I am going to be purchasing a Win 70 post 64. I am getting it to build a nice custom hunting rig. I know I want CRF and have read a lot about the differences between CRF, CRPF and PF. I know that it is easy to tell the difference between CRF and PF because CRF has that big mauser claw extractor. My Question: Does CRPF also have the mauser claw extractor? Is it easy to tell the difference between CRF and CRPF by simply looking at pics?

Thanks

Phil

The CRPF does NOT have the big claw extractor. Very easy to spot the difference between a CRF vs PF or CRPF.

Good choice on CRF!

Thanks! That is exactly what I was looking for. I did a lot of reading and looked at some pics but none of the exanples were clear on whether the claw extractor was there. Now I know. I am happy!

Thanks

Phil

I've got two model 70 Pf actions one in a Target rifle one in a hunting rifle. Never had a feeding issue with either, but that is for standard target and big game hunting. I can't vouch for Pf when hanging upside down shooting zombies. All joking aside crf, Pf, or crpf, will all make a fine base for a hunting build. Good luck!

Very true. The PF models are fine rifles. I guess it's just the principal of it, though. To me, the CRF is what makes a Winnie, a Winnie.

Mod 70 CRF is the way to go for a hunting rig, my favorite action to build on. You can't beat the CRF, Claw Extractor, Cone Breech, 3-postion safety, and the simple trigger. If you haven't ordered a stock yet, I recommend the McMillan Pre-64 Monte Carlo, I've used many, very comfortable, shoulders well, sleek, and good looking. Good luck with the build!

RidgeRunner,

Make sure to post pics of your build when done. You staying with the factory barrel contour? I am considering stepping up to a varmint contour as it seems to be better for heat but still small enough for carrying while out hunting.

Re: Winchester Mdl 70 CRF vs. CRPF vs PF

I'm gonna use the factory barrel...its too good to waste...and yes, I'm keeping the sporter contour.

When it comes time to rebarrel this rifle it will be done in 280 AI, but still a sporter. I don't want to be lugging around a varmint contour in the elk woods...too much extra weight, and I don't expect to need more than 3 quick shots...5 at the most!

I'd prefer to never need more than 1 shot...but we all know how that goes.

I'm in pretty good shape but carrying a rifle that weighs more than 9 pounds will get old in a hurry...If I was building a true long range hunting rifle I would want a heavy barrel chambered in 338 EDGE and no less than 13 lbs...preferably 15 lbs...but thats not what I'm after, I just want a sporter type hunting rifle that is at least .5 MOA accurate for 3 rounds...an all around general purpose hunting rifle, easily carried, with enough horsepower and accuracy for 600 yard deer or 400 yard elk.
