Open discussion for those of us who have seen the movie, please no bitching just discussion like you would with friends over a brew.

Give each point a number and reference that number whenever you answer or comment

1. The captain said this isn't there home, its a military base, Why would the engineers leave a map to there military base, why not there home planet??

2. The 'vases' hold a glass like container with 4 parts, which hold a liquid which is the bio-weapon, what is up with the top of them oozing and bubbling like that? I was waiting for an alien to pop out the top of one as soon as I saw them.

3. When the two guys left (and got lost) after everyone left they were attacked, what were they, like the start of the alien species. When they mixed with the alien bio-weapon did they evolve, then when mixed with other DNA evolve into something else.

4. When Shaw goes into the medpod to have the alien baby cut out of her, I didn't know she was having calamari that night, what is up with the squid. Then it grown into a pissed off starfish.

Re: Prometheus discussion SPOLIER

Dude, there were many WTF moments.....where was the guy who killed himself at at the beginning? Earth? Or that alien planet?

Re: Prometheus discussion SPOLIER

I took it as the alien guy that killed himself was on earth.

I thought that is how they started human life or something on earth, but I was just trying to connect the dots. The movie could have used another 30-45 minutes to explain and develop some stuff better.

They insinuate that was the moment when LIFE was created on earth.

I took that as earth and our creator... the reason so much of DNA here shares a common bond.

My thought was, once their offspring (us) were space capable, we would come and find them at this base, and then part 2 was to add the next stage by sending these new weapons and changing us further.

Think of us as a genetic garden, it’s now harvest time and the new seeds, us, will be cross pollinated with the “weapon” to create a hybrid.

That would explain #3 and 4 a little better.

Re: Prometheus discussion SPOLIER

We had a team that did that opening sequence with the guy at the waterfall and the subsequent DNA evolution. Originally it was a much longer sequence that showed the evolution of simple organisms into more complex ones starting with the engineer seeding the water. There was supposed to be an eel-like thing that evolves into a fish, then an amphibian, etc. But early on they compacted the sequence, probably because as originally planned it would have been far more time consuming and costly. So the explanation evolved as well.

There was a lot more to the battle on the loading dock with the alien-ized Holloway that'll probably end up on the DVD as the work was completed but ultimately was cut because it was "too gross." I thought it was to make the PG-13 rating, but apparently it's R in the States, so that's not the reason. Regardless, it's pretty badass and watching the theatrical cut you can tell it was compressed.

Another team handled the medical pod sequence and the last bit with the resulting full-size squid attacking the engineer and later the proto-alien birthing. I've got no insight on those bits though.

Fox has a "semi unspoken" 2 hourish max time limit for summer blockbusters. I honestly think the movie will be radically different and at least a hour longer if they release the directors cut.

And thanks for the explanation on the opening scene....it would have explained things a lot better had they just done that.

Re: Prometheus discussion SPOLIER

I think part of the design of the bio weapons is for the host being to mix, combine, and mutate with the alien creature. Each alien seemed to be somewhat unique depending on it's own genetic makeup combined with whomever was unlucky enough to get in its way. Case in point, the human-like xenomorph that came from the Engineer and the 4 tentacled squid with no face. Or perhaps there was just a large variety of different bio weapon creations that the Engineers designed for multi-purpose use. Instead of manufacturing one single bio weapon, make dozens and drop all the canisters on a world, letting the mass of different aliens overcome the native species.

What I think makes this last concept kick-ass is that if there are indeed multiple strains of xenomorph DNA, the Engineers must have also created an antidote to wipe them out should the Engineers wish to control one of those worlds. This could lead to some awesome follow-up movies, especially with Shaw trying to get the weapon to destroy the xenomorphs...

Re: Prometheus discussion SPOLIER

To me the Alien from the engineer was a bit "dinosaur-ish" so I think they might have been working to show the progression of evolution of a life form.

The biggest un-answered for me were the engineers themselves, the dead piled up, the un-launched crafts with the canisters, along with those in the sleep chambers.

Even in the awful Alien 3, they had the Xenomorph that was Dog like when it grabbed the Rottweiler, they had the 4 legged ones on that planet. So there is a bit of history of the morphing of the alien based on the host the face hugger impregnated .

The mural of the alien on the wall makes it weird for me on the justification part

/Start Rant

When i saw this on Saturday i was eeing all of the alien prequal hints and thinking how great it was, after coming home i did broke out google and found a interview with one of the writers and turned the the movie on its head for me.

1: i didnt realise the genisis of life part at the start (based on roman? beliefs the writer said)

2: There was a comment in the interview about how the carbon dating of the engineer was 2000 years old, and how it hinted that the engineeres were targeting earth '2000' years ago

3: the whole large v's small face hugger thing

4: the gestation time of the face hugger was quite short

5: im not sure if the size differance in the face hugger was a Stuff You to who ever owned the rites to the 'Alien Saga' now and to avoid being sued or if it was somthing that will be explained.

