Normally whenever I thread a barrel I've always just put a flat crown on it and then used whatever was threading onto it (suppressor, brake, thread protector) to provide some protection from dinging it. I was threading a buddy's 284 today and he wanted the crown recessed, and then he also wanted a thread protector until his suppressor shows up. So this is what I came up with. If anything it looks a little better in person than in the photo, which surprised me because I honestly was not optimistic when I agreed to try it. Anyone else have pics of crowns combined with a thread protector that they're particularly proud of? I'd like to get some ideas to offer for next time.

Yeah, I saw that when I took the photo, it's just a trick of the light. Looking at the lands using a jewler's magnifier they are pristine all the way up to the crown.

Alot of people get carried away with the crown. One problem I see in alot of crowns is they are after looks but they become a carbon catcher. Nice job!

Funny, I kinda thought this would be classified as the ultimate "getting carried away."

In your experience, what contributes or detracts from a crown being a "carbon catcher?"

Re: Recessed crown w/ thread protector

Whenever you shoot a rifle alot, the crown will get black. In the sharp corners, this carbon begins to build up. Making crowns too deep is the worst if not done correctly. I like my crown just deep enough (kiss) with cutter to slightly chamfer it. No buildup this way. Some will argue about this but it has worked for me for years this way. I guess I learned this from hanging around the benchrest crowds. The best crown is a burr free crown.

I think it looks fine. I wish I some pics to share with you, but I don't. What I can say is that I have been asked to do that same work before, and it has worked out just fine. Build up has a very easy solution, wipe it off.
