I have been an avid reloader and long range shooter for about 3 years now but I have never had the opportunity to shoot past 800 yards. Well, today I went to my 500 yard range and met up with my boss (hunting partner} and he decided FINALLY to let me set up a 24x24" ar 500 plate at 1k. Reason we don't shoot more there is because it is an operating catfish farm and there's always a chance somebody could be in the area. Today we called, made sure, and nobody was there. Well, like a good Mississippi chap I pulled my pickup around and ranged it at 1002 yards. I pulled out my app Ballistic:Field tactical something and doped the scope. First 3 shots were right on target measuring 4". Gun was a GAP Crusader with a Night Force NXS 5x22 with 175 smks hand loaded. Funny part is I shot off of my roof of my truck with my knees on my toolbox. I am sorry if this is boring but I'm pretty pumped up to finally get 1k and solid 1k shots my first time!!

I want to be clear.... I wasn't shooting with high winds or tricky wind gusts. It was calm and peaceful. Wind was 2 mph from my 10 o'clock so I just put my cross hairs on the very edge of the left side of the plate & pulled the trigger Which was (LUCK) on target

Congratulations...I am not there yet myself but I hope I have as good a story and experience as you had.

Super cool...1 k has been a goal of mine for over a year!

Thanks everyone. I told a bunch of people and friends around town and no one except my boss seems to understand and appreciate how difficult it is to put a .30 caliber bullet (especially 175's) down range 1000 yards and make a first shot hit when you've never attempted it. Can't take all the credit. My chronograph, app on my iPhone, played a big part but the only reason I was able to do it was bc of my GA Precision crusader and my NXS nightforce. Those rifles are truly like cheating when shooting with buddies. Again thanks for " getting the meaning" of what I accomplished and all your congrats!!!

Why is it hard to hit with 175's? Is it less difficult to hit with 168's?

I meant compared to 208 amaxs or 210 vlds out of a .300 win mag. A .30 caliber

Congratulations on your accomplishment. However, I assure you that you can shoot 1K and beyond with many other makes of rifles besides a GAP

congrats, now that you have hit at 1000 with a rifle, do you feel like a 100 is pistol distance??

You do know you can go out and shoot a HP LR match at 1000 on a regular basis, right? I am pretty sure there are some 1000 yard matches in your area. Yeah, it requires a bit more than zinging out a round or two, but I bet you have more fun and you dont have to worry about hitting some catfish farmer in the process (or whatever catfish ppl are called). :)

Always thought about it. What all does it require as far as rules: I.e. Caliber, scope power, .....? What are all the classes of shooting? Don't mean to sound ignorant but on this particular topic I am verryy ignorant. This is directed towards mud ^^^ or anyone else willing to fill me in.

it is called Fclass and if you are shooting a 308 you will be in F TR, you'll need a mat and an action flag, couple of buck from range master.
bring cash for entry fee, if you are not sue what to do watch or ask the other guys there, pack a lunch and have fun.

Sounds fun. Probably watch 1st time just to get a feel for how everything operates.

Yeah, I don't think he brought enough for everybody.

Gratzs on the shots, find yourself some F class matches and shoot more. Lots of people seem interested, but too few seem willing to go do it. It's a learning experience, for everyone, every time.

You basically have everything you need already to go shoot F class matches. You just need to GO. do not be intimidated cause you already know the basics and with a zero of any sort, the guys there will have you on the black at 1000 on your first shot. Trust me, after your first match you will wonder why you didnt go out sooner! My 10 yr old has already shot a 1,000 yard match...if he can do it, YOU CAN. Now go find a match and have fun.

I just shot my first F-Class (600 yd) a week or so ago. I was pretty apprehensive, but the guys were all nice and willing to help out a newb. Don't be scared to let them know it's your first F-class. I'm glad I did it and now won't be near so nervous the next time.

I had just got my scope back from vortex and hadn't got a chance to zero it so the first round (dope card shown is from the first round) was spent getting it sighted in and overcoming my nervousness, but picked it up a bit in the next rounds:

Do you need a spotter? Also I live in ms close to alabama. Where would I find a match w/o driving 5 hours. We moved to my wife's home town and nobody and I mean NO ONE shoots long range. My wifes friends husbands are all scared of me because I have a weapon for every occasion. They think I'm a nut job bc all I want to do in my spare time is reload, hunt or shoot. Jokes on them though bc at 1k they are fucked.

I got my boss but he wouldn't be interested. I'll hunt around. Try to find someone. I really would love to get involved in matches.

At the event I attended, everyone participating takes a turn scoring for someone and/or working the pits. I think this is typical.

Yep, you are 100% screwed now, you will never want to go back to a 100 or 200 yd shooting range again!

Two matches at 1000 and now every time I shoot at the 100 yard range near my house I feel cheated! Yep...you're screwed. Sub 1 MOA at 100 is nowhere near as fun now that you've shot 2 MOA at 1000. lol

Ha... Before this my 500 yard range was getting boring. Got a buddy I just picked up a 5'x4' 3/8" plate for and welded some chains on for him. He is setting it for his 1000 to 1200 yard target! But he also just bought an Accuracy International that has 3 interchangeable barrels. .308,.300 win mag, 338 lapua. Dont ask me how it works bc i hsve no clue Sounds great and all, only problem is it's 2 and a half hours away to his range. But something tells me I will be doing a little driving this summer. One with my truck & the other with my rifles:)
