Im about to start my first build, and my options for actions are either Stiller or Pierce and i haven't heard of Pierce before? i dont know much on stiller, are they any good? would they be the better route to go. I will be building a 300. win mag.

Re: Stiller Actions?

Stiller has a military contact for .300 WM rifles...So they must have done something right.

I'd get a Stiller action if I had the money. I support Texas companies ;D

Re: Stiller Actions?

Don't have either but a friend has the Pierce action. Shoots bugholes, very smooth. My factory 700 was overhauled by Pierce and it stacks rounds like a custom. Either are great but depending who builds your rifle you will probably have a shorter build wait time with Pierce. I doubt very much you'd see any difference with one over the other.

Re: Stiller Actions?

I have a .260 on a Stiller Predator and absolutely love it. Have no experience with the Pierce, but can recommend the Stiller without hesitation.

Re: Stiller Actions?

I've got a 6.5 Creedmoor on a Tac 30 action, even sent barrel to Stiller n gang to chamber and install on their action.

Great work, fast lead times and customer service...plus the best bang for the buck when it comes to actions!

Re: Stiller Actions?

Have a TAC338 that has worked lawlessly. Same goes for my first TAC30-AW and I have another TAC30-AW that I have coming from the Stiller Group Buy. My Stiller actions have proven to be rock solid.

Re: Stiller Actions?

One more for Stiller. While I have built on Surgeons, Defiance, and others, which are all very good, all of my personal rifles are built on Stillers or reworked Remingtons. I just like all the features they offer at a fair price. Plus the customer service I have gotten from Russ, Jerry, and Curtis is as if I were family. You should have no problems with any of the others either. Best of luck.

Re: Stiller Actions?

I built a 300 WSM on a Stiller Predator Action and it is an absolute hammer.

I have a 308 built on a Predator action and it is also a one hole gun. It helped me take home top 308 at the last Louisiana Tactical Precision Rifle Challange.

Yesterday my smith finished my 260 Remington, built on a Tac 30 A/W. I expect great things from it also.

Re: Stiller Actions?

i have a stiler predator. it shoots better than any rifle ive ever shot. the action is smooth as butter, i could not be happier. but i also dont have any experiance with other companies. i do know when i need another action stiler has gave me no reason to look at their competition

Re: Stiller Actions?

I've used several Stillers in the past. My coyote rifle, and my bench rest rifle are both on Stiller actions. Goodstuff to be sure.

Re: Stiller Actions?

280 AI built on a stiller tac 300. love the action. Mid next summer I will be able to share my thoughts on a surgeon vs stiller. Robert Gradous is building me another 280AI. The stillers are great actions and I think you would be very happy with about any of the top company actions. Surgeon, Stiller or Defiance

Re: Stiller Actions?

Thank you to everyone who replied! I am very confident in the gun smith and now I can't wait to get this build going!

Re: Stiller Actions?

Thank you for everyone for taking interest in my post. This is what it looks like ill be going with. A stiller Tac 30 action, chambered for a 300. win mag, a Broughton 26-28" #5 contour 1:10 twist barrel, McMillan A3 stock, 60% black, 20% OD, 20% light tan with a timney trigger all topped off with a Nightforce 5.5-22x50mm scope. The scope actually came in today!! whats everyone think?

Re: Stiller Actions?

I am sure you know but a 300 win mag will have to go in a Tac 300 unless you are going to do a short mag. Just make sure you order the right action. That sounds like a nice setup. The Nightforce scope is a good scope. Who is going to do the work for you?

Re: Stiller Actions?

I had Texas Brigade Armory build me a 260 on a Stiller Tac 30 action. It shoots like a custom benchrest rifle. The action is as slick as "wet ice". Was considering a couple of other actions but after visting with Jerry Stiller on the phone decided the Stiller was rhe only way to go.

Sorry i meant to say Stiller Tac 300 just forgot a zero. I am having a local boy do the work for me, his name is sean at North shore barrels. I have seen pictures and met a guy who has 2 guns build by sean and said they are fantastic firearms and his turn around time is incredible, 4-5 months.

Re: Stiller Actions?

I had this same choice, Stiller vs. Pierce. I chose stiller as I only heard great things about the stiller tactical line. I didn't get nearly the response on the Pierce action as the stiller - which was overwhelmingly positive.

