Going to load my first batch of .44 tonight. I have some 2400 powder and 300 grain XTPs. Any suggestions? I think I will load a little under Horandys starting point and work up.

i shoot 20 grains under a 250 gr keith bullet and its a handful. ive found that about 7.5 grains of unique makes a pleasurable load to play with then i only hunt with the big ones

I really couldnt get what I wanted with 2400 & 300g xtp's or 310g oregon trail lswcgc. I was directed by some other members to switch to H110/W296 and havent regretted it. I do still use 2400 for the 240g and recently purchased some power pro 300-MP but have yet to try it

A 44 mag. ain't that bad. Good grips make a LOT of difference. Ruger Redhawk wood grips are poorly designed; if that's what you're using, get some Hogue Monogrips and I think you'll be happy.
I don't get all wrapped up in how fast my bullets are going but rather pick a load that gives acceptable 50 yard accuracy. H110/Win. 296, 2400, Blue Dot and others work well.

Nope they are right, I'm a p*ssy. Idealy, I'd like something that mimics that blazer 240gr stuff. I loaded a total of ten rounds last night before thinking, damn thats gonna hurt.

That's got to be fun!
I started reloading for a Superblackhawh in the 70's. Someone wanted to shoot it, I'd start them out on some light loads, 240 Keiths pushed by 5gr Bullseye.
About the 3rd time I loaded it, I'd drop in one of the 240gr full-powered loads, H110 or 296 powder.
The expression on their face when the fireball came out the end, priceless!

Unless you are worried about being attacked by Elephants or Cape Buffalo maybe a 240gr or 180gr bullet would be better in that short barreled gun? Will be a lot less punishing and you'll probably find it more accurate unless you are a VERY experienced big bore hand gun shooter.
The 300gr loads will get your attention but really have no use unless you are a hunter. You might try IMR4227 since the snap seems to be a bit less in the recoil than some other powders when working on full power loads. Just my opinion but good luck with the new gun and bullets.

I run a 44 Super Redhawk 9.5" barrel with 300 XTP's with a middle of the road charge of H110 and 240 Lead RN over 12gr of Unique. The Unique is DIRTY but since I bought 8lb of it not knowing that the stuff is basically flammable mulch I'm going to deal with it and just shoot it.
I have some 800X and 2400 as well but the H110 load shoots very well under the jacketed bullets of all weights and it burns cleanly enough that I quit experimenting.
With H110 a general piece of advice:
DO NOT GO BELOW MINIMUM LISTED LOADS. It has a narrow "safe band" and I try to keep off the extremes listed.

I have shot some 2400 in HOT 357 magnum loads. Out of my 4" barrel, the flamethrower comment is spot on. I am no stranger to the fireball, but with this combo, it is a little disconcerting....

Those rounds are not guna be a fun time. just because its a magnum doesnt mean its gota be a magnum all the time. Try trail boss for fun loads or unique.

I wouldnt use 2400, its great for 240XTPs, use 296/H110 for the heavies. I think if you use the lower cannelure the max is right around 24grs 296/H110. I load 22grs 296 with a 330 Hardcast for about 1400fps.

I did 5 rounds at 14.0 ( thats .8 under minimum starting load for Horandy) and 45 at 14.8. Any reason I shouldn't fire the 14.0 rounds?

Just shoot it, make sure you put a heavy crimp on it to burn all that powder. I was shooting 280gr over 18gn 2400. They hit hard but managable

Just shoot it, make sure you put a heavy crimp on it to burn all that powder. I was shooting 280gr over 18gn 2400. They hit hard but managable

No reason not to shoot the 14.0. 2400 is quite forgiving. H110 and 296 are heavily coated with deterrent and shouldn't be loaded too low. You will find in cold weather you really need the magnum primers for reliable ignition with the slow burners. 2400 as currently manufactured is faster than the 2400 Keith used. His max loads are a bit over pressure for the new 2400 and you still won't get the speed that you want with those heavy bullets unless you use the 110/296 clones. JMHO
