Hey guys, i recently bought a 700 SPS-V to build up as a project rifle. I bought it on Memorial day and have yet to shoot the thing. I installed a new stock, sent the bolt out to have a bolt knob installed, installed the scope and mount all that good stuff but have NOT been able to shoot it. Well here's my issue now. I finally got my bolt back today and figured "hey awesome, lets load her up and see what she does!"

Welp, i pop in a round go to chamber it and the bolt handle will NOT go down without some force. There's a loud "CLICK" as the bolt comes down, then when i eject the round i notice a nasty score mark on the edge of the rim. What could be causing this? I can't return the gun to where i bought it and it's no longer under warranty in its "altered" state so i'm pretty much stuck fixing the issue. Any ideas? Here are some pics of what i'm looking at:

What do you guys think? New extractor?

It's the nature of the beast. To reduce the carnage take a dremel tool with a cratex polishing tip and polish the inside(cutting) edge of the extractor. You can also polish the angled face and will reduce the amount of effort required to push the extractor to the side.

When they did the bolt knob install did they refinish the bolt? If so there is a good chance there is some blasting media wedged between the bolt body and extractor. Pull it out (probably better replace) and clean the area very well. You should be GTG.

Thanks for the advice David, I tried it and it got a bit better but I think I'm just gonna replace the extractor with a new one and see if that solves it. I compared it to my SPS-AAC extractor and they are a bit different, the SPS-v had a bit longer extractor and recessed less that the AAC did... Bad QC I guess.

Re: R700 Extractor too stiff? Gauging/Scraping Rim

I started having that problem with my 5-R Milspec. Removed the extractor from the bolt and cleaned all the schmutz that had built up behind it. Back to normal.

Just a note, get yourself a spare extractor. Someday in the future you will either remove it to clean out the space behind it and loose it, or it will wear out/break. I have my spare stored under a piece of Duck Tape (Gorilla Brand) on the inside surface of the front lense protector of my scope. Lots of extra room between the cap and lense so no danger of damaging the lense. Storing it there makes sure it's always with the rifle in case I break one.

Re: R700 Extractor too stiff? Gauging/Scraping Rim

Just an update, i ordered two new extractors from midway and installed one today, everything is good to go. It does still leave a little rub, but NOTHING as bad as before. It's just gonna take some breaking in to smooth out like my AAC's bolt did (~600 rounds through it) I will be keeping the spare in my range bag at all times, as well as the pick i use to remove it. Thanks for the help guys.
