recomend a good bullet puller

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

I have an RCBS of similar nature (impact style) that I have used for over 2 decades, but have had to replace the "jaws" a couple times.

Also have a Hornady collet style bullet puller and use it when I am more concerned about reusing the bullets (for other than playing). I consider it a much more serious puller but it takes more time to use.

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

I have broken my RCBS impact puller twice. RCBS replaced the cap when just that part broke and then replaced the whole thing when it broke near the handle. I was going to jump into the collet style, but bought the Cabelas version of the impact puller (which came with jaws for different caliber groups), so that I have a backup, if the RCBS breaks for the third time.

after watching that video. that looks like a more reliable solution.

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

I have never used an impact bullet puller. The one I use occasionally is the RCBS collet puller, the stamp on the top says '69 but the more recent caliber collets I have purchased work just fine. I would say it is the best way to go, not only based on the above responses, but other reports, (how true, I don't know?) that occasionally, a round goes off when struck especially hard.

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

+1 on the RCBS collet style die/ puller. I'm very happy with it.

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

I have RCBS and Forster. Forster is 48 years old and works fine. Either will serve you long and faithfully. JMHO

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

"(Lyman) broke after 6 months of very little usage."

I wonder where it broke? What were you pulling and what were you hitting it on? And, was that metal handle getting bent at all?

Collet pullers serve a purpose with rifle ammo when there's a good bit of full diameter bullet exposed. Collet pullers are useless on many short rifle bullets and most handgun ammo.

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

I've had good luck with the Hornady collet type puller, but I don't use it much and only for rifle rounds.

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

I like my collet puller but it leaves marks so for bullets I care about I use an inertia (hammer) type. The key to the hammer type is hitting on a pad of carpet laying on a cement floor.

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

+1 on the Hornady puller. So far I've had no problems with mine

handle is fine, this is where its broken and spilling powder

purely my fault since I don't have carpet in my garage!

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

RCBS puller here. My collet broke, rather than buying another collet, just use your shell holders. Works fine.

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

I can't understand how you could use a shell holder with an RCBS puller without/instead of a collet?

As far as pulling pistol bullets, that issue has never come up, for me? Crimped? Have never had to pull VLD bullets, either. Lucky me. BB

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

I use the RCBS collet style puller and it works wonders

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

+1 for RCBS collet style bullet puller. I have never had a problem damaging bullets. I had an impact puller but it always damaged the bullet nose. I have bought several different collets for different calibers. Now, I just make my own collets. I even made a 50 BMG puller for my press like the RCBS puller. I have never had a problem grabbing the bullet, maybe I am just lucky. I gave my impact puller away, not for me. Good luck.

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

"..this is where its broken and spilling powder purely my fault since I don't have carpet in my garage!"

Well, your puller isn't exactly "broken", it appears the face has been battered away by hitting it on concrete, as you recognise. No brand of inertia puller is immune to that.

All pullers of the same type look pretty much the same and work the same, there are no vast differences in use.

ONE story, with photos provided by the user, of an impact puller experiencing an explosion circulated a few years ago saying the cartridge went off in his garage due to using a shell holder. I do believe the round went off, I DON'T believe it had anything to do with using a shell holder; there is NO way a primer could be hit by any puller shell holder I've ever seen. I suspect the dude hammered the thing upside down on something that went through the hole in the cap and hit the primer, then he cooked up the shell holder story in a moment of panic to cover the error to his wife.

Anyway, I've used shell holders in my inertia pullers for decades and have no intention of stopping. YMMV.

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

Beat the inertia bullet puller on a square block of some hard wood , keeping in your hand the block of wood : this way your hammer bullet puller will last forever (...and no,the bullet dont risk to be propelled through the wood and through your hand)_

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

I use the RCBS model which is probably the cheapest but it get's the job done when I need it to /...

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

During nearly 20 years of reloading,I have used many inertia bullet pullers and they mostly work okay. However, to me, they have been inconvenient, time consuming and sometimes, messy.
About one year ago I purchsed the Hornady Cam Lock bullet puller and it performs perfectly: 1) easy to set up; 2) simple and fast to use; 3)as long as I do not really "crank down" on the handle, it does not mark the Sierra, Hornady and Nosler bullets I have pulled. Handling the pulled bullets and remaining powder has been convenient and clean.
The Hornady is the best of all bullet pullers I have used while working at my own bench or that of friends.
It has my highest recommendation.

The RCBS and other cam-lock style bullet pullers might be just as good as or better than the Hornady to those who use them.

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

I use my pulled bullets for load development/confirmation, foulers, and sighters. They always seem to work fine, but I prefer to use virgin bullets for score.

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

I have a couple of kinetic pullers.
I have the RCBS, the Forster, and the Hornady collet pullers.

The kinetic is best for just doing one round, as long as there is no crimp.

The Hornady is best for multiple rounds.

The collets are not interchangable between brands

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

I have used a RCBS inertia puller and it worked fine, however I load amax bullets on several calibers and sometimes it damaged the plastic tips on the bullets, I been using the RCBS collet puller and it works great, I use bushing neck sizers on most of my brass and neck tension is not so tight that it would damaged the bullets, I have damaged some bullets loaded on FL resized brass but not bad enough that I couldn't use them, so if neck tension is very tight you might want to use the inertia puller to avoid damaging the bullets, if not the collet puller is the way to go IMO.

Thank you for the posts and suggestions.

....not if you get the feel of it, just enough to grip the bullet, but not enough to leave marks. This is dependent on your neck tension, of course. BB

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

Cruze5, I have the RCBS inertia (hammer type) puller as well as the RCBS collett puller. If I had it all to do over again I'd buy the Hornady collet puller and this is why: The inertia puller has O-rings that eventually break, sometimes requires multiple hard hits and can be messy. The RCBS collett puller has a screw-type tightening design. Only problem I have is sometimes, even when I really think i've got the die TIGHT into the press, I will tighten the collet down to pull the bullet and when I unsrew the collet holding shaft, the die will want to back out instead of releasing the bullet. The Hornady design uses a clamp-over design that I believe would not only be faster but would eliminate the die from trying to unscew from the press. These are just my personnal experiences. YMMV

Re: recomend a good bullet puller

I use the kinetic but it does damage bullet tips. I also tried to pull some crimped 44 mag with XTP's once and the lead actually came out of the jacket through the hollow point in a long pencil thick slug. The jacket stayed in place. I was a heavy roll crimp.

Hornady Cam lock puller for rifle. Franklin impact puller for handgun.
