My Lucas Bore Guide Arrived Today

I had emailed Mike several weeks ago about a bore guide and he replied to send him an email towards the end of May to get on his June run. So I did.

Again he responded quickly to get all my information. I sent him a check so he knew I was for real.

Then, a couple days later I get an email from Mike telling me it's on the way! I was so surprised, but he said he had a cancelled order and I got the slot.

That, ladies and gentlemen is A+ customer service. My rifle needs to be cleaned and I'm actually looking forward to doing it!

So thanks snipershide for turning me on to Mike Lucas, and a big thank you to Mike as well!

Re: My Lucas Bore Guide Arrived Today

They are great bore guides. Almost makes me wish I cleaned my rifles more often.

Re: My Lucas Bore Guide Arrived Today

I received mine as well. I have what is probably a dumb newbie question -- the bore guide comes with two pieces: one that is the bore guide, and then another piece that can slide inside of that. What is the inner piece used for? Just to make the opening smaller if you don't need to use the solvent port?

the small insert is used to guide your cleaning rod. did you let him know what brand rod you are using? the inserts are matched to specific rods.

Ah, yes, the inner part does match my rod. Thanks for the quick answer!

Re: My Lucas Bore Guide Arrived Today

Those bore guides are sweet but recently there has been some discussion about whether the bore guide blocks the brush from cleaning the throat area and once in a while I hit that area with a wet patch without the guide in it and a little bit of gunk always comes out. The rimfire guys religiously to do that to keep the carbon ring down as it builds up right there.

Unless you are shooting a straight body cartridge (no shoulder) then this is a non-issue. The bore-guide does not reach the throat portion of the chamber--not even close. If you have gunk build-up as far down in your chamber as the guide reaches, you have much bigger problems.

If you are having crap (carbon, etc) build up in your chamber below the shoulder, either your chamber is way too big or your brass way too small allowing gas etc to blow back past the shoulder. Either that or you are chambering dirty ammo.

I'd try again, I emailed him and had a response in under 24hrs. Actually 2 responses b/c I had a couple questions and asked for a price quote.

Re: My Lucas Bore Guide Arrived Today

Mike is GTG.

-superior product and great cs has always been my experience.

I usually have one for a rifle build before I have recieved the rifle. It usually takes between 3-4 weeks from day of order.

Re: My Lucas Bore Guide Arrived Today

+10 He has that good of a bore guide.

Re: My Lucas Bore Guide Arrived Today

Are these guides caliber/chamber specific or made for particular models of a rifle.

I was wondering if I get a .308 bore guide from Mr Lucas, can I use it in a bolt gun and a semi-auto rifle?

Thanks.

Re: My Lucas Bore Guide Arrived Today

I just got mine in the mail a few days ago. I emailed Mike about three weeks ago. He replied back within a few hours with questions on the type of rod I use and the length. Another email back to him with the answers with a prompt reply of how to proceed. I mailed him a check, about three weeks later I got a email that mine was on the way. Painless and a very nice guide rod.

Yes, Mike tailors his bore guides to the action and chamber of the specific rifle and also the insert is specific to the rod you are using. The external dimensions of the guide match the bolt it replaces to that the rod is centred exactly with the bore and also to ensure there is minimal movement of the guide in the action.

So there is no "generic" .308 guide.

My .308 Rem SA guide is completely different to that for my AI .308 or 7.62x54R.

Similarly the .223 guide is tailored to the internal profile of the chamber and action (presumably similar for a .308 gas gun , only smaller in this case?):

Top to bottom:

.308 RemSA
.308 Accuracy International
.223 Rem AR
7.62 x54R Mosin Nagant
30-06 M1903
8mmx57 Mauser

This show's the different widths:

So, no Mike does not make a generic .308 "one size fits all" solution.

Re: My Lucas Bore Guide Arrived Today

Looks like very nice guides, how much are they?

I ordered mine in January and it was around 40-50 shipped

Re: My Lucas Bore Guide Arrived Today

Thanks, I'm sure they are worth it but more than I would have guesed.

Re: My Lucas Bore Guide Arrived Today

I have a couple of them and they are very good. They slip in tight and do not allow the rod to move around inside the barrel thus keeping you from screwing things up. He is very quick about getting back with you when you email him. For the guy who has not been able to get in touch with him, I would email again. Maybe he had computer problems that day or something. Never know. He got back to me within a day when I ordered my first from him. Might take a little while to get your guide but they are good.
