As a non glock shooter/user I am going to take the plunge and get a G19.

I want a basic truck beater gun and this one seems to fit the bill. The only question I have is which generation glock to get. I have a friend who is selling a superb condition Gen2 and of course the newer G3's and G4's seem to be everywhere. Any thoughts on which is the better version? The G2 seems to shoot well and point well, but I have not handled nor shot the others - I live 100 miles from a range, so rentals as difficult to come by.

Re: Glock question

Finger groves and light rail is all if I'm not mistaken... I prefer a gen 3 but have since performed a grip reduction on my g19 and g34 and I don't run a light (go figure). If your buddy is setting you up with a good deal go for it... otherwise find a Gen 3 and be done with it.

Best of luck

Re: Glock question

been having a lot of problems with the Glock magazines in my dept. The problems were experiencing have to do with rounds not seating properly in the magazine resulting in not being able to top off the mag and failure to feed problems. We use the Glock 35. I tend to lean towards the XD for the metal mags instead plus the added beaver tail grip safety.

Re: Glock question

Gen 3. I have no experience with the Gen 4's.....yet. If you can find a gen3 RTF2 you won't regret it. Or send it off for a texture job. Glock mags are g2g as well. I've got one with a crack in the body on the back towards the top by the feed-lips and it works. It's a really old mag too.

First off, welcome to the dark side. You've got perfect rationale for getting a Glock. It probably won't be your last. The 19 is just about the perfect 9mm handgun.

Don't sweat what "generation" you get, unless you think one looks better than another, really want finger grooves or a light rail. For a beater gun, I'd just buy the first one you come across at the right price.

I just took the Glock Armorer's course and this is exactly what they told us. You have to take it with a grain of salt given who's talking, but they said one thing that I thought might help you.

They said if you have a Gen4 and you are the least bit concerned about it, call Glock HQ in GA and they'll go over it with you. They'll confirm the date it was made and what parts were used. That should give you piece of mind along with your own T&E.

Also, if there's a GSSF match near you, just take whatever you pick up and let one of their master armorer's go over it (for free) to be sure. You don't have to be a member. Just show up and if anything is wrong, needs to be replaced etc, they'll make it happen on the spot.

If you can't tell, I'm a recent convert too

Re: Glock question

If the Gen 2 is the right price and you shoot it well it sounds like a good option. You lose the ability to mount a light which to me is a big deal but maybe not for you. You can always modify the grip to roughen it up. There are a few options like adhesive pads/stickers and slip on grip covers. If you want the rail go for the Gen 3 or 4, you really can't go wrong either way.

Yeah, finally? Never should have put that stuff on the market. They would have caught 99% of the problems had they just tested the stuff before putting it on the market --that they didn't is obvious due to the problems people were having. I had a G20 frame, NIB, and it wouldn't hold a magazine, but if you shoved it in hard enough to seat, the whole damn assembly would fall out. I finally got them to fix it and they replaced the release with a standard one, but not before trying to stick me with the shipping, etc. That frame, at the time I sent it back, had not been fired. It was non-functional right out of the box.

BTW, I have six Glocks. I love 'em, I carry a G27 or 29 pretty much anywhere I go and feel very confident and comfortable with them, but just the fact they put those 4th gens. on there with that many problems just made me think twice about dealing with them in the future. The main reason I like 'em in the first place is that they are simple and reliable. Hell, I have to think about operating the safety on anything else anymore.

I have mostly 3rd gens., none have any problems at all. A 2nd Gen G17 (late 2nd gen.) from the 80's is probably one of my favorites. I just like how it feels without the grooves and it shoots great. It's worn out a bunch of smaller parts, but the pistol itself is holding up fine after tens of thousands of rounds.

You can't go wrong with a used Glock either, they are probably one of the better pistols to get used. Most folks don't shoot nowhere near enough to wear one out --my 2nd gen.? Police trade in, been factory refurbished, then I used it for a beater. I tried to wear it out and I couldn't do it. If you plan on using it for defense, you want to leave it as stock as possible too.

A used Glock would make a great truck beater pistol, and the G19 is quite popular.
