Hey all, I'm looking to start a new build in .308 and I've narrowed it down to either a Remington 700 again or a Savage Model 10. Now my 700AAC set up Shoots amazingly and I'm very pleased, but I can not decide on what to use for a new build. I love Remington, but I've also looked into the savage model 10's and have also been very impressed. Basically it's going to be mostly a deer gun but I'd like to also be able to shoot out to lnger distances like I can with my 700, so I'm stuck between these as choices:

Remington 700 SPS Tac
Remington 700 SPS Varmint
Savage 10FP
Savage Precision carbine

All in 308, and stocks will be changed eventually to HS Precisions down the road. So what do you guys think, I'd really like to hear some input! Thanks for reading.

Spa tac gets my vote out of those. Shorter barrel is better for hunting in the woods, and you can get them for under 600 bucks.

Shooter,

I would say the Precison Carbine. I have handled a couple of them and they feel good to me. A friend of mine has one and he loves it, it shoots well for him.

As posted above, I would go with one of the short barreled guns regardless of brand since your main purpose is hunting.

Good Luck,

I am missing the part of the "build"

For a build, get a base model remington with a sporter weight barrel and have the smith of your choice true the action, lap the lugs, replace the trigger, install a quality match barrel and install it in a quality stock. That is a "build".

Buying a rifle and putting a scope on it is not a "build", it is putting a scope on your rifle.

Re: $800 for base rifle, Model 10 or 700....

How about customizing your aac...

Custom barrel, custom stock, time & true, lap, new trigger, bedding, all that goodness.

I've never understood the guys that just keep buying more factory guns instead of building custom rifles that fit them perfectly, you'll be more precise with the latter, it will be everything you want.
A custom in say 243, then another in 300wm to cover the plethora of critters, instead of a factory rig in every caliber.

Quality vs. Quantity thing. When you get the hankering for a new caliber, it's only a barrel away.

Re: $800 for base rifle, Model 10 or 700....

I'm fairly new to long range rifle shooting. But, from my limited experience with the .308 I can recommend the Savage 10 FCP to the casual shooter.OOTB one of the most accurate rifles I've owned. I finally broke down after I found myself at the range 4 or 5 times a month. So I broke down and got my hands on a Model 700 SPS, bedded it in an HS Precision M24 A1 stock, and topped it with a 4-12 Leupold vx-1. I sent the scope to Leupold straightaway to have it fitted with a mildot reticle and M! target turrets. After about 150 rounds of Gold Medal Match (168 gr)it settled in and now hitting 1/2 MOA (better when I Zen out). the 700 handles 800 yards with no sweat. IMHO If you"re looking for a ready to rock .308 the Model 10 can't be beat OOTB. But if you have big plans for long range or perhaps class F shooting, the 700 offers more accessories to bring to the party and enhance your build. Good luck & hane fun

Check out bud's guns search for 19055, it's a savage 10fcp w 5r rifling detachable mag heavy fluted and threaded barrel,& accustock. I have one and I love it.

Re: $800 for base rifle, Model 10 or 700....

I'd say the Precision Carbine in 6.5 Creedmoor would fit a gap in the gunsafe nicely (either will shoot well in long range conditions, and the 6.5 is a great hunting caliber). Plus, the Savage opens up a lot more room for building out the platform yourself, as time progresses (say get a .308 barrel for it, as .308 barrels are a dime a dozen for Savages, relatively speaking compared to finding a 6.5 Creedmoor barrel).

Re: $800 for base rifle, Model 10 or 700....

I picked up my base rifle, a Savage model 11 with DBM for about $400 and a factory 10fp barrel for $125. Am getting the barrel cut to 18" and threaded. All this under your $800.
Guess my choice is go with the Savage. And there is money left to go toward optics.

Don't mess around with that cheap stuff. FN PBR can be had for $800, short or long barrel. Putting a stock on it is the only thing you'd ever need to do with it anyway. It even already comes with a $175 Near manufacturing base installed. It can't be beat for twice the price.

Re: $800 for base rifle, Model 10 or 700....

fdkay - I'm sorry if what i'm looking to do doesn't classify as a "build". I'm not just throwing a scope on it and heading out.... I want to throw a nice stock on her (manners or stockade) bed it, yes glass her up etc, i'm just trying to figure out what the best OOTB performance would be between my choices. So, sorry it's not a complete "build".

calling4life - I would, but in all honesty i'm incredibly happy with how my AAC is shooting at the moment. I shot .5MOA groups all day the last few range trips and i'm more than happy with that. I did change to a Timney trigger though, and am very hppy with it! I made it to exactly what i was looking for in a rifle, a good shooting stick that's comfortable to me and looks exactly how i wanted it. I'm not exactly looking to shoot under .5moa every time i go to the range, i'm fine at the .5moa i'm at currently. Thank you for your input though, honestly. Maybe one day i'll have a smith work on truing my action, lapping lugs etc.

100yrdstare - Basically exactly what i'm trying to get at. I'm looking for the best OOTB deal i can get right now and everything i've been reading the 10FP is exactly what i'm looking for. Not looking to do extensive work on it, i just want a solid, accurate lighter rifle than my 700. If i was going to do a huge build, of course i'd go 700 again. But i'm trying to broaden my horizons ya know? Thanks for your comment!

Hogrider - I did check buds, they are out of stock! Nice rifle though. I'm going to be going through a close friend of mine with an FFL license.

Marine PMI - I looked into the 6.5, but i'm just going to stick to .308 for simplicity's sake. It's worked for me thus far, thank you though. Maybe in the future when i start reloading i'll look into it!

Thank you everyone for your input and recommendations. I'm going to go with the 10FP, i have a line on one for very cheap through my buddy, leaving me some extra money for the new stock (i have the glass already

If the primary duty will be as a deer gun, of the ones you have listed, I'd go with the precision carbine.

That being said, since you want to eventually upgrade the stock, look at the 700P LTR, it comes in an HS precision stock, it has a similar barrel profile to the 10PC (med contour) and they shoot very well.
You would have everything you need in one purchase.
