I'm looking at getting a new chronograph and was looking at the F1 nd was wondering if anyone had used one and what they thought.

Re: Chrony F1

Thats what I use but it has mixed reviews as far as consistency. I just shoot a 10 round string and average it.

Re: Chrony F1

Anyone familiar with the ProChrono chronograph by Competition Electronics? It seems to have better reviews.

Re: Chrony F1

I use an F1 and have mixed emotions. It works well at times and not so well others. Have had it a few years now and sometimes it reports velocities every shot. Other times, I get lots of error messages. Who knows? Maybe I'm doing something wrong (sunshade not installed properly, too close to muzzle, etc) but the bottom line is it's a bit whimsical. It is, however, fairly inexpensive.

I just switched from a Shooting Chrony ?? Master to the ProChrono and am VERY pleased thus far. The Shooting Chrony was just too damn picky. I've shot multiple strings through the ProChrono with both rifle and bow and have yet to get a single damn error. For a $100 chrono, I'm impressed!!!

I'd highly recommend the ProChrono over anything Shooting Chrony...

Re: Chrony F1

spend a little bit more and get one with the external display. depending on how far the chrony is even at 31 its hard to read the speeds for me

Re: Chrony F1

I think you get what you pay for.

When I used chronos, all I wanted was a simple velocity display, not avarages, es/sd;'s or whatever. A Chrony was good enough for that. Then mine got soaked during a Sun shower and become unreliable. I never got around to doing anything about it because for the most art, velocity has never been a big part of my handloading strategies.

I find I can shoot several distances out to 250yd, plug in the values to a calc, tune the velocity values until the drops coincide, get a ballpark trajectory, and use it to get me on paper further out. For my purposes, this works well enough. For my purposes velocity is most important as a factor telling me how far out I can shoot and remain reliably supersonic. Beyond that, it's just an arbitrary number and not especially interesting except for comparison purposes.

Re: Chrony F1

I have a crony beta master right now but Im ordering a CED probably next week. my chrony is hit or miss sometimes all I get is errors other times it works fine.

Re: Chrony F1

I have two CEDs, used to have a Oehler 43, and have a 20 year old Chrony....Most of the time I use my Chrony...Just quicker and easier to set up.

If you shoot in bright sun or low angle light you will have problems.
Set the unit up in the shade or build a box around it with a translucent top and all of the problems go away.
A plywood base with a bent up Coroplast sides and top is ideal...Just staple the Coroplast to the plywood base and form a simple horseshoe shaped light cover and you are in business.

I know it's a lot more $$$, but trust me on this one, you'll be happier in the long run. </div></div>

very interesting I never see that one before, I might have to hold off on the CED and go for one of those.

Re: Chrony F1

after reading all the posts/reviews on the magnetospeed I just put in an order in for one, it looks like the second run should soon be ready to ship in a week or 2 so I want to get in on it. thats about the time frame im looking at to start testing some of my loads, and I have my crony for a back up and if I want to use it on my semiauto hand guns. hopefully thell make a mount that will fit on a rail in time so you can use it on semiauto hand guns down the line

Re: Chrony F1

Too bad the prochrono model doesn't have a model with the brains seperate as I think it would be great. Now after reading all about the magneto I think thats what I want but can't do pistol loads with it. I've never had a chrono and am now just getting into reloading (pistol only, getting rifle supplies now) and this thread helps alot.
