I have a lcr in 357 I'm trying to find some practice loads for, currently carrying some 145 gr silvertips that my grandfather actually carried when he was a police officer, but I only have about half a box of them and dont want to use them all up practicing. Anyone have any recommendations for what powder to use to try to find a load fairly close (recoil and poi) to the silvertips?

I have some hp-38 (win231) that I use in my 38s and 158 lead bullets on hand, but willing to get other powders to try as needed. I really need to pick up some 2400 anyway for my dads 44. Oh and I also have a box of 158 gr xtps I picked up a while back.

Re: Short barrel 357 loads

Full power, the 2400 works...but a lot of flash. A low flash powder with good ballistics is International Clays.

Ok thanks, will try to pick up some clays and see what it will do

Re: Short barrel 357 loads

I used to use Unique for my old .357 6 inch.

It was clean enough at the time, and I didn't have too much flash or smoke.

Re: Short barrel 357 loads

Attention...don't do what I did...International Clays isn't Clays. Clays is Bullseye and 231 burning rate. International is close to Unique. I have a big can of Clays..I had to buy separately the International. Big difference. Repeat...BIG DIFFERENCE. Guess I cannot get more attention than that. Good shooting and read the labels. JMHO
