sorry, some of my pics are screwed up.... trying to get fixed, damn photobucket.... some pics are rotated wrong (cant fix for some reason),,, last few pics you might need to click on... i dont get it.

Well, I finally had some time to take my new LMT MWS .308 with 20" CL barrel to the local range. It is only 100yards, but will take the new rifle to another 600yard range @ another time (but it is further away from my house). Just wanted to test and zero in rifle being that it is new. Shooting with only the harris bipod off a bench with no back butstock rest. Scope is a vortex PST 4-16x50 FFP with moa/moa. Mount is a larue 10moa cant LT158. Bipod is a harris swivel style with notched legs 9-13" style. Before I shot the rifle I completely tore the rifle down and took the barrel off, cleaned it from head to toe, and put it all back together and re-torque'd the barrel @ 140 with the supplied wrench from LMT. The barrel came off and back on really easy. I put a little CLP oil around the end of the barrel before I re-installed just to make sure it didn't rust in or something for possible future removal. Had local gun shop bore sight the rifle. Took 5 shots to get zero. Set my zero stop on the vortex scope with the supplied vortex brass shims. Did no barrel break in. I just went to town. Once I got the rifle zero'd, I shot a full box of cheap american eagle 7.62x51 168grn OTM (first four 5group pictures), and then a full box of soft tip hornady 308win 165grn BTSP (last four 5group pictures) that I might use for deer hunting. I was amazed that the cheaper american eagle got the better groupings (see pictures). I figured it would be the other way around. I think I might try some 175grn next time. I'm sure the groupings would be amazing if you hand loaded your own ammo and used a rear back rest and vise. Absolutely no failures with loading or ejection. Only problem is a very very small dent in the side of the ejected casings form the brass deflector (i'm being a bit picky here now / see pictures). God forbid the brass deflector does it job, but might be a small issue for those that reload (the dent is crazy small and the brass on the deflector rubs right off with no nick on the deflector, see pictures.... might be able to put a small rubber pad on the deflector if you reload??? no clue).... I think it is safe to say the dual brass ejectors on the bolt really really really sling the casings out... Almost too hard. I think this is more geared around military use and full auto maybe? no clue. Usually find my casings in a nice little group about 10feet away @ about 3 oclock from my shooting position. Anyway, so far, I'm really impressed by the accuracy especially with no rear stock rest / vise and only using the harris bipod and bench. The rifle is what I would call "really tight mill fit and finish" in comparison to other AR .308's I've owned in the past. As for my past experience shooting new rifles, the groups tend to tighten up about the 300 to 400 round mark? Enough talk, here are your pics (dime for scale)!

That looked like a great time. I want to see your reports when you shoot longer distances with pics. I'm thinking of doing a 200 yard zero for my 16 inch MWS.

Re: LMT MWS 308, first shots @ range with pictures!

Very nice elfster...how much does the rifle weigh empty & as pictured?

Re: LMT MWS 308, first shots @ range with pictures!

    A couple of comments:

    1. I put a piece of sticky-back velcro on my deflector lump to keep from denting the brass. I also have a heavy buffer installed (Slash's, I think).

    2. I notice that you are consistently getting a flyer. Is this the first shot on every group, by any chance? Thanks and good shooting...

Re: LMT MWS 308, first shots @ range with pictures!

cant remember on the flyer.... i'll need to remember that next time. to be honest with you i think the rifle is more accurate than the person shooting it. I need to get it in a vise with a rear buttstock rest to really see how she shines. also, i think the barrel will get more accurate at about 300 rounds plus or atleast that is my past results. this is kinda crappy ammo also. maybe 175grn next time.

yeah, i just put the whole rifle on my bathroom scale (rifle, optics, mount, bipod, everything including magazine unloaded)... like i said i'm sure its not that accurate as it isn't even digital... if i had to guess maybe 11 to 12 pounds?? prob more on the 12lbs side??? no clue??? my non-digital scale showed 11.75... would really need to put it on a digital scale to know for sure... # i gave you could be under or over.

Re: LMT MWS 308, first shots @ range with pictures!

ill see if i can use my friend's digital scale and will let you know right on the nuts!

i know for a fact when the rifle was shipped to me NEW in box (double cardboard box, rifle, iron sights, mag, torque wrench, and all the other goodies that come in the box from the factory), it was right at 12lbs.... i'm guessing the scope and bipods would be about the same?? maybe a bit less? so I'm thinking 11.5 to 12 pounds? Anway, i'll get it on a digital scale and will let you know for sure.

