Hey everyone,

I am new the forum and really only signed up to ask this longwinded question/statment. I have seen some articles on the site about cheek rests/risers but haven't really figured it out. Please bear with me as you may be rehashing an old topic but as I have just built my rifle it is a new topic for me.

I am really happy with my rifle the way it is right now. But, and this is a little but, I want to raise the comb height on my H-s Precision PSS stock to work with my high rings and 50mm objective scope.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions. I would like one that just becomes part of the rifle. I dont really want to drill my stock but will it is the only real option.

And to the credit of FractalOps I have tried the lace up one from Blackhawk! while it did work I found it to move a lot.

Below are some links to ones I have found and brief descriptions about them.

-Awesome! Would be my #1 choice. However, Called em- patent pending for 1.5 years guy is not making them until Bladetech takes over the operation, who knows when.
http://cheekwelder.net

-Not really made for my stock but is a cheap solition that I would have to rig to be able to take off.

-Seems to be what people are using. I am not a huge fan of it because it is permanent and puts holes in my stock.

-Should work on my stock. not permanent but not a looker either. Emailed with company this is the only one that would fit my stock that they make.

I tried calling H-S Precision they were NO help at all. The guy was actually kinda stand offish. I think the only thing he said the whole conversation was "No".

Any thoughts...

PS: Here she is in a quick run down:

Vortex Crossfire scope

Re: Rifle comb height help...

Get lower rings. Those are way too high.

Re: Rifle comb height help...

Here is what I would do.

Get ahold of a one the eagle stock packs, triad makes one now I believe. Put it on and see how much that helps. From the looks of it you may need a bit more than that though.

A couple options. Take a mouse pad or two, and cut it/them to the size you need. Lay them down, then wrap it very tight with 550 cord. I did this on my hunting rifle so I could mount my scope with the irons still on. Between the pad, stock pack, and para cord you should be able to get the height just about where you want it to be.

Much easier than drilling, and if you wrap the cord well, it is pretty sturdy and looks plenty good enough. I like this route simply because it is very easy, there is no chance of messing anything up, no waiting, and you can just remove it if your setup changes later on.

Re: Rifle comb height help...

If your primary goal is function and appearance is not of major concern, mouse pads and duct tape are inexpensive and work well.

Re: Rifle comb height help...

I made a karsten look alike out of aluminum. Then added foam to outside and Velcro to inside. Then put loop side on stock. Nothing too permanent, and it looks nice. Foam was 1/8 in. With glue on it already.

Re: Rifle comb height help...

Thanks guys,

I knew it would be along the lines of the mouse pad and duct tape concept. I had that on my last stock and could never shake the feeling it looked so janky.

That is why I was looking for a pre fab thing that I can just add on. But the more I think about it maybe some mouse pad and a triad pack are the way to go?

As far as new rings. I am already $200 into these ones, so I can't afford another $200 in. And when I called Larue and asked which I should get, after a short description of my rifle & scope they with out a doubt said these ones. Well they are painted and on sooo they are mine to keep now! Don't get me wrong Larue makes an outsanding product and I am glad to have them!

The gun functions quite well (.6" @ 100yrds) so anything now will just help.

Thanks for your ideas and feel free to keep em comin!

Re: Rifle comb height help...

You should have called Larue and told them they were wrong and had them exchange them. For $200 they should have seeing as they advised incorrectly. But I guess that's a $200 learning experience.

For the future look here
http://www.seekinsprecision.com/index.ph...6&Itemid=33

It's a ring height calculator that actually works. If it doesn't have your scope then just use one that has the same tube and objective size.

Re: Rifle comb height help...

I have a Savage with the Choate tactical stock on it, and their riser is pretty easy to customize for height, and the single screw holds it in place very securely.

Re: Rifle comb height help...

Copy/pasted from Larues website (the LT113 is the 20 rail):

"These 30mm rings attach to any MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail, but are the perfect-match for the LT113 on Remington 700 model rifles."

I am not as crazy as I thought!

Rob01- of course they dont have my scope.

Flyrodder: you would suggest that riser? Do you have a pic by any chance? Did you have to change anything on it for bolt removal?

Hooker308- same as above got a reference pic?

Re: Rifle comb height help...

Are they painted with krylon? That stuff can be removed without too much trouble. Looks like you have a sendero barrel and the scope has a 50mm Obj and 30mm tube. If they won't exchange your rings, get yourself some seekins, NF, or Vortex 30 mm medium rings and sell the ones you have on eBay; it will save yourself loads of aggravation. A triad tactical stock pack comes with shims to raise the comb to the right height. That should fix your problem and make your rifle much more pleasant to shoot, all without it looking and feeling ghetto.

Re: Rifle comb height help...

Lookup Joe Ducos here on the hide. He does a cheek piece mod that is better than factory.

Re: Rifle comb height help...

I did the mouse pad and tape method then threw a triad pack on top of it. It stays in place, makes it easy to fine tune the height and won't look ghetto.

Re: Rifle comb height help...

