Savage LRP .260 or 6.5 Creed Mag Length?

Re: Savage LRP .260 or 6.5 Creed Mag Length?

Can't help on mag length, but can tell you making brass go 308-->260 is pretty much not worth the effort.

260s neck is about .020" longer, and after necking down, the neck will be THICK, meaning you'll have to turn necks, too.

That's a lot if work to get brass that is mismarked, and *close* to being right.

I have the 12 LRP in the 6.5 Creedmoor. The inside measurement of the mag is 3.000". You will want to allow for some clearance on each side though.

Awesome! Thanks for that info, that's a good bit more room than I would have guessed. Are you just shooting factory ammo? If not what can of COAL can you get away with and cycle reliably?

Mark,

I reload and I use one of the 10 round mags that are modified by Zrat, as my main mag. I limit my load to the Max Coal allowed in those mags which is 2.850"

My lands are at 2.873, and the longest COAL I tried in the factory mag is 2.860. This worked fine. Obviously the factory mag has plenty of room for this.

Based on what I have seen when using the 10 round mag, you need to at least allow for .005" on each side. You may be able to have COAL as high as 2.990" on the factory mag.

I am guessing your lands are much lower than 2.990" however, and the you wont need to get anywhere near the 2.990"

I have a 260 LRP. I currently load to 2.846 coal with SMK 142 grain. I need to hit the reloading room after work to see what the measurement to the lands was. Edit... To the lands I measured 2.876

I shoot using the 10 round mags made by Darkeagle Customs that use the stock Savage bottom metal. I will have to measure them tonight to see what the mag length is. I will edit later with the info. EDIT ... I measured the mag opening and it was 2.993

FWIW I shot my 260 out to 1000 this past weekend and was really impressed with it. Considering it was my first time shooting at anything over 200 yards I was VERY happy. I managed some nice 1025 yard hits on an 18 inch torso target.

I have not put them through a chrono, but according to my Dope from this weekend and my droid shooter app I am at about 2660 fps. I am running 41.5 grains of H4350 which is the low end of the range but it shot the best in my load testing.

I own this rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor. I am new to the sport but these articles where very influential in my decision which was very similar to yours. I don't see there being much of a difference if you handload but Hornady has nicely priced match ammo if you don't.

I know this isn't to do with your original question but it's what I'm going through right now. I am very happy with the accuracy I'm getting from the 140 grain AMAX's but if you want to change the stock ever your paying alot more for the factory HS Precsion which I'm not real impressed with. I think the barrel is probably the most impressive factory unit you will find in this price range though.

Re: Savage LRP .260 or 6.5 Creed Mag Length?

Just ran some measurements and loaded a dummy round to test. The magazines are stamped steel and I'm sure there are variances in size during manufacture. The inside measurement on my LRP 260 mag is right at 3.000. I loaded a dummy round and left a little room for the slope of the front and rear metal. In my rifle, 2.940 OAL is safe. I hit the rifling about .070 before that. Hope this helps.

I have the 6.5 and get 2800+ with the Hornady suggested load of 41.5 gr H4350, at their book length. Lots of mag room, excellent accuracy.
