-range rifles because those long VLD-style bullets need to be stuffed down into the case so far. Not true with an M995. Consider;

6.5x55 Swede with 140 Berger hybrids
280 Remington with 180g Berger hybrids
6.5-06 with 140g Berger hybrids
284 Winchester with 180g Berger hybrids
6mm Remington with 115g DTACS (you'd be the first one around here!)

I kept mine as a 7mmRM, and I'm very happy with it. I can't wait for the new Berger 195g hybrids to become available.

edt: BTW, I've got an extra 13.5mm faced bolt if anyone needs one and 2 original stocks.

That rifle looks awesome!

I'm going to have to look into some of these calibers, might consider optimizing the actions length thank you!