Ordered a predator La mag bolt for my 300 win build Friday from Southern Precision Rifles after Stiller's shop told me S.P.R was getting a shipment in May!!! Southern Precision Rifles said it will ship Monday!! Both are very good businesses if you ask me!! 2 thumbs up for Stiller and Southern Precision Rifles!!!

stiller is great, i love mine, but it's really the guy that screws it to the action, etc.

Can you get Stiller Predators easily?

Bolt Shroud with 3 Position would be nice, use of a Jewell bench trigger would be cheaper and still have a safety!

Hey Matt,

I own both a Stiller and a Pierce short action. I have to say the Pierce is a noticeably smoother action, the Stiller doesn't really have that "custom" feel to it - however the small ejection port on the Pierce short action is a pain when ejecting loaded rounds. If you don't do it slowly, it doesn't throw the case, and the case hits hard up against the action (enough to damage the case). The Stiller doesn't have this problem with their enlarged ejection port. If you could get the Pierce ejection port milled out, it would be the easy winner in my opinion.

If I was to choose between the 2 for my next build, it would be another Pierce.

I have two Stiller Tac30's which Ive been very happy with. Stillers customer service is excellent as well.

congrats on your build!

I'm not certain, but I think if you're chambering it in 300 wm, you may need to order the TAC300. Anyway, I hope your build turns out the way you want it. There's no doubt you're dealing with some good folks at Stiller.

What is the final function or use of the rifle going to be. That's a big round for a #5 barrel unless it a hunting rig. Shoot a match with that rig it'll beat you up, but a carry rig to hunt not a big deal. I have two match guns that are short action stillers, one AW feed one standard feed. They are a tight tolerance action but nothing a little fine lapping compound doesn't smooth up!! Good choice of actions if you are asking me, but there really are a lot of good custom actions I haven't seen or played with.

Go the Shilen route Welcome to Shilen Rifles, Inc., Stiller builds these actions for Shilen and you can get what is essentially the Tac-300 with a floating bolt head and Savage thread pattern. With the Savage thread pattern you don't have to wait 4-5 months for a smith to install the barrel and with the changeable bolt head you can get replacement bolt heads at PT&G and shoot 30-06, 300WM or 300 Norma from the same action. The Shilen/Stiller actions have a Remington footprint so finding chassis or stocks is easy.

Why the barrel nut? Iv'e never seen one on a custom action.

Thumbs up for Stiller's customer service.. I bought an action with a .308 bolt for a build that never happened, they let me return it for an action with a mag bolt.

Cost me $20 for the swap.

THAT is customer service!

+1 on customer service. Have a Stiller that came from a distributor and arrived with a marred edge. Called Stiller to let them know and the sent a new one out that day. Also exchanged my short base for the extended base for $3 shipping. Not sure I would even bother messing with another action builder. Buy Stiller and get a quality product and support good business practices. We need more companies with good service and quality.

I have one stiller and agree with everyone's comments above. Just a great action. I have 2 kelbley Atlas actions now though. One on a f classer and one 300wm. These are excellent and reasonably priced actions as well. Looks like you are good to go though. These actions are without a doubt the smoothest actions I've handled. But my next could be something else....I'm equal opportunity. But most likely an atlas..

Stiller no finish; media blasted.

You should have spoken with John or Jim. When they made my action for my Norma Jim asked me if he could do a full 9" for the extra barrel threads and if I wanted the ejection port opened for a full length cartridge removal. He also gave me the option of a rem clone or BR rear tang. Truly a top shelf custom action, with that being said I also like my Stiller Diamondback.

I went with what the supplier here had in stock. Here in Aus, with the way our importers work, it can take an extra 3-6 months on top of however long it would take to manufacture the part just to get it into the country (this goes for stocks, barrels etc as well). Plus I didn't know the port was going to be a problem.

My smith has said he can mill out the port similar to the stiller actions for me if I wanted, which I might still have done. Still loving both my pierce and stiller as well, but ended up deciding to build a 308 shorty on a sako 85 action for my next one instead ;)

I have owned a few different actions over the last 2 decades, bought a tac 300 last year and just bought another one, great action for the price, it is all stiller for me from now on, dont need anything else.
cheers.

My new TAC 300 arrived yesterday. It is absolutely beautifully crafted. I ordered it at the end of March and got it 5 weeks later. Try that with some other popular action makers. The work is under way. Pictures to follow soon.

I just sent in my payment for a TAC 300 that will be sitting in a cadex with a benchmark barrel. Russ was EXCEPTIONAL to deal with. Very helpful, knowledgeable and I am very excited to have a stiller action. This is my first custom build and I feel like I made the right choice in regards to a quality action.
