You would think as popular as the 338 Lapua cartridge is that some custom action manufacture would have these in stock most of the time. I understand that waiting is common on pretty much anything custom but the Lapua is here to stay so why the long wait times on actions.

Re: 338 Lapua action availability

Did you check Surgeon? Their website indicates the 1581 XL with a 0.590" bolt face is in stock.

Re: 338 Lapua action availability

They make a very nice action, but I don`t care for the built in scope base. I like having the option of changing scope base (cant) if I need too.

Re: 338 Lapua action availability

Check third generation shooting supply. they had some Surgeon XL actions in stock last week. That is the best action made for the 338 Lapua.

When do you need to change it?

Re: 338 Lapua action availability

Surgeon has a built in 30moa integral base. That is not enough for what I use the 338 Lapua for. We have shot the 338 out to over 2600yds and it take more cant in the base for that kind of shooting.

Re: 338 Lapua action availability

Have you checked with Stiller? Or Bugholes on the Hide stocks their actions. He may have a TAC338 in stock.

Re: 338 Lapua action availability

Surgeon. If you need more cant, Spuhr mount with built in cant....can't be beat. The integral rail is more rigid too.

What this guy said. The XL is the best action out there for that caliber and you are excluding it because of one of it's best features? Throw a 5-25 S&B on top of that setup and you should be able to get to over 2600 yards without having to hold any elevation.

Re: 338 Lapua action availability

Bugholes is out of stock. Don`t want no Spuhr mount as that looks wierd. Stiller makes nice actions but wait time is crazy long. Don`t want no Surgeon.

I respect your opinion and all but have you actually held a Spuhr mount? Its a thing of beauty!!!!

Re: 338 Lapua action availability

Try badger M2008. I like mine. Marty should have some in stock.

Re: 338 Lapua action availability

Badger now has 45 MOA rails for the M2008. That should get you out to 2600 with about any scope.

Since looks are what matters when trying to shoot at 2000+ yards. I knew there must be some reason it's hard for me to make hits at long range, its my weird looking scope mount...

Re: 338 Lapua action availability

The Badger action has the same threads as the Remington, (1.0625OD) which by many gunsmiths have proven to be to small for such a large case head. Stiller, Savage, Surgeon, Barker, just to name a few that have bigger threads for the Lapua for a reason.

I know of a brand new Badger 338 Lapua action and blank (think its a Bartlein) that may very well be available from another hide member for a damn good deal, pm me if you are interested and want some contact info.

Nevermind, just reread your post and saw that you were not interested in a Badger action.

Re: 338 Lapua action availability

One thing you could do is use the Surgeon action, and then use a canted scope mount such as LaRue and stack them. Example would be a 20moa down rail on the Surgeon 1086 with a 10MOA down mount for 30 total, or do the 30moa XL action with a 20MOA down if you're really gonna be shooting it out there.

LaRue mounts hold their zero removing them off the rail and putting them back on so you'd have no issues.
