OK, so I have always wanted to become a gunsmith, but time has never allowed. Now, time has been freed up, but I d, ason't have access to a brick and mortar school. I have been considering an online school, but I'm concerned as to the actual value of an
online school.
I have nearly 20yrs as a machinist and a welder as well as working as a mechanical
assembler. Any opinions?

Re: online gunsmithing school

I haven't heard much about them either.i'm looking at picking up their machining series myself. I've got a mini mill and lathe to play with.

You already know most of what you'll need. Study the different set ups, tooling and required jigs. Learn the right way to indicate a barrel in and the steps to installing/chambering it.

Gunsmithing schools are almost a waste of time and money. It's more about being a good machinist than anything else.

Online/through the mail schools are junk. William is 100% correct. Gunsmithing is very general, like a doctor. If you have a special type of gunsmithing in mind like building precision rifles, then a forum like this will give you all the info you need. Roscoe has a great post on bedding rifles that is very hard to beat. You can also go to you tube channel suar08161991 and you could get a few good tips there also.

Re: online gunsmithing school

Thank you for the input gentlemen. As I have read, and considered some projects, I had been coming to the conclusion that my machine skills were going to play the largest role in my future as a gunsmith. The input I have recieved here has confirmed this for me.
I have decided that I am going to pick a project, and go for it. Once I nail one down, I will post, and then post my progress as I go along.
Thanks again

Re: online gunsmithing school

It's amazing the depth of knowledge, and the willingness to share it- on forums such as this.

Not too many years ago, taking on major projects (or even minor ones) without having the knowledge was impossible.

The only issue is sometimes being able to sift through incorrect-or even dangerous- information that's offered up. Fortunately here, there's enough expertise that the bullshit gets called out pretty quickly.

Re: online gunsmithing school

BigpappaG,

You'll do more than fine. Watch the numbers like a tool and die maker would and not like a production/blacksmith machinist would.

Good luck and share your progress with us.

Right you are sir.

Re: online gunsmithing school

I went to the Colorado school of trades(Gunsmithing) in Lakewood, CO and think that is the only way you can learn gunsmithing. I have five 2" binders full of notes!!! Stuff you won't learn from some online course. I apprenticed for three years at Wisner's Gun Shop in Chehalis, WA. Struck out on my own after that. Now it is a hobby. I am a full time aviation machinist and have the machines and knowledge to build what I need.

The school in Northern CA is good too!

Re: online gunsmithing school

When I went to gunsmithing school the first time (CST) my machining background played a pivotal role in my success. However it was only a foundation and a set of skills that were part of the package.
I showed up there with the idea in my head that 'All I needed was a piece of paper.' The wind calmed and the sails went flat.
When I finished up a two year degree at MCC, I showed up at the door with a list of things I WANTED to know and NEEDED to know.
I benefited greatly, took my time and learned a great deal.
Great machinists don't always make the best gunsmiths and vice versa. Rifle builders and gunsmiths are two different animals.
Rifle building from a machinists' standpoint is primarily machining once the concept and the foundation are understood.
Drop off an LC Smith at a rifle builder's shop and tell them you want it restored, or take them a malfunctioning Browning A-5 and wait for the head scratching to begin.
Gunsmithing and rifle building are both apples, but they are are different colors and levels of sweet.

That's probably more like .05 than .02, but that is my observations from the past 18 years.

I have gotten a lot of answers from youtube, but fewer right ones

Be careful what you 'listen' to. On the interweb everyone is an expert.

I agree. A gunsmith can do a lot more than build rifles. I also know a few that went to gunsmith school, been in business for over 20 years, and can't do a decent bedding job. If you have a hard core interest in something, you will learn it. Formal school, or not. I'm not a gunsmith. Far from it, but when I wanted to learn to build rifles, I learned the hard way. Today there are many that have been in business a lot longer than I was, and don't build them any better.

My point is, that if a school is available, go to it. It will save you time, and sometimes money. However, if it's not, and you really want it, there are alternatives. As said above, the internet is full of info, but it's up to you to decide what is correct, and what is not. Best of luck.

Re: online gunsmithing school

I tried one from penn foster, don't waste your money ,if you want one agi has a video course or gun specific videos you can buy individually that are pretty good