6: did any body else notice when alien was geing sergicaly removed the pod was desigend only for a 'Male" not female when the pod was on the ship for a female?

&: the big one to me was the canisters and the vials inside, first i thought they were canister rounds for the Space Jocky but the delicate vials inside say another story, as it seams to be the same liduid that was drank at the start of the movie and as we know was fed the the guy by the android. both times it was disolving the host to modify there DND and spred it and it appears that the when the chick got pregant it was a accidental bi-product of the liquid creating a huge face hugger

7: in saying #6 it dose not explain the burst chests in the engineeres and the lack of dead aliens (none were found).

8: to me either it is a fantastic story and very indepth or it is full of loop holes and only time will tell.

9: time to lay off the coffee / end rant :p

edit, i read the avove link, makes alot more sense

Despite my astonishment at the time and thought put into the hypothesis of the link above, it seems like a pretty solid explanation. It's a good link and worth the 15 minute read.

I'll read the above link when i get home, it's blocked at work. I also, think in the sequel Shaw is going to find them, and if they don't answer he questions the way she want's she's going to unleash unholy hell on their home world. These are just my thoughts after having viewed the movie, and the conclusions i came up with on my own.

So you need a 1669 word explanation in order to to make sense of the movie you've just spent two hours watching? I doubt there were that many words in the goddam script.

Re: Prometheus discussion SPOLIER

I just hope there's a sequel. I saw it yesterday and need time to mull it over...probably seeing it again would help. I liked it overall, but had some WTF moments because of the script. How did the Cap'n all of a sudden figure it out? (That it was a bio-weapons base and not their planet?)

Really? I loved the movie. I thought Ridley Scott nailed it. Well, we're all entitled to our opinions.

Re: Prometheus discussion SPOLIER

I want to see the directors cut to better feel out everything.

So the black gooo isn't neccesarily a weapon, but some kind of 'amplifier'? If you are pure, you live forever (or your genes do) and if you aren't, you turn into a monster?

There is the thought in science that we are not actually the true 'it', rather our genes are and these bodies are just adaptations that benefit the spread of teh genes.

Simply put yes, there isn't enough time to analyze all that information and try to answer this and that while watching the movie. If everything clicked for you like that user's explanation, and you got that from the plot your an exceptional person. Also watching a movie doesn't necessarily mean your focusing on specific details. I never saw the pictures on the ceiling or related all that back to prometheus. Sure the movie can be explained in much simpler terms but it leaves a lot of questions.

Someone asked me about my last statement, which I just remembered from some class or article I had read. As I actually looked for the source of it, the more appropriate the idea- especialy in light of the engineers 'deconstruction' at the begining of the film.

I found this:

We are machines built by DNA whose purpose is to make more copies of the same DNA. ... This is exactly what we are for. We are machines for propagating DNA, and the propagation of DNA is a self-sustaining process. It is every living object's sole reason for living.

— Richard Dawkins

Royal Institution Christmas Lecture, 'The Ultraviolet Garden', (No. 4, 1991). Quoted in Vinoth Ramachandra, Subverting Global Myths: Theology and the Public Issues Shaping our World (2008), 187.

I found that at:
http://todayinsci.com/QuotationsCategories/D_Cat/DNA-Quotations.htm

This Dawkins guy is all over when I google "We are machines for propagating DNA". It seems that it part of a larger discussion of God and the prescence of evil- as is in why does God allow pain and suffering. I think the existance of God and the presence of evil are common themes in Promethius.

Just thought of another parallelism from the movie. The engineer standing and sacrificing himself at the begining and the Captain (Idris whathisname) standing at the helm and sacrificing himself to bring down the engineers ship. The captain is also flanked on either side by two guys, just like Jesus was when he was cruxified. Jesus as ET helps ties in the shroud of Turin also.

In general I still don't understand:
The first hologram movie has them running into the chamber that has all the vases in it? Granted they are running from something- but why would you run to that room?
Why on the space ship are there sentries standing at the door, seemingly dying standing there and the other engineers in statis? Why didn't they take off way back when?

In the movie, the time of death on the alien world was ~2000 years, I don’t remember it having anything to do with earth... but something over looked by the writers, carbon dating would only work on earth. On a foreign world OUR carbon dating would need to be calibrated to that environment, earth’s model/history would not be accurate.

There you go thinking again. Can't I just enjoy some sci-fi movie and not think about all of the mistakes and loopholes. Didn't Austin Powers teach you anything????

Re: Prometheus discussion SPOLIER

yeah i don't know about all this discussion about a SCI-FI movie were the whole thing is made up but i did enjoy the movie because I was not at work for the couple hours it took to watch it.
it was very cool.

Re: Prometheus discussion SPOLIER

Saw it last night, made eating breakfast this morning interesting.
(Eggs and oatmeal) I thought the movie was rather slow and wide, but presented a decent base on whats to come. One thing is for sure, Noomi Rapace is one tough bitch in this movie that just keeps going!! And David is just plain Evil....Can't wait to see the rest.

