New Barrel Needed

So my .308 just all of a sudden started shooting like crap at about the 5700 round mark. The throat is so gone that I don't have to even size the case necks to get a loaded round to feed easily. It used to be a sub MOA gun, but no more. I can now expect 2 moa at best, it still has the factory barrel.

My real reason for the post is to ask what if any experience with the Pac-Nor polygonal rifled barrels have any of you had. I am driving 155 scenar and palma matchkings at 3000fps with what was sub MOA accuracy. I have heard that they supposedly stay cleaner with faster loads than a standard rifling.

thanks in advance for the help

Re: New Barrel Needed

Is setting the chamber back out of the question? Normally a lot less expensive than buying a new barrel and having it threaded, chambered and crowned.

I disagree, he's gotten 5700 rounds out of a factory barrel, I'd cut my losses and move on. Might as well spend the money on a new barrel imho and be good for a lot more shooting.

I've never shot a Pac-Nor, but I've had lots of good luck with Bartlein and would use them every time.

Well, update time. Got it back from the smith. I went with the Obermeyer barrel with the match chamber, and let me tell you its a real shooter. first 3 rounds went into the exact same hole on the page with zero variation. Then we took it out to 600 yards and with 2 different types of ammo proceeded to hammer a 4"x4" piece of steel. it is a true tack driver now. the old barrel throat was blown out to about 2.5-3 inches long and the barrel was pitted to all hell. I can't wait to see what this thing does after break in. with 40 rounds down the tube i had almost no fouling what so ever, only powder fouling, the patches came out almost white after the carbon fouling came out.

Re: New Barrel Needed

Good choice on going with a new barrel. With that many original rounds it would not be cost effective to have the machine work done on a pretty burned out barrel.
