I have a 308 I shoot in competition but have to use a leather cheek riser which rises it up almost an inch. Since I am using a 30mm scope with a 50mm objective the rings are medium height. I would like to install a comb riser kit from brownells but I’m worried about cutting into the stock. Are the HS stocks hollow or have a soft core? If someone knows or has done this in the past any insight would be appreciated. I really don't want to ruin a good stock.

Re: HS Precision Cheek Rest Modification

They are hollow. You might want to try the saddle type that only requires two holes.

Re: HS Precision Cheek Rest Modification

I made a semi-perminant cheek riser for my HS stock. I took a piece of 5/8 foam packing from the military ammo case(1680 rds M855)I cut a piece that fit on the top of the comb.
I made a paper template of the riser traced over the comb. I taped the foam on the stock. I then took 1/8" Kydex and the heat gun and molded it over the foam and the stock. I then went to the craft store and got a sheet of 1/8" neoprene foam and spray adhesived it on the kydex stretching it tight. I then cut 4 5/8" slots in the Kyex. 2 on each side, 1 on the bottom front and 1 on the back vertical. Through these I threaded 1/2 two sided velcro straps. I then put 2 velcro pads on the bottom of the top foam(after gluing it to the underside of the top of the Kydex)I then put 2 velcro pads on each side of the bottom the Kydex. I affixed the velcro pads to the stock and cinched the velcro straps tight.

It works and it solid and if needed can be removed without any damage to the stock

Re: HS Precision Cheek Rest Modification

i thought about the saddle types but i'm not a fan of how they look. Thanks for letting me know that they are hollow.

Re: HS Precision Cheek Rest Modification

I was looking into all different kinds for my HS Precision Savage. I didn't want to ruin the stock either. My dad and I were just playing around with it trying different things. I had some rubber pads that look like giant mouse pads 1/4" thick. We cut a strip of it. Wrapped it around the stock over lapping it a couple inches where it contacts my face to make it thicker. Wrapped it in leather. And presto! I wouldn't trade it for anything you could buy. And it was free.

Re: HS Precision Cheek Rest Modification

I have two HS precision stocks that I put the Karsten's Cheek Rest B-Model. It doesn't have the big knobs on it (the big knobs look like shit in my opinion). Its pretty sleek and with the notches in it you can pick a height and its repeatable.

Just my .02

Here's an example of a KMW loggerhead in a HS stock from a 5R

Also put a flush cup on this one.

Re: HS Precision Cheek Rest Modification

You can build a fixed comb to suit you & your stock/scope combo out of fiberglass & epoxy. When you're building it, glue a tube in place behind the bore axis onto the stock's original comb for the cleaning rod to pass through.

Ah, & when you're building it, remember to leave enough room to put the bore guide in between the new comb/tube cheek piece, & the back end of the bolt channel.

Also, there are a few good info bits & links HERE on this/similar topics.

Re: HS Precision Cheek Rest Modification

Pretty good looking work stockdoc! I have a HS and was thinking of doing something like this but thought it could not be done.

Re: HS Precision Cheek Rest Modification

delfuego, can and have been doing this for a while. working on one right now for a local agency. will post pics when done

Re: HS Precision Cheek Rest Modification

Stockdoc what do you charge for a setup like in the pics?

Re: HS Precision Cheek Rest Modification

I am like you and really didnt like most of the saddle type check rest but I wound up and got one from XLR Industries and like the crape out of it. It is made from aluminum and is adjustable and best of all looks great on my HS stock.

You wouldn't happen to have a picture would you?

Re: HS Precision Cheek Rest Modification

I put the Karsten's Cheek Rest on my HS. I really like it.

Re: HS Precision Cheek Rest Modification

To to vouch for Stockdoc here. I am pretty sure that is my 5R stock in the pics. You will not be disappointed with his work. I could not be happier with the job he did on my stock.

Re: HS Precision Cheek Rest Modification

What about a Mcmillan MBR Tooley? Can you put an adjustable cheek on it? I don`t want to put a Karsten on it. I like the KMW loggerhead if possible.

Stock doc, I am considering this mod. I am not far from you (elk grove), how do I contact you.

Re: HS Precision Cheek Rest Modification

I can install kmw loggerhead into those stocks. Turns out clean and positions your head way better than the saddle type cheek piece does. Contact me for pics
Hi, what is your email. I am interested in getting a HS Precision stock installed with the KMW Loggerhead cheek rest as well as a walnut stock chip repair
