Hi Guys , I was just reading one od Senichs books on sniper rifles and he mentioned Rock Island Arsenel built M1-D's, how can you determine whether your M1-D was built at Rock Island Arsenel??

Not trying to ba an ass but...Maybe an "RIA" Cartouche on the stock? It's the only way I can think of. But I'm no expert on Garand Sniper Models...

So when you say: "Marked Toole" does that mean where the maker is marked on the rear of the receiver by the serial number? Because I've never heard of that and I'm pretty sure Rock Island Arsenal NEVER made Garands of any type. If you're talking about being made <span style="font-style: italic"><span style="font-weight: bold">"into"</span></span> an M1D by making the necessary changes to a regular Garand, I still think the only way would be a Cartouche... and obviously, only if the stock is original to the action.

He most likely means the receiver leg is marked T E and a date. In the late 50's and 60's the military rebuild facilities marked the receiver legs with a two letter code for the facility over a MM YY date code. Some times the code is placed in the quarters of a large plus or cross, some times not. The markings were dune with an electric ingraver so many are very light and hard to read. Toole had a lighter color grey park and did allot of the M1-D rebuilds during this period. Many people claim you can tell a Toole rebuild by the color of the parking even if you can not find a rebuild mark on the rifle.

Re: Id'ing a Rock Island Arsenel M1-D

From what i know about every US arsenal rebuilt standard M1s into the D model. No D models where made new from any of the arsenals they where all rebuilt into this configuration.
I think RIA never marked the receivers on the rifles they rebuilt. They only marked the stocks. The gentleman above is right on the Toole rebuilds they are a lighter grey park in cooler and are marked TE then month and year.I have one i got years back and its Marked TE6-69 .It looks brand new and all the Accessories are still sealed.
