Rifle Scopes Suggestions for a 800 meter scope under $1400

I am building a rifle to learn how to reach out to 800 meters. Never done shooting of this range before, furthest has been 300 yards with hunting rifles. So I have no idea what to look for in an optic for that range (magnification, reticle etc.). I want something that is compatible with long range tactical classes.

My only issue is that money is tight. I really cannot justify spending more than 1400. I really want to stay below 1000 but I would spend an extra 200-400 if there was an optic that is truly head and shoulder above the rest.

I am open to any advice.

Re: Suggestions for a 800 meter scope under $1400

Bushnell 3-12 with G2 reticule
Weaver 3-15 FFP with EMDR reticule
Vortex PST FFP 6-24 if you can find one (IMO best sub 1k dollar tactical/target scope there is)

edit: if you want second focal plane you can find used Nightforce 3-15 models for under 1400. Excellent scopes

Re: Suggestions for a 800 meter scope under $1400

+1 On the 6-24 PST. I have the second focal plane model. It is an excellent scope for the money.

Re: Suggestions for a 800 meter scope under $1400

Pick up a SS 5-20 in the for sale section. They usually go for between $1k-1250.

Re: Suggestions for a 800 meter scope under $1400

I would have to say vortex as well. I bought a 6-24 viper for a 22 rimfire I had. I have been shooting some matches with it from 25-200yds and it is unbelievably clear and tracks perfectly. I am about to start a build and have already decided, the PST is what I am going with.

Re: Suggestions for a 800 meter scope under $1400

I have two scopes for sale that fit the bill for you.

I have the new Bushnell Elite Tactical 3.5-21 with GDMR2 reticle $1150 and a Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20 TMR reticle $1200. Both are Front Focal and both are great scopes for long range

I don't even know what second focal plane means!

Any suggestions on reticle or is that a whole other topic better discussed separately?

Again, unfortunately I don't know the significance of front focal. Any suggested reading? How would you compare the two? I tend to trust Leupold, but am curious if Bushnell is similar in clarity and durability.

Re: Suggestions for a 800 meter scope under $1400

Front Focal Plane means the reticle will stay proportionate in size to the target as you increase or decrease magnification. This allows the distance between subtentions to be a ranging element at any power magnification. A second focal plane reticle can only be used to range when at full power or at half power cutting all measurements in half as well.

Get a HDMR or Vortex PST.

Not to break your balls, and your description is spot on, but he doesn't understand the diff between SFP and FFP and you think he's going to understand the verbiage you used in your post?

Second Focal Plane= your reticle doesn't change when you increase or decrease the magnification. Less expensive than FFP. Less precise than FFP.

First Focal Plane= your reticle gets bigger or smaller as you increase and decrease magnification. They're usually more expensive and heavier than their SFP brotheren. They're the more precise than SFP. Most (maybe all...dunno) military snipers use FFP scopes on their rigs.

Re: Suggestions for a 800 meter scope under $1400

800 meters punching paper..you would be most happy with the leupold tmr reticle or the reticle in the pst, they are the thinnest therefore most presise. I personally like the tmr reticle best..and love the open center. At 1000yds a 2" clay sighter bird fits nicely onto the open center allowing you to actually see the target vs covering it.$1200 is a good deal for the mk 4..they are 1600 new. FFP is the way to go as your wind holds and holdovers stay constant at all power levels. 1 mil is always 1 mil.

Whatever you decide..always match the turret with reticle..it makes life much easier. Mil/mil or moa/moa. Mils are generally coarser at .36 per click.

Btw..I have leupold mk4 m5 tmr..SS 5-20HD mil quad..weaver tactical emdr. Imo tmr is best suited for long range. I like the weaver a lot and feel it is truly the best value in ffp optics.. Don't have much time with the ss so far I love the. turret feel and 10 mil per revolution. Undecided on the reticle but seems to be. the thickest of the 3. Putting it on the ole 338 lm soon.

I have the most time behind the weaver as it sits atop my trusty 308/mcree chassis build. The weaver impresses me more each time I get behind it. Especially next to one of my vxiii optics.

Re: Suggestions for a 800 meter scope under $1400

sightron SIII 6-24 around 800 and you can use it to shoot way past 800 yds if your caliber allows.
never limit yourself.

Actually the initial explanation made plenty of sense, but I appreciate the further clarification.

I concur on the Bushnell. I have one and it's great for the money.

Re: Suggestions for a 800 meter scope under $1400

The G2 HDMR for me. It's on the way and replacing my Vortex PST FFP 4-16 on a 700P for comps.

Re: Suggestions for a 800 meter scope under $1400

Sightron SIII 6x24, Mil/Mil
Vortex PST 4x16 or 6x24, Mil/Mil
Bushy with the GDMR2
SWFA 5x20
NF 3.5 x 15, I prefer the MLR reticle

All of them will work and none will leave you disappointed as your skill set grows. If you're just getting started, I would recommend starting with a Mil/Mil scope. Most think it's easier to learn/use.

Re: Suggestions for a 800 meter scope under $1400

+1 for the Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50
all the features of a NF for $750

Re: Suggestions for a 800 meter scope under $1400

nightforce 12 x 42 benchrest, $1428 new
traded my 5.5 x 22 for it
22 power is a bit slim for 600 yard F-TR comp
the guys with 42 power had a slight edge.
Just received a March 8x80.
could not believe 80 power was usable on a humid day.

Re: Suggestions for a 800 meter scope under $1400

It was me, with a budget of $1400 for glass I'd go Bushnell because of front focal plane, horus reticle, 34mm tube, and variable magnification. I've had Sightron, Millet, Vortex and U.S. Optics, and my Bushnell is a whole lot closer to the USO than any of the others in that price range. If you were going to go to $2,000 then I'd consider the Vortex Razor, which is a pretty similar glass to the Bushnell, but it's also $500+ more. Bear in mind I'm talking about the GDMR2 and not some other model of Bushnell.

Re: Suggestions for a 800 meter scope under $1400

I have a SS 5-20x50 HD mil/mil it would be perfect for what you are looking for and I think the nonilluminated model goes for around 1200 new off their site.

Re: Suggestions for a 800 meter scope under $1400

Thanks all,

I didn't realize I had so many good options. Between those reccomended, it will probably come down to which I can get a great deal on, although I think I am looking for a bushnell 3.5-21 with a horus. I have been watching Magpul's "Art of the Precision Rifle" and that has kind of turned me onto the horus.

Its too bad there isn't a store that has all of these available to test!

Re: Suggestions for a 800 meter scope under $1400

I found the nightforce 8-32 benchrest to be an exceptional value, well under 1400 - call sportoptics + other hide sponsors for a great deal

be sure and use a 20 moa base

Re: Suggestions for a 800 meter scope under $1400

Check out the current deal on the SWFA SS 5-20x50 that several people have mentioned.
https://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=3255387&page=14
For $1600 you get it and a 1-6. if you don't need the 1-6 there are still some people looking to split the deal. If you take the same % off each scope that would put you at only $900 for the 5-20. This is the last day to order, though.
