I am finalizing a SBR 300 blackout and was wondering if anyone had suggestions. I will be using it for hunting hogs at a max distance of 200 yards. I like small footprint and under 1000

Re: scope recommendations

I'm a fan of the SWFA 3-9 personally. Maybe not an ideal choice for a hunting rig, but at least worth a look.

Re: scope recommendations

Are planning on using it for evening/night hunting? Some of the low power scopes are good for quick shots in good light but a 150 yard shot at dusk or dawn might require something with a little bigger objective.

Re: scope recommendations

excellent point. i will be hunting with good light but would be open to suggestions for good and low light. thanks!

Re: scope recommendations

you might take a look at the 3-9x42 meopta meopro. been happy with mine and affordable.

Re: scope recommendations

nice choices, no doubt but i am looking for a smaller foot print...

Re: scope recommendations

what do you mean by small footprint? do you want a small objective? if wanting a camo scope look at the nikon coyote specials. A $1000 dollar scope for a gun that will only be used for 200 yards max and daylight only is way too much.

Re: scope recommendations

I don't know why some put so much value on the actual size of the objective. There are other variables to consider. I'll just say that I have a 2.5-10X32 and it's a nice scope. Not small, but smaller than most of its competition.

It's also brute tough.

I don't have an SBR with that large a scope on it, but this is my 16" build with the 2.5-10X32. It is relatively compact, but still not small.

Re: scope recommendations

When I say "small footprint" I should have said compact.

Re: scope recommendations

nice set up. I found out leupold makes scope specifically for the 300 blackout. but the price is high: 300 Blackout Reticle Available in Leupold Mark 4 1.5-5x20mm MR/T is listed at optics planet for 1400; yikes. the vx-r 1-4 goes for about 450. might be good option.

Re: scope recommendations

The only drawback to that Leupold that you're talking about is that it's pretty purpose specific. You may be better off with a more conventional reticle.

In any case, given the price, I'd go for the Nightforce.

Re: scope recommendations

good point. also the leupold is pricey and NF makes some good stuff.

Re: scope recommendations

I recently put a Bushnell 1-6.5 FFP scope on a 14.5 SBR and can. That scope is growing on me. Great if you were in bushes close up as a red dot, and 6.5 out to 200 is perfect. There area several good 1-6 scopes out now. That might be a good fit.

Re: scope recommendations

thanks Pappasniper. I will look into that suggestion right away. That is the combination of features I need for my use.

Re: scope recommendations

There really are some GREAT options for you if you look in the right places.

Clearly there are critical factors to choosing

1. for hog hunting, you need to be able to go very wide very at very short distances (I've had hogs as close as 15 yards to me in heavy brush)
that means a scope that starts at 1x, 1.5x or 2x MAX, no bigger than that! Fast aquisition and wide field of view are critical.

2. you want to shoot as far as 200 yards. that rules out the typical combat 1-4x24 although for many snipers they would ins't it is good enough, good enough isn't the question here. We're looking for what's best for YOUR needs. With hogs, you may need to shoot a small piggy at that distance and can tell you will be much happier and feel much more confident about shot placement with higher power. This means you need to be able to zoom in at least 9x to 12x

3. since pigs a shoot what you want when you want game (at least in my state) meaning you can hunt till dark or even at dark, this means you need illuminated retical. TRUST ME ON THIS!

4. You want a compact scope, meaning not to heavy and not too big. I agree here to the inth degree. Too many boys want BIG toys so they can look like the one with biggest "bulge" so to speak in the looker room

But I don't give a crap what people think, I care about what is best for my needs.

I have two scopes on my rifles that serve your needs. I did a ton of research before buying them. Based on that experience I think the best scope for you is an either the IOR Valdada 1.5-10x26 or their 2-12x36. both have 35mm tube which makes a HUGE difference in terms of light. both are in that price point that gives the best quality on the market without reaching those ridiculous prices of some of those more recognized names.

I have the Valdada 3-18x42 on my FNAR and their 2-12x32 on my Sig Sauer M400

I think SWFA still was of the 2-12x32 in their demo list for the great price of $999 which for under $1,000 it is hands down the single best scope you will find that meets your needs!!

That's my poor boy opinion, and you take it to the bullseye!

with all due respect, Pappa, I don't think his "hunting" needs of 200 yeards of less merits the much higher $$$ for a FFP. Most of us sight in our rifles at 200 yards or some at 100; given that the differential there in drop is only 1.3 to 4 inches (based on caliber)most hunters will never touch their turrets and simply create a habbit for that marginal hold.

That's my poor boy opinion, and you can take it to the bullseye!

A key aspect I really like about this option is the 1X power of a red dot. A 3-9x40 would be OK. He wants a nice piece of glass and said under 1k. FFP is not the huge issue, it's more the magnification range. There are no turrets per say The OP stated this seems to offer the combination of features he is looking for. Maybe he understands better what he wants than you do. That's just his opinion and he might not be a poor boy.

Re: scope recommendations

*In general* Leupold scopes are more compact and lighter than most of the competition in the same configuration.

I would check out a vx R scope. I have a Leupold vari-x III 1.75-6 which has a generous FOV and would be perfect for hog hunting.

The great thing about hunting hogs is if you keep the wind in your favor you can get close enough to touch them.

Re: scope recommendations

How about one of the Burris XTR 1.5-6x40. Compact, very bright, open sided reticle. Under a grand.

Re: scope recommendations

The SWFA 1-6x24 is high quality, compact, and in your budget. It works like a red dot at 1x and has a usable tactical reticle at 6x. Turrets can be exposed or capped.

These are brand new and won't hit the market till this month or next, so I cannot personally speak to it (other than I'm getting one), but there is a thread with pictures and mini-review here:
