How do you search for past posts on 308, 20" bolt rifle velocity's? I remember seeing them in the past. I have a Kreiger bbl on order and an contemplating changing the order to have it finished at 20". I will still want to use Varget and SMK's in 175gr. Thanks! krw

Re: searching for 308, 20" Bolt gun velocity's

My old 20" shot 175's with IMR4064 @ 2555fps avg
My current 21" shoots 175's with IMR4064 at 2565fps avg

The loads are not identical, the 20" has about 0.4gr more powder in it to hit an accuracy node so it's not a direct comparison on "what velocity change will I get?"

But, I've seen a lot of data to suggest that a 20" 308 with a 175 will be in the mid 2500's without going to a tightbore or special powders.

Hope that helps.

Re: searching for 308, 20" Bolt gun velocity's

My custom Brux is 17.5" and runs around 2550fps with a 178 bthp over Varget. That's not a hot Varget load either, it's moderate though.

I figure with a custom 20" you should be around 2600-2630fps depending on how fast your barrel is. Bartlien,Rock Creek, and Brux all seem to be fast barrels. Kriegers are faster too.

Re: searching for 308, 20" Bolt gun velocity's

Im all over 2550 to 2600 with a 20" Bart running the 175SMK and RL15 or 8208XBR in Lapua brass with not a hint of pressure. I can get up to 2650 but they are a little warm.

Re: searching for 308, 20" Bolt gun velocity's

lol You are gonna have to just chrono it for your new load and new barrel for exact results, for instance, my 20'' sps tactical with 42gr reloader 15 and 175gr smks only chrono's at 2389...

Re: searching for 308, 20" Bolt gun velocity's

I get 2,550 FPS out of my SPS Tactical with 44.3 grains of Varget and a SMK 175.

I went for accuracy, not maximum FPS...

Re: searching for 308, 20" Bolt gun velocity's

Remmy 700 SPS Tac 20" original barrel.

average 2650.

ALT 156
Temp 70 + -

175 SMK
43.5gr XBR 8208
Win case trimmed 2.006
CCI BR-2 primer
COAL 2.800

I have no pressure signs what so ever. Also getting .5 MOA pretty consistent.

Re: searching for 308, 20" Bolt gun velocity's

Ive yet to chrono my new load with 44gr of r15 but I am hoping its a little better than the previous...

Re: searching for 308, 20" Bolt gun velocity's

I have a 22inch on the bolt and with 43.0g varget and 175s the chrono puts me just about 2600.

Re: searching for 308, 20" Bolt gun velocity's

2850 fps with 155 hybrids, 46.5 8208, 25 thou. jump, Lapua brass
2700 with 175 Match Kings, 45.4 Varget, 5 thou. jam, Win brass

Re: searching for 308, 20" Bolt gun velocity's

bward,

can you provide the load data for the velocities you posted?

thanks.

Re: searching for 308, 20" Bolt gun velocity's

I'm getting 2550 with 18" factory savage HB and 43.5g varget under 175 SMK and Win brass. OAL is 2.800. Temp has been around 90-95 and at about 2500 feet elevation. Accuracy is good - averaging 3/4" at 100 yds.

Re: searching for 308, 20" Bolt gun velocity's

Remington SPS Tac 20" barrel.

Factory:
Federal GMM 168 gr: 2629 fps

Black Hills 168 gr: 2635 fps

Reload (Winchester Brass with 175 gr SMKs and 44.8 gr of Varget): 2630 fps

I have another load with 44.2 grains of Varget but not chrono'd yet.

Re: searching for 308, 20" Bolt gun velocity's

Have you checked the Reloading Depot in the top of the SnipersHide reloading area? Tons of info there.

I've given up on the forum's search function in favor of a snipershide google search. Go to google, type in site:snipershide.com 20" .308 velocity obviously you can change your search terms to whatever you want (perhaps 20" vs 26" barrels or whatever size yours is). Its like magic...

Remington 700 .308 LTR 1:12 20"

44.7 Varget
178 A-Max
~.03 off the lands
FGMM once fired brass
2578 +/- 7fps
It was only a three shot average but hopefully gives you an idea. I have no pressure signs and likely can go higher in the charge.