Oh my. Just got finished reading that. Have not seen the movie but having read all of the Prometheus thread I can not see how all that can fit in the movie. Is that discussion "the movie" or is it a discussion of the book or the vision of the movie? Seems very deep and not anything that most people would get a handle on. I am now interested in seeing the movie but I am afraid that after reading all that it will be a let down.

I have gone to maybe 3 movies in 10 years. Just not a big go to the movies kinda' guy. most of the time it is video's with the family. I have a curse of being able to predict the end of most movies. I will tell my wife and kids who the killer is about 10 minutes in and they will be "No way it can't be him or her" and I am right. To much template movies out there nothing that is REALLY interesting... other than maybe Taken. I really liked that one. Or The Professional.

Haven't seen the movie yet, but I think reading all this I will be able to appreciate the movie for what it is.
The first impression that it was an Alien prequel is out the window and it's not a regular Hollywood movie. The director 's cut will be a must.

Re: Prometheus discussion SPOLIER

How do you know your writer is a complete idiot?

Well....

Have a film about a team of researchers that take decades to come to the decision that a $1 trillion 4 year campaign to reach a distant planet should take place. Arrive at the planet, have everyone you know get killed, including your loved one, and when you finally meet the Alien that is the whole reason for coming....

Have that Alien rip the head of the team member that asks the most important question of the film....and then have a fist fight ala Batman......and then have everyone run around.......and for the end? Have a giant spaceship start rolling for four minutes and have the characters run....thats right....not to the sides....in the path.....

Hopeless mess of crap. Makes a Will Farrell movie look deep and penetrating.

Re: Prometheus discussion SPOLIER

Saw the movie, I doubt the director's cut will improve much and I can't imagine what a sequel could bring to the story.

Really nice to watch, but very thin script.

Re: Prometheus discussion SPOLIER

The article is a bit miss directed when the movie is a "science fiction" not an archaeologist biography or reenactment. It's about alien, to critique the movie in that degree would leave most science fictions looking rather stupid. Noone is going to see a realistic archaeological discovery movie, they're going to get answers about the space jockey, etc.

Re: Prometheus discussion SPOLIER

Took the wife to see it, "it was ok" she says. Cant say I picked up on anything the second time through though.

Re: Prometheus discussion SPOLIER

The special effects were great...

Some things that annoyed me and pretty much ruined the movie:

When the girl (Shaw?) is pregnant. At first she is trying to escape. She is running down the hallway and falling a lot due to cramps. She then has the thing cut out of her and the hole stapled shut in seconds. Suddenly she is fine? Cramps were knocking her down, but a gaping hole from which her alien fetus was torn out and is now stapled shut is a walk in the park?! Sure she took some pills and few hits of the SciFi med pen... but really? The movie people could have made that seem a bit better. Something similar to the healing pod in Starship Troopers where the flesh and everything is seen being mended by lasers. That would have made the whole abortion scene 'believable.'

Also, at the same time in the movie, I thought I fell asleep or something. Once the girl wakes up and attacks the scientists to escape and kill the baby everything goes wacko. Movie was well paced until then, but suddenly: She's getting an abortion, no one cares she's had an abortion, the old man appears, the blonde chick is nowhere to be found, and two zombie scientists are attacking the ship superhero style! WTF?

As for the meaning of the movie? I'm going to read the link above. I thought the storyline was pretty bad. It felt like an old 80's horror movie parading as an Asimov tale. Leave the guns behind? 'Don't touch anything' but they've already trampled over everything and pushed their way in without actually looking at anything? I mean set up a perimeter first? Some lights? Maybe observe for a while? One step at a time?

80's horror movie formula: Dumb people go to obviously dangerous place and make dumb choices and die.

Sorry to trash your thread. As I said, I'll read the link and hopefully gain some respect for the film.

Re: Prometheus discussion SPOLIER

They have to make a sequel if they are going to tie the this together with the Alien movies. For those that remember in the original alien and alien 2 the planet where the creatures are discovered is LB426 not 223. Also in the original movie, when they first enter the alien ship, you see the "engineer" sitting at the control station with its chest burst open. Is this the ship Shaw and David escape in?

Re: Prometheus discussion SPOLIER

Also, I remember the engineer from the first movie being about twice the size depicted in Prometheus.

So we agree

The article linked above offers a fair analysis of the movie. While watching it I recognized there were some definite points being made. Overall, I still feel the better parts of the movie were over shadowed by weak writing (ie: horror movie plot structures) and some rushed scenes.

Re: Prometheus discussion SPOLIER

I thought the movie was great. I see many sci-fi horror movies and get disappointed when the horror show is the main point and the mythology is given the short end of the stick. This movie was just the opposite.

BTW - the triple-barreled flashlight in the movie is a Fenix TK45. I have one and it kicks ass! It's a handheld flashlight that, in its brightest mode, can make my car's headlights look dim.

Agreed. Even more so if you replace disjointed with craptastical.