As everyone has said, lower rings is a good start. Sell those and buy new. You won’t be out the full $200. The little bit you lose selling and buying will be forgotten with the gained comfort when shooting.

I find the easiest and most hassle free way to raise cheek weld is a stock pack and double sided velcro.
The velcro can be found at any hardware, sewing, and even furniture stores. Buy the heavy duty to insure you stay ‘tactical.’

1) Buy stock pack and put on rifle
2) Too low, go to #3. Fits right, go to #5
3)Cut double sided Velcro into 3/4" wide strips that are as long as the top of the stock pack
4) The inside of stock packs are lined with velcro. Layer strips until desired height is reached.
5) Go shooting!

This way when you remove the stock pack your modification stays with it. you don’t have to constantly be resetting things or messing with tape. Also, the velcro stays clean and is easy to clean.

Re: Rifle comb height help...

I made one out of minicell foam for my precision stock. It's still gray so it doesn't look out of place. I can still clean my rifle too as the minicell has some give to it. Putting a stock pack over it would solve the home made look.

Re: Rifle comb height help...

Tainted - the Choate riser works great for me, since I have the Choate stock. My scope is pretty low, so I had to shorten the riser. It is a fairly hard plastic but you can dremel or sand or even cut it to shape. No problems with bolt removal, but, again, my scope is close to the bore. You can do a mock up and see if the height you need will still allow the bolt to clear. If not, you may not want to have to unscrew the riser each time. On the other hand, I have a stock pack on another rifle that I do have to remove, and I know velcro wears out. That screw won't.

I also support the recommendations for trying to switch out those rings if you can. Ultimately you'll probably be happier.

Good luck!

Re: Rifle comb height help...

Again thanks guys. Some really great ideas.

I am 100% getting a triad pack.

I might try some janky stuff. But probably get a Choate riser. It is the cheapest so I will try it.

I emailed Larue and they told me to get a stock riser but had no suggestions on which. Then I asked them if they had any medium rings. Got this answer: "We don’t, LT719 and LT123 are what’s available" SO, on that note if the above does not work I am totally willing to try to de-paint & sell the ones I have and go with Badger Medium ones (also from Triad, Thanks for not charging 200!). I am sure someone will want Larue rings for a bit cheaper and only 5 months old...

As always if you have more suggestions keep em comin I am totally reading them and appreciate them!!!

Re: Rifle comb height help...

Would they exchange them for the LT 719? I bet those would work.

Re: Rifle comb height help...

Buy the Badger rings Steve mentioned or some TPS which are a bit cheaper. Sell your Larues. You can send them to me and I'll clean them up and paint them with KG flat black for free. You pay shipping. I can get them back to you in a couple days. Then buy a Triad stock pack or Karsten. Drilling holes in your stock is not permanent. The holes can always be filled and repainted.

Re: Rifle comb height help...

Regardless of what route you take, you need a lower scope, not a higher cheek piece... It will make your data easier, too.

Re: Rifle comb height help...

Tactical22- No, the LT179s would not work. They are ultra low rings. I need at least Medium with the 50 obj.

Ordered my Triad pack last night!

I have come into a barter situation for a pair of Nightforce Med rings. They are not quick release. But, to tell you the truth, I don't really know how needed that is. It was more of just a cool novelty to have. I have no plans to play hop-scope.

The lower rings and stock pack should not only help but solve the quandry completely.

Re: Rifle comb height help...

Good luck, keep us posted. I really like having the stock packs on rifles. I think you will be very happy with it. No harm in a bit of extra padding under if you need it lol.

Personally, I would not worry about the quick release. You dont have irons on the rifle anyway. If anything you will be better off with the nightforce rings. They just plain hold and are exactly what you want on a precision rifle. Just make sure you torque them correctly, and they will be good to go.

Re: Rifle comb height help...

***Update***

Received the Triad stock pack last night. Great piece of gear. I really like it. Super comfy on my cheek. With all the adjustments I was able to make it fit the rifle perfectly. The pocket was great to throw a few allens, my range long and some odds and ends in. My wife called it a rifle fanny pack. Ha. I had no good response to that. Can't wait to get it out and "send it" with stock pack on there.
Thanks Steve!

Next update should be in a couple of days. I should be getting the lower scope rings today. And will get them on the rifle ASAP.

Will do a final update when everything is in it's place and the world is whole again.

Re: Rifle comb height help...

WAY better.

With the Triad pack and the lower NF rings this thing seems like its going to out perform my 3/4" groups. Its so comfy now!
When I shoulder the rifle with my eyes closed, then open them I am totally aligned with the scope.

Will update more over the weekend. I plan to go zero it tomorrow.

Re: Rifle comb height help...

Oh, i dunno. i think the pics came out pretty good. sweet rifle.

Re: Rifle comb height help...

Is it being hidden in the barn to prevent discovery by your wife? I know the feeling. She still knows nothing of my black mistress; initials T.R.G.

Re: Rifle comb height help...

Disregard above. I see your reference to your wife's comment.

Let me just say you have a very understanding, wonderful wife! LOL

4 rounds at 100 yards. Using a ruler I'd say 3/8" or so.
