Background:

I prefer 1-4 and 1-6 optics (typically Trijicon, and now a Leupy Mark 6 in the works) but periodically (or with a new rifle) I like to slap something on there that has at least 10x magnification to do relatively relaxed accuracy testing. For infrequent use, I don't need an S&B laying around....but I don't want to buy junk, either.

Now, I've got a sister who 3guns and has expressed interest in trying on a Precision Rifle Level 1 class (Tiger Valley) but she neither has the rifle or the optic to do it. I'm surprising her with a JP15 upper which will 3gun AND be relatively precise, so she's that much closer to taking the rifle class...but the optic remains to be sorted out. All she has right now is a Trijicon TR21 post/triangle reticle. I figure that whatever she might need as a minimum quality/magnification/features optic for a Level 1 precision class would be fine for my infrequent accuracy testing optic. So, what am I looking at needing to loan her that will suffice for an entry "precision rifle" optic but won't break my already compromised piggy bank?

SS 10x? Viper Vortex PST 2.5-10? Something....? It'd be nice to spend less than $500..significantly less would be great - I'm not sure that there is a good value much below that range, though?

Thanks for the expertise!

Bushnell 10x40 tactical is something to consider. Good scope, I've had a few with zero issues on .308 and AR and now available mil or moa in turret. A talented member that had that scope on a Savage was top-gun in TJs PR class I attended years ago out to 1k. Obviously more on him then the scope, but it works and the price-point more than fits.
Short, lightweight, no parallax, tracks per adjustments.

3-12 Bushnell Elite Tactical Mil/Mil FFP is hard to beat. You can find them in the optics for sale section for about 5 to 6 hundred used. The SS 10xHD Mil/Mil model is a great choice as well. You don't see them up here for sale very often though. The 3-9 SS Mil/Mil FFP would also get the job done, but might not do the trick for accuracy testing due to it's lack of high end magnification. Although it's plenty of scope for a .223 cal AR rifle.

For that budget, I think you already made the right choices.

I have seen some reasonably priced 4.5 x 15 leupolds on the used market. I would rather have more money in the scope than the gun.

I would go with the PST, I use both SS 10x42 on a .308 and PST 2.5-10 on a 6.5 Grendel and I like the PST better, cost twice as much but it's worth it IMO.
