I havent purchased a .22 in around 20 years so ive been out of that market for a long time. Im looking to purchase a new .22 bolt action for my daughter and of course for me to shoot. I would like some opinions on what route I should go. My standard is that it has to be bolt action and under $250. Youth model is not nessasary, my daughter has shot my AR with no problems.

Re: .22 Bolt gun

Savage MKII fits the bill here. They have many different models from the basic plastic stock/pencil barre that run about $180 to the thumbhole laminate stock/heavy barrel $400. The BV is a solid rifle with a solid stock that can be had just a tad under $300.

As a new MKII owner, I'm a bit biased

Re: .22 Bolt gun

I am going to swing the other way and suggest a CZ.
They are the best bang for the buck and never let you down.
I have one so I might be a bit biased.

Re: .22 Bolt gun

Check out the Marlin XT-22 line. Smooth bolt operation, adjustable trigger pull, safe trigger system similar to Savage Accu-Trigger.

Re: .22 Bolt gun

The Marlin XT-22VR can be ordered at your local Wally world for 180 bucks it so. It comes with the heavy barrel. I'm not one to often buy my guns at the Walmart, but it was a heck of a deal for a great gun.

I'm biased also have a CZ452 Varmint in a Boyds Tacticool stock. Would recommend looking a CZ452 Scout with 11mm dovetail rail.

Re: .22 Bolt gun

I Would like to suggest the Ruger M77/22. I've had one for a while and love it. Most overbuilt .22 bolt action you'll ever put hands on!

Re: .22 Bolt gun

A first 22 is just that, number one of several.

Like all things related to entry level firearms, I strongly urge easy steps and starting with basics

The Savage MKII F is an excellent starter 22.

My own early MKII F actually corresponds closer these days to the Stevens 300 (List price under $200), and I'd be very happy to recommend the 300 as a starter rifle, especially if cost is important. In my own case, cost is important regardless of my budget; I believe in paying for what I need, period.

That first rifle will become long appreciated for its basic simplicity and trustworthy performance. That's why I favor a full sized rifle, and the most basic Savage or Stevens introductory modles as starters. They work well, and they keep doing so.

I bought mine used 14 years ago. It's still my go-to 22. It has also taught marksmanshp to a lot of young people as the most quickly chosen in our youth marksmanship programs ('Black Beauty').

There's absolutely nothing special about the rifle or its performance. It just keeps on performing and the kids have always just naturally gravitated toward this one. We've all put a lot of bricks of ammo through it, but it never balks and it seldom even seems to need cleaning.

When heavier barrels, better sights, and slicker triggers become an issue, the Savage line has them too. But a longtime shooter always cherishes the simplicity and go-back-to reliability of their first 22. Choose that one wisely. I'd suggest choosing the Savage MKII F or the Stevens 300 myself. I did.

Re: .22 Bolt gun

I agree with Greg on everything here. My first 22 was a bolt gun that came off the Marlin line as a 25N

I have no idea how many tens of thousands are through it, but I know it was enough to actually wear out the original trigger. Marlin didn't even have spare parts anymore (and this gun was purchased in Feb 1994) so I had to buy them from Numrich.

It is still one of my favorite little rifles, even though I'm a southpaw and there's no such thing as a lefty 25N.

I've got the better part of a dozen 22's in rifle and pistol form, but my "go to" 22's are:

Lefty Savage Mk II (accutrigger and a suppressor on this one)
Marlin 25N (I still love this rifle)
Ruger 22/45 blued

As a friend of mine calls it, "Your lefty two-two is a suppressed end of the world gun"

It always works, it's plenty accurate, and super quiet and useful.

Great rifle.

Re: .22 Bolt gun

If I were seeking an end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it rifle a 22 bolt gun would be one, but not my only one.

Re: .22 Bolt gun

My recent experience with a Marlin Xt-22 was great. Tough to beat for $167 and even though I played with a bunch of stuff it could easily be shot out of the box for 99% of its owners with no problems. I will be buying a few more for my kids.

Re: .22 Bolt gun

savage mkii fv-sr. bull barrel but short and not as heavy. has rail and accutrigger. right around $250 in this neck of the woods. also a large number of accessories available.