Re: LMT MWS 308, first shots @ range with pictures!

I am silly impressed with the american eagle ammo. That looks like good cheap hog ammo that you don't have to load. I love the 165 hornady bullet for hunting, but always load my hunting rounds. I still haven't fired mine yet. Try 44gr of varget with cci br2 primer seated to 2.800. My bolt and gas gun gap shoots this load one holers. It's a fantastic hunting load. I hope the lmt does the same with it.

Re: LMT MWS 308, first shots @ range with pictures!

I have the same rifle (16" barrel) with same scope and a 20" 260 Remington barrel. I haven't had any time for working with this one yet. I will be on vacation July 4th week and hope to get some rounds down range then.
I immediately noticed the flyer too and thought the same thing. I'll be watching for that when I shoot mine.

Re: LMT MWS 308, first shots @ range with pictures!

Nice rifle and great shooting. I keep reading post after post of these crazy accuracy results with CL barrels. Gotta love LMT.

Re: LMT MWS 308, first shots @ range with pictures!

I have the same rifle with diff glass and atlas bipod, 14.5 lbs on diggi scale. I noticed most of the ammo I have tried that was marked .308 shoots like the hornady above, including the 168 FGMM. I tried the 175 FGMM and put the first 5 shots at 100 into 1 hole slightly bigger than a dime. When I spoke to LMT on the phone the gent there suggested sticking to ammo for 7.62, and so far it looks like that's the ticket for me.

I'm biased but that's a schweet set up you got there!

Mine likes 7.62 FGMM the best, I have tried a few others and 7.62 prints the best. Tried 150 grain Federal .308, forget it.

My best group so far is below

Re: LMT MWS 308, first shots @ range with pictures!

just got the burris fastfire3 in today. Not impressed with the battery cap one bit! They don't give enough friggen room to get the cap back on once you get the battery installed!! sheesshh, and I would consider myself more than mechanically inclined... no battery installed, the cap screws on and off no problem... then you install the battery and the guys @ burris didn't allow enough friggen room to screw the damn thing on!! my lord.... anyway, I got a RMA to send it back.... on to option#2 / research again. Uhhhhggg. Oh well. So much for the burris fastfire3 idea.

Re: LMT MWS 308, first shots @ range with pictures!

ok, so i got my friends digital scale (hopefully it's accurate) and the entire rifle including the optics, mount, pmag, bipod adapter, and harris bipod (no sling) was 13.87 pounds, so you might as well say 14pounds especially once you get the sling on it. im sure you could take well over 1 pound off if you deducted the harris bipod. hopefully this helps.

Re: LMT MWS 308, first shots @ range with pictures!

That still isn't much weight. A great padded sling will take most of the burden off your shoulders.

Re: LMT MWS 308, first shots @ range with pictures!

thanks! I'll will keep an eye on those flyers next time i shoot the LMT & where in the 5shots they are (first, last, or middle)... Even with the flyers I'm pretty darn happy with the first shots down range. I'm sure the accuracy will improve once I get some more bullets thru the barrel. Going to try some 175grn next time around. I will keep you all informed with pictures once I do the test! Maybe even @ 600yards if I can make it to that range.

Re: LMT MWS 308, first shots @ range with pictures!

I finally got a chance to launch some rounds thru my LMT MWS today. It shot the 168 FGMM marked 308 Win best. I had some 175 FGMM marked 7.62x51 and, to my surprise, it shot like shit.
Also, with even the best loads, I experienced a flyer on the first shot in each group. The 168 FGMM put four in just under .7" but the first shot opened the group up to 1.3".
Federal AE 308 150FMJ shot OK but Rem. UMC of same weight was horrible.
I am not a fan of Remington ammo and today just confirmed that.

Re: LMT MWS 308, first shots @ range with pictures!

hmmmm..... very interesting.... good information. keep the info coming. got any pics?

i just ordered 4 more boxes of the cheap american eagle OTM 7.62x51 (found a place that has them for $16.75 shipped price)... i'll take some pics of the groups when i shoot them up.

i also just got into reloading (got a hornady lnl ap press)... im in the middle of building the bench right now and i'm sure it will be about a month before i can start making my own 308 ammo... when i do get some ammo going i'll keep you all informed.

    thanks for the posting.
