Hey, new to the forum, whats up everyone? Quick question, I'm looking at getting a Nikon Tactical 2.5-10X44 for a 308 custom built rifle. Does anyone here have anything good to say about one of these? Any thoughts would be great.

Re: Nikon Tactical 2.5-10X44mm

Let me revise this question just a tad. I want to shoot out to 800-1000yds on occasion, 500-750yds the majority of the time. So I guess a better question would be "when I'm in the mood for a 1000yd shot, will this scope accommodate me"?

Re: Nikon Tactical 2.5-10X44mm

If you're looking for a sub 1k optic there are a ton. Bushnell 3-12 FFP, Weaver 3-15 FFP, Vortex PST, Sightron S3. Just google for those and look at them.

I would also think about a fixed 10X scope like the Super Sniper HD.

Re: Nikon Tactical 2.5-10X44mm

BCP's advice is very good. All the scopes he listed are worth checking into. The Nikon Tacticals, new models, are solid scopes but way over priced.

The old models with the Gen2 mil-dot are solid scopes as well.

Advice on the power range...
If you plan on shooting steel, then 12-16x is plenty. But, if you want to shoot paper, you may want to step up to 20x

Re: Nikon Tactical 2.5-10X44mm

recondo84 the scope has 85 total moa of adjustment a 308 at 800 yds will drop 190 inches give or take a couple of inches depending and bullet weight coefficient, barrel length and.........

Re: Nikon Tactical 2.5-10X44mm

Have two, both tactical's (pre X), I consider them superior to Mk4's, better image, better turrets (compared to luepolds M1 dials) and a better PA, I dont know about the new X's but the tubes on the tacticals are much more robust than varible Mk4's as well.

They are an undervalued scope in my opinion. But they are old school, meaning moa turrets and mildot reticle, if that doesn't bother you... rock on.

If you are running to 1000y get yourself a 30 moa base and you will be very near 1.5 turns to the bottom of the turret adjustment, think zero stop of sorts. Write that number down and tape it to one of the rings. Now you won’t get lost in the dial.

You don’t need that much MOA built in to the base to reach 1000y, a flat will almost make it but a 15 or 20 would be best if you don’t like my method above. Of course this all depends on the bullet/load you use and the environmental data where you shoot. In my 308's I need about 38-42 MOA and while listed as 85, my scopes have a little more movement than that.

Re: Nikon Tactical 2.5-10X44mm

I also had one of these, pre X, on an AR10 for about 1200 rounds. Clearer glass than a Leupold MK4, great controls. I was really pleased with the scope. It was well built, tracked well, and all in all was a great scope. Moa/moa, and had a traditional mil dot...nothing wrong with that. If you can find one for a good price.

Re: Nikon Tactical 2.5-10X44mm

I have two Pre-X 4-16x50 Nikon tactical scopes. They are the "Rodney Dangerfield" of tactical scopes. For some reason they don't get much respect. They are outstanding scopes. Better that Leupolds in my opinion. The good part about them getting no respect is they can be purchased used at bargain prices. I think there is an illuminated reticle one for sale right now on this site. The early ones had Gen 2 type reticles. Find a used one and you will be pleased. The 4-16x50 have less internal travel, but with a canted base I can shoot my 308 to 1000 yard without a problem.

Re: Nikon Tactical 2.5-10X44mm

I still have pre-monarch x 2.5-10 nikon tactical. Frankly, of the moa-turret scopes out there, this is probably my favorite. I had mine in a 20 MOA base, and got to 1000 no problem. I like these better than the Leupold or IOR of similar mag range. Very sturdy, well built scopes, dead relaible, and optics are great.

Re: Nikon Tactical 2.5-10X44mm

Rangerwalker71 can verify I had a 2.5-10X44 monarch x on a 18" FNH PBR shooting 18" x 30" steel @ 963 yds was a breeze!! Loved that little optic it was built like a tank glass was very clear my only complaint was it took 84 clicks to get to that range... But well worth the money

Re: Nikon Tactical 2.5-10X44mm

I have two and think they are a awesome scope. I actual have one for sale right now because I am just not using it. But love the other on my 308. I shoot quite a bit with it at 1000 yards and it works great.

They are very reliable, track dead on, have a great image, and super stout 30 mm tube!!! NICE SCOPE
